Much improved FOV on Rift mod

I was playing Project Cars and wondered why the Map wasnt on screen and realised I could see it in one eye if I looked left, but not the other eye.
I took the faceplate off to see what I was missing and its a big improvement.
The Goggles effect is dramatically reduced and I can see the map with both eyes all the time.
Also the streaks are reduced.

Like this, my eyelashes touch the lenses so I pulled it away a little and found the sweetspot for maximum focus is a few mm further back and only loses a little of the view in the corners.
I looked up online and found someone else has tried the same and discovered the Gear VR pads are ideal.

So I'm buying some Gear VR face covers and some sticky velcro to attach to the Rift without the faceplate.

Has anyone else done this?

I bought the 6mm foam VRCovers pads...they work well. There is also a mod for a certain sleep mask that works very well.

Do they fit over the standard faceplate or do they fit on with the faceplate removed?

edit
Ah I see they need to be used with their custom faceplates.
Unfortunately this does the opposite of what I want as they put your eyes further away from the lenses.

I am not sure what you mean by "custom faceplates". The Rift has velcro to attach the foam pads, which both the VRCovers and sleep mask mods work with perfectly. No modification of the headset needed, just remove the stock foam face pad and replace with these other options. The foam on these is thinner so it puts your eyes closer to the lenses, giving greater FOV.

I'm struggling to use VR Covers website, it wont load many images in Firefox (so cant see how it goes together) and crashes IE11.
From what I can read in firefox...

VR Covers website shows 4 options for Rift.
First covers the standard faceplace, "Oculus Rift VR Cover (Stretchable & Nosefree)".
This adds extra bulk.

The second needs their custom faceplate, "Oculus Rift Foam Replacement Velour".
This uses either the same length faceplate + the foam or an extended faceplate + the foam.
Again adds more bulk.

The other 2 are kits that include the custom face plates and come with lots of foam options, but none of them are for removal of the faceplate.
Both add more bulk.

Or at least thats how it seems.

I dont think that describes what you are doing unless their faceplates use Velcro.
My Rift does not use Velcro. Did you buy your Rift new?
Can you link to the exact VR Cover you are using? (I can view it for a moment in IE11 before it crashes :))
Are you doing a different mod with it?

Ah ok.
Unfortunately the VR Covers Rift pads dont improve the FOV, some make it worse.

That set has a "thin" foam one that I would imagine should improve FOV. You might be able to do the sleep mask trick as well and cut it to fit the Rift. They tend to be a lot thinner/less dense than the stock foam.

I have heard that just, in general, the Rift FOV is going to be smaller than the Vive, so maybe there is a limit to what you can do.

I would like to do the mod because taking the faceplate off (so my face is closer) reveals a fair bit more screen estate.
It is there to see, its not a hope.
But the lenses need to be quite a bit closer to my eyes.
The Rift fits exactly where my cheek bones are, that might be why I have the problem.
Its not a bad experience as I only realised when I couldnt see the map on Project Cars.
But why not have your cake and eat it :D

I have thought of stripping out the less dense sponge from the standard faceplate but it wouldnt do enough.
I think it will have to be the mod in my op.
I'm sitting on it a while to see what else I come across.
