Nightdive Studios is still hard at work with their System Shock remake, but those of you who are longing for another classic FPS to play before then can check out their Turok 2 remaster. Their last attempt at reviving Turok was positively received, so I imagine this one is no different. They even let you change between the N64 and PC versions of the soundtrack. You can get the game for 20% off ($14.99) at Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store until March 23rd.

Yeah, despite nostalgia kicking in a bit, these just feel like money grabs at $15-20 a pop.

I'm skipping this one. Had hoped it was a true remaster instead of a minimal effort at capitalizing on a good game.

Well, this is worth it for me, as the game is nearly impossible to emulate and it is the best game in the Turok series by far.

I'm not sure what they mean by remastered as these just seem like direct ports to the PC... ~20 years later.

So, better lighting, and 16:9 support and that's about it. No upgraded textures, no higher polygon models, no better effects....

Meh...

Yet. Wait for workshop modders to put them out. Just like with Turok 1.

I never played the original Turok games, but that doesn't look like a remaster at all. Shit looks like 2003 graphics.

Night Dive did a excellent job with the port of the first Turok towards the end of 2015, so this new version of Turok 2 interests me. The game speed and controls are what really set the first game free. I got a much better appreciation for the game, and could enjoy it way the fuck more than I ever did on N64. Modern resolution support is also greatly appreciated. They even included a level editor, which I've yet to check out. They've been pretty good with patches too. Plus they did shit like this post-release: "Replaced all sounds of the game with the N64 version of the game. Quality is actually significantly better than the original 1997 PC port." It did make a difference, I can tell you that. I just wish the game let you save whenever you want instead of having to deal with those damn save points, but I hear the second one does. Turok 2's new multiplayer sounds interesting. Split-screen, LAN, direct IP, even cross-play between Steam and GOG.

Just pulling info from the Steam page:
New Game Engine
  • Ported to the Kex Engine 3.4.
  • Full 64-bit compatibility.
  • Brand new UI system.

New Graphics System
  • Modernized deferred renderer.
  • Shadow maps and compiled light maps.
  • Screen-space reflections on textures and materials.
  • Dynamic and fixed-resolution sub/super-sampling.
  • New decals and effects.

Enhanced Gameplay
  • Improved character speed and manoeuvrability, including the ability to grapple ledges.
  • Updated maps.
  • Improved AI.
  • "Quick warp" feature allows instant travel to any previously visited portal.
  • Save and load anywhere.

Sometimes re-releases and ports to modern OSes/hardware is just about user convenience and improved playability. We don't always need completely new polygon models and completely redone textures and effects. Sometimes it just about having a nice, convenient way to play the game on current systems and OSes, with superior performance and controls, and a cleaner presentation. I don't think I've see anywhere that this game is being marketed as a "remaster." It's just a modernized port. I'm fine with shit like that, so long as the price is right. $20 is a little steep, but when this sucka goes on sale, I might bite. If it's like the first game, and plays waaaaay better than it does on N64, I'll consider that reason enough.

Really wish Night Dive had been able to get the rights to No One Lives Forever (lawdy they tried), would love to see modernized ports of both games on GOG (and Steam).

this is garbage, why not just remake it on a modern engine instead of "remaster"?
My guess is one takes 1000x more work than the other. I agree that "remaster" is a poor term for this though, "re-release for modern systems" would be better.

Huh? Looks like a mid to late 90s console game to me.

Yeah, I'll take a pass. This doesn't deserve even $10.00 to me. I enjoyed the original Turok immensely, not the remaster but the one on the N64. I'll just remember the game as being amazing for games back then. This is definitely a cash grab, all this company did was port it, textures and all to a new engine. Perhaps they paid for that engine, then maybe, if I wanted nostalgia a 10$ tag would be worth it to cover their costs. Other than that, I'll play other, much better ports, like the one I've been playing lately, Disgaea 2.

Remastered? ..... Hey, if you want me to take a shit in a box, and put a "Remastered" sticker on it, i got time...

It is built upon the Kex 3 engine, made by Kaiser of Doom 64 EX fame. Much like Doom 64 EX it just basically takes the original N64 game and runs it on a modern game engine, meaning the game almost plays exactly like the original with modern quality of life features. I don't see what is wrong with that. I believe that this and the first game are examples of how old games should be remastered.

Armenius, what about this:

Which it is.

Best Turok game by far, but very overlooked.

Indeed it is. Also looks exactly like I remember it from the TV commercials. Must have been one of the good ones on the N64.
