Resident Evil 7 is one of the few AAA game releases that also supports VR. Most VR games are short experiences that many gamers don't perceive as a day one purchase. Kazuhiro Takahara, lead VR engineer on the Resident Evil 7 Biohazard game, brought the entire RE7 experience from start to finish into VR. In an interview with Gamasutra, he explains what it was like to add VR to a game that was already one year into production.

Takahara talks about the challenges of VR and why he went with analog controls instead of a traditional VR warping control scheme as it broke immersion. He explains why the development team couldn't rely on still-camera cut scenes and old control conventions. Kazuhiro Takahara says that it was like working on two different games at once, as a dedicated VR team was added to the project to coordinate with the main development team in making sure that all scenes worked well in VR. Fascinating read and highly recommended as Capcom nailed it as a large amount of RE7 players utilize the VR mode in game.

Takahara adds that while VR presented a significant number of obstacles, he’s looking forward to working with the technology again.

“This is definitely something we’d like to utilize in future products. We learned a tremendous amount from working with VR. What was most inspirational for me was the development team taking initiative in tackling a giant challenge. There was zero assurance that we’d succeed, but we were motivated by positive response to Kitchen and recognizing that this was a brand new experience that no one had seen before."

Don't know how the hell people play these type of games in VR. I tried a short horror-genre demo a while back and it freaked me out! The immersion was too real. Scared like a pu$$y just playing the regular RE games in the dark on my TV let alone VR.

I can't wait to try it out! I have RE currently and it startles me enough, even though it is predictable, it still does it haha. Of course you have to play in the dark with either surround sound or full size headphones

Only 11 more months to wait!!!!! Damn exclusives!

I have been hesitant to play until VR is enabled. Hopefully the experience / controls are better than the PS setup.

If only Shinji Mikami or Hideki Kamiya or someone with similar balls of steel were still at the helm, the game may have been VR exclusive.

Alien Isolation in VR please.

Before I actually owned a VR headset I was a big proponent of the idea of Alien:Isolation in VR -- assumed it would be the "ultimate" VR experience. Now experiencing VR on a daily basis, and the "disconnect" from reality where your brain thinks you're in this virtual world, joking aside I think Alien:Isolation in VR would lead to PTSD and/or mental breakdowns for some players. Hearing the Alien slinking and clanking around in the air ducts and then suddenly it jumps on your back = goodbye humanity, the future is extinguished.

Even if you have a strong stomach, Alien Isolation VR could create a propensity to crying during thunderstorms and most friday nights.

All you did was sell me more on the idea.

There is a problem to this. RE 7 does not do native VR on the PC. It is VR exclusive to the PS4.

That's not a problem at all. More money going into VR and more people experiencing it and getting hooked = everyone benefits, all platforms. Fact.

Hate to admit but sometimes exclusives are a necessary evil of first gen, early adoption, to get things actually greenlighted by investors or the guy writing the check. But a rising VR tide floats all VR boats.

It would be cool if special tools were added to game engines to ease concurrent development of titles in both VR and traditional rendering.

No Kidding. This is what I like from a game, currently. Of course, as I would lay there sulking around avoid androids, alien and other humans... I'm willing to be that the stress of completing the game in VR would could almost be like in real life.

Now if they could get a WW2 simulator in VR. Win.
