Hey guys!

I am currently in the market for a 1080 after the disappointing CES, and my local shop has both EVGA 1080GTX SC and the MSI Gaming X cards in stock. So basically the question is; which one do you guys think I should get? Overclocking is of minor importance, noise is a big decision factor, and 3 year warranty on both through the shop.

So, any thoughts?

EVGA the fan doesn't spin (zero noise) unless you play a game with ACX 3.0 coolers

Between the two, get the MSI for the custom PCB. The Twin Frozr cooler is whisper quiet and the fans are also off at idle.

Between the two MSI. EVGA really fubared their 10X0 line this time. Too many complaints.
Another good alternative is ROG STRIX from ASUS. These puppies are also working fine for me for months.

Unless you plan to water cool, I vote MSI, between those two. EVGA's cooling solution this generation is a little weak, and the MSI card comes with a revised PCB design with more robust power circuitry.

MSI all the way , and decently good costumer service! Anything i had trouble with they replaced quickly.. They make great solid cool cards and to be honest , I never hear my GTX 1070 MSI Twin frozr which i would imagine the same design on the 1080

Between the two mentioned I would go with MSI.

For the first time since my 260 I moved away from Evga on my NV cards. With the 1080 I went with a Gigabyte G1 and am very pleased with it. It was a toss up between the MSI and GB. The G1 was almost $100 less than the MSI when I was looking so that made the final decision.

The G1 is very quiet even when the fans run up which is not very often since the card runs cool. At idle the fans turn completely off.

It lazily OC'd it to the magic 2050 and have never seen the temps go above 70. Most of the time during long game sessions it is in the low 60's.

But as I previously said, between Evga and MSI take the MSI.

Personally, I'd go with the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X. The MSI runs quieter and cooler and also has some nice clocks out of the box. If you go with the EVGA make sure you have one of the updated models that comes with the thermal pads already installed so you don't have to do it yourself.

At this time, I'd avoid EVGA. Any of the other big name brands should be fine. My favorites are Asus >= MSI > Gigabyte. I have a Zotac GTX 970 in one of my son's machines and it's been fine, but I've had mixed experiences with them.

if you buy evga its for the warranty and the good customer service

Exactly why I bought my 1080 from EVGA. I have dealt with their support in the past and was very impressed. And as far as I know the thermal pad issue has been resolved anyways.

yeah I mean... I was annoyed by the thermal pad thing and ended up just getting a hybrid. but honestly, their customer service has always been good to me so I wasn't mad.

when I rma'd my reference 980 they ended up sending me an ACX card.

check every manufacture and look for the one with the longest warranty. thats usually the one that really stands behind their product. ASUS is getting a little weak, i sent in a $20 motherboard i bought on newegg.com. the board went back 6 months in and they emailed me and told me it would cost $160 to fix the board. i left them and went to asrock. i know gpus and motherboards are different, but ASUS inspects and treats both the same.

I've been turned into a fan of the Zotac Amp! series for video cards. My 980ti from them is like built like a tank, and it runs cool with a massive factory OC. The fans also don't spin below a certain temp (most cards do this now, honestly) if that is a big deal to you. Another bonus is they tend to be a little cheaper due to lack of brand recognition.
