“You’re building it wrong, kiddo!” Okay, no—what really happens is that Apple will not only pay for their education, but also their wages until they graduate from school. Aside from the obvious public relations angle, the point is to get kids back on the right track and convince suppliers to only hire those of working age. Unfortunately, this is one of those plans that looks better on paper, as many of these children would rather make cash now than go read books. And then there are those who aren’t discovered until it is too late. (I just realized this is a pretty old article, but those of you who haven't seen it may find it interesting.)

…Asia remains the world leader in child labor—though there as in other regions, the phenomenon is declining, thanks to industrialization. (Of the one in 10 children around the world who work, most are subsistence farmers.) In Apple’s most public child-labor incident—and the only one to date where it has named and shamed its supplier—auditors discovered in 2012 that a company called Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics had hired 74 underage workers after a labor agency, Shenzhen Quanshun Human Resources, helped families forge proof-of-age documents for their children. Apple terminated its contract with the supplier, and made the company return the children to their families, as well as offering them its remediation program. Apple publicized the case, seeing an opportunity to warn suppliers, improve its public image, and ding competitors.

When I visited Shenzhen I saw plenty of kids "working", the translator told me that the kids just like to help their parents and spend time with them....:rolleyes:

i find this as a great opportunity for millennials even if it is a different country. I still do not understand why I see young Americans homeless in their early 20s on the streets, holding signs to collect money.

have they become lazy ?

Yes

Apple is a US company? And now they are paying to educate the workers of our greatest competitor?

"paying for their education" it is still a communist elitist society... I guarentee you many of those children did not go to school after apple helped them. Many even from beijing do not get an education.

Funny...
Samsung factory in SEA is much worse than this and without any type of compensation.
On top of that, they are in hazardous environment.... But somehow no one talk about it?

Interestingly enough, one would think this would INSPIRE kids to go get a job at Apple for the free benefits, not deter them. (Also having parents force this decision on them as well)

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking.

Apple's heart is in the right place, I'm sure, but if you're poor and desperate and living in squalor in China, wouldn't you see this as a potential jackpot and "encourage" your child to work for an Apple contractor?

If that place is marketing, you're right. Apple isn't doing it because it has a good hart, only because its a great headline. I wonder how many kids has apple "adopted".
While I didn't actually went to foxconn (that I know of, since many factories are actually unnamed) its hard not to find them (and many of them are hiding). There are thousands and many of them don't even get paid but help so their parents can meet their quota.
