every pascal card i have owned has noticeable coil whine

I've gone through 4 TXP's, 2 1080 FE's, a 1070 IN A GDAMN NOTEBOOK, and now the 1080 Hybrid.

THEY ALL HAVE COIL WHINE. WHAT THE HELL NVIDIA.

k that's it.
 
I havent had a PC without some form of coil whine in years. I gave up on a truly silent PC because of it, and decided I'd rather hear a fan slowly turning than silence other than whine.

it does seem like a futile effort.. but man. my 290x's were dead silent.. that is of course until they hard locked my system without warning and sent a shrieking sound through the speakers.
 
My SFF build's 1050Ti is dead silent. I replaced the old PSU, since it had serious whine at idle. Add in a better case fan, and I now have an absolutely silent desktop under my desk. I sleep less than 10 feet away, and it is absolutely inaudible (a first for me).

Either my ITX or MATX computer will become my Ryzen host, price/perf pending.

After 2 years, now my laptop had started making weird noises o.0.
 
i got around 20 amd cards and not a single one makes a peep (excluding fan noise) i have about 5 nvidia cards and 2 have coil whine :( I NEED THE 490 ALREADY!!!
 
My TXP only whines when it's hitting over 1000fps. On anand there was this thread to run 3dmark06 and holy carp the fps was hitting 2k fps.
 
No coil whine that I can hear in my 1080 FTW. Beyond that, the card is totally silent at the desktop, the fans don't even spin.
 
No coil whine from either my old 680, 980 or my current 1080. I think the last coil whine I had was on an Intel DH57JG board for HTPC when using USB in certain ways. Have you isolated the whine to the cards and not from somewhere else?

If you got so much coil whine on so many different cards I would check PSU/External power quality. Even for the Fiji coil masters, you find a card after 2-3-4 attempts without whine.

I would hazard a guess that the power supply has poor DC ripple supression, or if it originally had good ripple suppression it has since degraded.

Some cards will have could whine, but like the dude who "literally had 12 1080s from 5 different manufacturers" that had coil whine, a really good place to look next would be power delivery (PSU, Active PFC compatible UPS, etc.).

I agree wholeheartedly. It could just be my case having so many fan's, but I don't hear anything from my 2 Xtreme 1080's. For almost as many stories there are about coil whine there's a near equal amount about poor PSU/MOBO issues. On some occasions I've done tests and had the desktop literally on the desktop next to the monitor and still only heard the light sounds of fans. I don't know the db for my system but its usually reminiscent of having a small desk fan on low.

Even though the Corsairs I use haven't gotten the best of reviews for their tiers(80+ gold/platinum), I've never had an issue. The 1200w I use for the 1080 system is now pushing 4 years and more hours than I can keep track of. It used to power my 2xG1 OC970's and a SC780 along with 5 or 6 hdd's. I also usually have my systems plugged into 1000w+ APC UPS. They too may not always be at the top of the tier but clean stable power to the PSU probably helps also.

I always make sure to use all the plugs 6/8 8/8 etc. Regardless of what the number crunching specs say, I believe in giving the cards all the potential they can to do their job.

I have 17 AMDs , three old nvidias. The only one of the twenty that whines is a gigabyte 7970 ghz under load. I have two of these gigabytes, only one whines-- i chalked it up to eminent failure but here it is 8 months later still mining

I've had good power supplies paired with these cards as well (AX1500i, EVGA P2, Seasonic Platinum). Maybe I have terrible luck.
 
My last- OG 7970 had coil whine under load until I put a full cover water block on it, but I have to admit that i don't know if it was blocked by the cover, or if the whine was silenced by the improved cooling. My current 1080 came with an aftermarket (EK?) waterblock and never whines, even if overclocked to artifacting.

How do you know it was the 1070 in the notebook?

PSUs, especially on notebooks often have coil whine. You might not hear it until it gets loaded either.
 
I've heard coil whine once, ever. Could be some people are much more sensitive than others and at that point, it's not the companies fault to build to outliers.

both my 7970s right now have coil whine and alot of it as they aged they have got worse can hear them over my fans all 15 fans im making the switch to a 1080 hydro copper so i hope its pretty quiet lol.
 
Gone through lots of video cards as a PC hobbyist. Most coil whine that I've encountered can be drastically reduced and sometimes even completely eliminated by switching out and applying a high-quality, top rated power supply that has plenty of reserve - i.e. one that isn't being pushed anywhere near its rated limit.
 
sadly sometimes they just get louder as they age like both my 7970s didnt whine at all till about the last month and they are really loud now even at low fps.
 
I dislike coil whine as much as the next guy, but serious it's just a question of damping the vibrations. Coil whine is unavoidable and afaik the most effective solution is to use inductor whose geometry minimizes the vibration, I'm pretty certain the design of the gpu has no bearing whatsoever, so speak to asus, msi, etc cause they make the boards and they're in charge of the glue
 
I've had 3 different GTX 1060 6GB models. They have all have been free of coil whine. Also a 1050 ti that's quiet. That's one reason I like going with a mid-tier card rather than higher end (like the 960 vs 970; 970's had bad coil whine issues, 960's didn't seem to...
 
My son's Zotac 1070 doesn't. I'm really more an AMD guy when they can compete but I have to admit; The 1070 is a great card.
 
I thought I was having an issues with cards and coil whine. Turns out it was the PSU. Changed it out, and coil whine is magically gone! :)
 
Had coil whine with my 390 on a corsair hx650, replaced with a rm 850i and the whine went away. Replaced the 390 with my 1080 and haven't heard a thing, card is so quiet and cool even under load.

i've had a few computers over the years exhibit a weird "squeek" ritchety noise (very difficult to put into words but it seems like a noice a CPU would make when it "thinks" lol) when you do something and its quiet (like move the mouse) and i dont know wtf causes it. I've hd it happen when id o graphics intensive things and any small tests i did pointed to it being the GPU (8800 GTX at one point, a quado another time).

i feel perhaps it may be what is being spoken about here. :)

The squeak is probably from a bad fan bearing somewhere in your system. Coil whine is an extremely high-pitched audible whine. There is no better way to describe it. I'm sure you could find a video somewhere that caught it on a recording.

Adding to that, it's a mechanical whine that is load induced. Basically power regulation components vibrate more than usual. It also has a rapid paced ticking sound quality to it.

To be clear I've seen tons of people making posts like these, your previous PSU was very likely NOT FAULTY. It was just fine, it's just coincidence that that PSU with that card just happened to lead to resonance which increases amplitude of vibrations.
