One of the coolest things about the Surface Book is that you can detach the screen, but it sounds like Microsoft has decided to get rid of that option and go with a more traditional design so they can price the sequel lower. This report claims that the cost of the original limited demand significantly, and its detachable design conflicted with the Surface Pro. I don’t really get the latter, since “Surface” means 2-in-1 to me.

…sources believe Microsoft is likely to announce the new notebook at the end of March or April. The new Surface Book is expected to adopt a clamshell design instead of its traditional 2-in-1 and will feature a starting price lower than that of its predecessors. Microsoft has recently cut the prices for its existing Surface Book products with the Core i5 128GB model dropping from US$1,499 to US$1,299. The sources believe the move is meant to help Microsoft clear its inventory to welcome the new product's arrival. The new Surface Book continues to feature a 13.5-inch display and chassis made of magnesium-aluminum-alloy. The product is expected to be priced at around US$1,000, much lower than the starting prices of Microsoft's existing Surface Books, which range from US$1,499-3,199.

I liked the idea of the surface book. But writing on it, while in notebook mode, was wobbily at best.

I've been anxiously waiting for the new surface 5 announcement - and hopefully less latency writing experience to go with it.

This will likely be competing directly with ASUS Zenbook 3 Deluxe, which I'm looking at closely, and should also be releasing around the same time. May the best ultraportable win!

LOL! You left out like the most import part of the Surface Pro. A much more accurate picture, because it's real:

As for the Surface Book line being a conventional laptop, I doubt it. There could be a conventional model but I'd bet there'd be a 2 in 1 model along side it at worst. 2 in 1s are a hot category right now so I don't see Microsoft giving up the SB 2 in 1 design at this point.

like my surface pro4, was thinking my next one was the be the new book. but if this report is true then it will just be the surface 5 if the new feature make it worth while.

So...it's just a notebook with a touch screen. BFD. I just bought a notebook, sans touchscreen, for $260 CAD. Yea, the one I removed Win10 from and replaced with Linux.

I was going to get the new book but was reluctant seeing all the issues it had with the first edition. This makes the decision easier. Especially if it's cheaper.

2 in 1 devices that used to be known as convertibles and the ability to use a pen with in Windows has been around in consumer form for 15 years. And now you're outraged?

What is with folks that bemoan the lack of choice in Windows 10 but berate the new choices in Windows 10?

SHit OS that spies on consumer not pushing PC laptop sales? why an i NOT surprised??

The surface book hinge, while functioning nicely is awful in terms of being thin and out of the way. Also the detaching thing wasn't really necessary. All the surface book features in a form factor like the lenovo yoga series would have been great, and no varying in performance or battery life depending on how you configure it.

Honestly if they make something like the current offering with the performance adapter and stylus in a 2-in-1 format where you can fold the screen to the outside for tablet mode, AND do it cheaper than before, It'll probably be my next laptop.

I agree with some of what you're saying. But I do like to occasionally use the Surface Book screen as a big ass tablet and the screen section is essentially the size and weight of the iPad Pro 12.9 so it's very manageable as a tablet. I'm hoping that Microsoft sticks with the detachable design as there are plenty of 360° hinge designs out there.

I don't need it but still I think it would be a good feature still.
