Would you want a Ryzen powered Laptop?

Lets face it.. in the professional environments the days of large workstations are quickly becoming a thing of the past as high value workers need flexibility where they can be productive. Regardless of working from home, at a company location not at home base, or elsewhere.

VDI's can help some but if you need real CPU time you need it where you are and with you.

Considering Laptops are not PRIMARILY gaming devices even in the enthusiast community... it is an understood that gaming is a secondary role for them. (Though we do want it to be pretty good at that.)

Would you consider a Ryzen CPU in a laptop.. and if so do you think it would be better to do an lower clock 1700 CPU that is full 8 core 16 thread?

Imagine an 8 core laptop.. with 16 threads for those coders who have to do work outside of the office. It would be a godsend. :)
 
I'd say the Raven Ridge based laptops would be most interesting personally.

A Ryzen one would be overkill for my uses.
 
Yes, but only if it was a Sager.
I would want a full desktop chip, none of this mobile shit under the hood.
 
The power envelope of the 6 and 8 core ryzen prohibit laptop use imho. And downclockingto save power will destroy ryzen single thread performance even further.
 
You gotta wait for Raven Ridge 4 core 8 thread and a Vega 11 multi chip package. Looks like one variant had HBM2 on chip package.
 
No, not this generation. Maybe a successive future gen, if AMD can successfully create a die-shrunk (7-10 nm) mobile 4c/8t to 8c/16t version that is no more than 20-35W max. Pair that with an adequate but power-sipping mobile Vega or Polaris (if planned) with a 1080p-1440p 120-144 Hz panel, and they'd have a killer mobile PC gaming platform, for sure.

I'd definitely consider shelling out my "'bout tree-fiddy" for one.

Everything I do on my desktop I also do on my laptop (just not quite as often). And right now I have an i7 3610QM in my laptop, and it feels slow as sh*t. I max that thing out all the time. MOAR CORES.

None of my laptops are worth a fuck for my daily needs, most I can do on them is use them for research and DLing drivers with about 30 tabs open, then put em' back to sleep.
Got a HP Pavilion with a P6100 and a Panny Toughbook with an i3 330m. That's slow as shit.
They were free, so it is what it is.

Mine is an Asus laptop I picked up a few years ago for pretty cheap. It's got a pretty substantial mostly-metal case, which is good, because it sees duty as my primary DJ laptop. I take it to the clubs all the time with my Traktor S4. Twice a week, sometimes more. It gets beat up in places filled with drinks, drunk people, smoke, whatever. Still trucking. So I give it points for durability.

Just wish the CPU was faster. That and I wish I could get the smell of smoke and booze out of it. It sucks going to one of my dev clients with the thing, and seeing the upturned eyebrows at how sh*tty the laptop looks (and smells).

So I should probably buy a nice one for client duty and let the Asus unit keep trucking in f*cking Thunderdome. That's the excuse anyway. So if AMD could drop at least a 6 core in a laptop system, that'd be nice.
 
Absolutely! As for the power envelope - the 1700 runs fairly cool at stock clocks, and I've only ever used the battery in a laptop to move from outlet-to-outlet without shutting down first anyway.
 
The first raven ridge is Ball grid array for embedded. Then there will be land grid array. Socket AM4 isn't until 2018.

Yes! Even if it was a single-module non-APU with 4C8T that'd be awesome. I love my APU, but I also know the crippling effect being paired with a GPU on the same die has on the CPU side's performance, even when it's not utilized. So I'd far rather see full-on CPU option available for the pure performance aspect.

However... I also know that isn't going to happen for the simple fact that not ever manufacturer is going to want to stuff in a dedicated GPU just to make the system work. As such, it WILL be down to Clevo (Sager is the rebrand) to shove one into a laptop for us :D I was really surprised to see them offering a desktop 7700K when I was helping a buddy research a new gaming laptop! So I'm really hoping they do something like that.

I think he means the first AM4 APU will be 2018.
 
The purpose of AM4 was for upgradability, hence the hdmi port. Of course you could use Bristol Ridge. Raven ridge APU will eventually come to the AM4 platform next year.

Ryzen actually does very well on power efficiency at lower clock speeds. Idle draw is super low, and efficiency at speeds under 3.3GHz is very good.

Of course, if paired with an AMD GPU, all that goes out the window. Those things are heaters. But if anyone has half a brain, there ought to be a Ryzen/nvidia laptop pairing eventually.

I'd be ok with Ryzen/nVidia. I need graphics power for various apps.
 
Sure but the battery life would be 20 minutes. ;)

Bah, batteries are only good from one outlet to the next, that's the price you pay for high performance in a portable work station or portable replacement gaming desktop.
Just like a supercharged V8, from one gas station to the next. :D

Raven Ridge aka Ryen APU, should be a magical leap in performance compared to their older APU's. The Steamroller and Excavator mobile chips were terrible mobile parts due to lack of power efficiency. It really wouldn't surprise me if AMD comes out swinging with the Ryzen APU in a laptop 35w tdp 4c/8t and 1024 some shader gpu (p11) with a base clock of 3ghz, and boost of 3.6 or so.

Intel has decent mobile parts, but they are much lower clocked than their desktop parts. Lets not forget only in mobile will you can still find a dual core I7 with HT. AMD is prime to bring back a-lot more competition to the mobile market.

And if you're running a lot of effects, it'll eat threads too. An 8 core laptop would be great... but it would still need good battery life. Booth power at the clubs is a dicey proposition. All kinds of grounding issues. Bad wiring. I don't like to run off the wall there if I don't have to.

With your usage case a 35w chip would be great for your DJing needs, I on the other hand wouldn't really care about the mobile aspect, but more about the performance benefits.
I would be running uTorrent, MKVMerge, Mediacoder, JMKvpropedit, Handbrake, Calibre, Tor w/ 30 plus tabs, Teamviewer, ect..ect. Cores & threads + RAM are needed, as well as good cooling. All this is a must on all my setups. And I just don't see any battery lasting long for my usage needs.

I would love a BYOB solution at work with a $ amount attached to your work Laptop purchase. Everyone would be jealous of my box when I was done and probably under budget if AMD can come out with a solid performing portable APU.

You got that right. If all I was going to do was surf the web and email, than mabey, but I can do all that on my phone or tablet.
That's why a custom Sager would be the only lappy worth considering for me, but alas I am not the "normal" demographic.

Neither am I, really. Though I can usually make do with consumer grade sh*t for laptops, because nothing I do on my laptops needs GPU muscle. Doesn't even need decent sound - I use the Native Instruments external boards for that. Just an assload of CPU power and RAM, and as high a resolution display as I can get away with.

But my current laptop has a little life left in it, nonetheless. I think maybe another year or so before replacement becomes necessary, supposing nobody drops a beer on it in the meantime. It's currently running an i7-3610QM quad, with 16GB. CPU utilization tops out around 75-80% when I'm *really* into the mix. Hovers around 30-50% under "normal" load. So I've a little headroom left, still, if not very much.

I guess I just ask too much from my hardware, at least I'm not doing this on a P4 3.2E any longer. :eek:
Now that was a nightmare, even though it was only with AVI-Divx-Xvid w/ VirtualDubMod.
 
4 core 8 thread with the biggest GPU stuffed on a single die in a form factor identical to my HP Elite X2 1011 would be my ideal. Maybe with a second GPU for crossfire in the battery keyboard base.

Sounds like a beast. Make sure it has HBM2 on the package like some of the MCP photos circulating. True desktop replacement.
Edit. There will be multiple dies and a stack of HBM2 on a "Multi-chip package."
