1080ti Pre-order, Retail, and AIB availability watch

Most people want AIB for noise and heat. Heat mainly to maintain boost clocks or maintain and over clock.

That's all there is to it. The absolute power draw and temperature are neither here nor there, all people are interested in is a) how loud is it b) how high will it clock. But as I said, it seems OC headroom is limited from the anecdotal info we have about Pascal cards in general and the 1080Ti Strix review.

Time will tell I guess, I plan to run my cards stock (no OC) for now but I will tweak the fan curve to see what boost clocks I can maintain. I will report back tomorrow night once I have things installed and setup.

Nowinstock.com sent me a bunch of alerts today for Nvidia direct, MSI, Gigabyte, and EVGA cards. Snagged one from Nvidia this morning about 2 hours after an email alert, and just got shipping confirmation. Seems stock is replenishing. Canceled my Newegg backorder!

I don't doubt that someone will get a PhD studying how much more quickly a gaming room heats up due to current leakage, but up until that PhD, it'll be zero'd out as negligible.

Max OC might be within a few MHz between the cards, but how well does it hold under load? That's where AIB cards set themselves apart from reference, and of course, acoustics.

Wasn't this thread for stock and purchasing overall and another thread for feedback and owner discussion on the card and its cooling?

Yes, until some people who don't want to wait for AIB cards thought the people who do want to wait for AIB cards are wrong for wanting to wait for AIB cards.

I was finally able to get one into my cart on nvidia.com a few minutes ago and check out.

Something handy ...
The MSI FE card comes with a click locking DP to DVI adapter.
I dont know if its dual link or high refresh capable, its not externally active.

It works great with my HDMI 60Hz 1080p display.
I previously had this connected via a DVI to HDMI lead.
Now it goes DP to DVI to HDMI and works fine with no increased lag.
But the option to change RGB or YCbCr has gone, it now looks like Full RGB permanently (I'm sensitive to this, it is full RGB).

I will wager that it isn't dual-link capable. Those have to be active to work.

I agree.
But I have no clue if it is powered through DP, it could be internally active.
Unlikely but possible.

That would be heading into proprietary territory. I think that's unlikely but certainly possible.

Gigabyte's FE card also includes the same adapter FYI.

Found the downside, no audio.
This would have been easy to implement unless they need the pins for Dual Link.
Hmmm.
Unfortunately I dont have a method to test here.

Has DVI ever supported audio? Dual link or otherwise?

Yes for a long time.
Some of the dual link pins on the gfx card have been repurposed to feed audio into HDMI out.
ie
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answ...-will-audio-be-transmitted-over-this-cable-to

Every gfx card I have had since after my GTX260 has been able to do this.

I didn't know that. Interesting. That doesn't look like it's part of the actual DVI spec but rather something NVIDIA did to make it so you could use the DVI port as an HDMI port with full audio capability.

Looks like it's not only MSI - my evga came with same adapter. It's either NV standard to offer that in box, or just manufacturers decided to offer that on their own.

Can anyone comment on the noise factor on these cards? I currently have a 980ti and it was much quieter than my previous 290x. That thing was loud. But I like the 980ti as far as noise level.

My question is, should I wait and save up my pennies for the Asus Strix or are these Founders Edition cards comparable in noise levels to the 980ti? I have a 1440p Ultrawide monitor. Would it be a waste of money to buy that Asus Strix card instead of these cards that you guys are getting now?

Card is quieter than the 980Ti stock cooler, but not by much. If you use a custom fan curve on the card - 65% gets to be very comparable to 290X reference cooler levels.

Definitely wait for the Strixx if you are worried about noise. Two bigger fans and more heatsink area will provide for a much quieter experience.

The strix is 6db quieter while being 15c cooler. Both those numbers are quite significant. I say wait. That's what I'm doing.

Back on topic. In stock at nvidia. Just snagged one finally! Well they took my order hopefully it goes thru.

Amazon charged my card last night, still says shipping on the 21st so we'll see.

They don't charge until they plan on shipping, so I imagine it should be on it's way. :D
That is what they claim but its simply not always the case as they have charged my card sometimes several days before an item is shipped.

When the AIBs out. This FE is burning my ears.

No problem when not overclocked, but yeah, problem when overclocked, at least two of them. One OCed isn't bad at all. Thinking about an hybrid cooling solution but there's not a lot need to overclock these puppies in games that support multiple-GPUs even at 4k, most will blow past 60hz without overclocking.

But sure, if you want top performance and not a lot of noise especially in SLI, you'll want an AIB solution that doesn't have the noise the FEs do.

Finally!!! :ROFLMAO:

I have an issue though. I'm using the DVI to Display Port adapter to run my U3011 but now I'm only getting 1600x1200 max resolution instead of 2560x1600. When I was just using my DVI cable on my 980Ti I was able to run the full 2560x1600. Any idea how to fix?

Yes, you need an active dual link DVI adapter. The one they provide is a passive adapter.

Max res 1920x1200 when not a certified active adapter.

Ditch the DVI, switch to DP. That's what I did.

Yeah, even a good active adapter may be quirky, I bought 3 at $90 a pop last year when I went to two 1080s without only 2 DVI ports but three monitors and to use 3d Surround they all had to be connect through DP. Kind of a waste of money unfortunately. Moving to native DP fixed all of the quirks.

Well crap, any recommendations on a good one? Best Buy seems to only have passive single link ones.
