Hayao Miyazaki Films Collection - 154$

Wow, that's really tempting, I have 5 of those right now, so I'll pass.

It's not worth it, I suspect in a year or 2 they will release a remastered version that will finally include ALL of the supplemental features that were left out of this... at least, that's what I'm hoping

Back up to $224. I already have all the Miyazaki stuff on Bluray that is on Bluray (and other non-Miyazaki Studio Ghibli films). So it's tough for me to shell out even $150 for basically a collectable.

I mean personally I would love to see a collection that has all the Miyazaki films as well as all matching Joe Hisaishi albums.

That being said, if you watch the film The Kingdom Of Dreams And Madness it seems to me that Miyazaki has no interest in trying "make a buck". He is a very traditional artist (simpleton). Disney, or even the people left behind at Studio Ghibli might try to do something, but I see Miyazaki being completely happy to just live out the rest of his days working the garden or something.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Miyazaki is very strong in his convictions and lives a simple life. This guy is the most successful movie director in Japan and yet works out of a tiny studio, nothing fancy. Wish our artists were like this.

Is that collection the same as the Japanese one?

Cause these are the ones to own. Also encoded with MGVC granted you have the player.

Oh shoot, I need to get these. Love me some Japanese goodies! The art style is fantastic, fell in love with it.

heard he's coming out of retirement to do another full length film

You heard right, very exciting. Lot of press about it too if you look around.

Mildly off-topic, but if you like Miyazaki's stuff, you'll like this guy, Makoto Shinkai, who I'm sure most of us have heard of (great website by the way, especially if you also happen to be learning Japanese, however many of you are here): https://ztokyo.net/articles/movie-kiminona-shinkai_makoto-interview/

there's a new panasonic 4k player that'll actually decode MGVC titles into HDR colorspace so it's really cool. not wasted

unfortunately the 4k player is about $3,000+ USD

I just watched 5cm Per Second this weekend, and ya it was pretty, but I didn't feel any connection to it. The scenes didn't make sense. The backgrounds were beautiful, but were they hand drawn or computer? They looked a little too clean for hand. Also the characters were markedly undetailed compared to the background imagery.

"Makoto Shinkai had expressed that, unlike his past works, there would be no fantasy or science fiction elements in this film."

Well then what the hell was up with the several scenes of a major celestial event that had no connection to the rest of the shorts???? The rocket launch scene was awesome....the cinemtography of the shot was excellent.

Anyways, I will check out his other stuff as I find it. Also, the soundtracks have always been the other half of a Miyazaki film. The music makes the movies. 5cm had an interesting soundtrack, but it seemed repetitive. I'm not convinced he's the next Miyazaki yet.

Also, I thought Miyazaki's last film, The Wind Rises, was excellent. I didn't get it at first, but it was bold to make an anime documentary about a real person. And after I looked it up I saw the connection and inspiration that that person had on Miyazaki's life. I liked that he was able to keep it grounded in real life (outside of the dream sequences). I'm sure he had wanted to do something like that for a long time.

if you listen to wind rises soundtrack closer ALL sound fx were human voiced! like the prop engine sounds were all built from scratch thats very original i think. also it made it even more 'like a dream' engineering, art is like a beautiful dream!

it was also in mono! a throw homage from films of old!!!
