Going to pick up the LG 34" curved gaming monitor for work and play here.
Just wanted to know what kind of power i would need to run my activities.

The montior is IPS, 34", 144hz refresh and AMD freesync.

I have a Radeon R9 Fury i picked up on cybermonday.

For work, lots of sysadmin/dev ops stuff (virtual work, scripting/coding) lots of reading on screen

Games i play mostly: Eve online, World of tanks and World of Warships.

Will the card i have be sufficient or do i need another?

Much appreciated folks.

That's a large monitor, but relatively low rez, it's only 2560x1080, so it's not too stressful. You might find the display looks a bit pixelated, since you're stretching a low rez over a large area, but that's a personal preference you may or may not notice. I run a 34" UW that's 3440x1440p, and it's very nice at that resolution.

None of the games you mentioned are really going to benefit from having that super-high refresh rate, so it might be a bit overkill to go for that feature.

Your card will probably be fine with those games at that rez, they're not that demanding. If you want to push the monitor to it's peak 140fps, you're gonna need either a pair of 480's or maybe wait and see what Vega can do.

Your R9 Fury is plenty powerful to run that resolution at acceptable settings in any game, IMO. Enjoy!

I guess i should ask, should i look at the higher resolution (3440x1440p)? I think the text mine be pretty tiny but i may be wrong.

thx

You can adjust the size of text in Windows, and in your web browser. Higher resolution just means the text looks sharper.

It also allows for more detail to be seen in 3D games.

But if you went 3440x1440p, you would need more power for rendering games.

sharpness and clarity of text is important for me since i do a lot of coding/reading on a screen. Wondering if i should rethink my purchase and go for 3440x1440 ?

I've tried regular 1440p, the UW 3440x1440p, and a 4k monitor, and I loved the 34" UW the most. Best mix of sharpness without the text being too small, and while it does require more graphics horsepower, it's not nearly as demanding as 4k. But it's personal preference for games.

The 3440x1440 will give you plenty of room to do two work-type windows side by side, which is an awesome capability for productivity.

what is 144hz and 3440x1440? I might have to put it on my possible wish list...

Oh, never mind, those are casual games. Your Fury should be plenty.

Get the higher resolution. Most newer applications will obey if you adjust the size of text in Windows 10.

The only thing I find I have to force is web page rendering, and you can set a minimum text size on your preferences. It will break some web pages, but most will allow for some up-scaling without issue.

I personally have the Dell 34" (U3415W I think is the exact model), it's only 60Hz and doesn't do Gsync or Freesync. Asus and Acer have a newer, fancier version that'll run up to 100Hz and has Gsync. I think HP just came out with a similar one. They're a bit more pricey.

Since you're looking for Freesync, you'd be looking at different models.

They're all fairly similar though.

Check out the Microboard m340clz if you want 1440. $700 on ebay, 3440x1440 freesync at 100hz native. Best deal in a gaming monitor at the moment, IMO

text on a 3440x1440 is fine. the text on a 2560x1080 34" looks really large and not as sharp. a 27" 1080p monitor has the same ppi as the 34" 2560x1080, so use that as a gauge.

good to know....i had no idea...will influence my decision for sure. ty

Let me ask what more thing. A friend of mine is going to loan me the following monitor:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DMPK6DU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it is a curved 29" IPS panel. I know this resolution is slightly lower, but it is a smaller monitor. How would the text look on that (29"). I would assume it would be better than a 34" with the same resolution due to smaller screen?

Just collecting all the info I can before i make the purchase.

thx

If he's going to loan it to you, then check it out yourself. Text sharpness can be a bit subjective, so see what you see and make a decision based on that. It's going to be hard to judge from our end.

will do. Biggest thing i am looking for outside of a nice colors, is text that is easy to read (websites, email, coding, games etc.) to reduce any stress onmy eyes. Going from a 24" to a 29" should be huge, but going from a 24" to a 34" should be massive. I could increase the font size for easier reading (at least thats my idea at the moment. :) )

Cheers and appreciate the help

My Fury X drives my UW without issue. Nearly everything in most titles is maxed. More often you'll run into issues of the game engine not supporting the UW format. I now use my 4k for most of my gaming. The 34" 1440p can't be beat for office productivity though. It's just one of those items that I *won't* work without, now that I have one. It's so much better than two 1080p monitors.

SUper helpfful info guys.
Just thought i would update real quick.

My friend brought over the 29" monitor last night.
i plugged it in and used it for a bit before going to bed.

Awesome colors. Very nice. I can already see a huge difference in how much better it is over my older monitor. Night and day difference.

I only have one concern though. I think i may need to go bigger. It is good size, but with the wide option, which takesa a little getting used to, but with al the work i do, now i really think I need to go to the 34" IPS panel.
Just one question on that. Going from the 29" to the 34", i only gain space horizontally correct? Do i gain any space vertically ? Was not sure, but wanted to ask. I just need some more room for all the windows i would have open on a daily basis.

Cheers folks. THank you very much

you get larger area both vertically and horizontally, but with 2560x1080, you are just making the screen bigger, not getting anymore working area. 34" 3440x1440 is larger as well as more pixels so you have more working space on the monitor.

you might want to look at a 28" or larger 4K screen, as that has a lot of pixel space all around.

ahh, i should have clarified. I would definitely go with the 4k 34" monitor based off folks notes here. Sorry about that, but that would be my direction for sure.

The 29" screen you tested wasn't any "taller" than your existing 1080p screen. Physical dimensions may change, but you still have the same pixel real estate, vertically. The UW format gives you a bit over 30% more horizontal workspace over the regular width monitors. A 34" 1440p UW isn't physically taller than a 28" regular width 1440p monitor. It's only the extra width that comes into play.

That being said, I always tell anyone that sees my work monitor to measure their workspace before they think about a 34" UW. It's a much large footprint than 16:9 monitors. My UW about 6" wider than my 28" 4k monitor, and that's just screen space. If your model has integrated speakers or something along those lines, it gets even wider.

Edit: pardon the dirty desk and all.

Just to update here.
This is the 34" monitor i was looking at:

http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UM88-P-ultrawide-monitor

1440P and i would get 75mhz refresh rate with the FreeSync.
Correct me if i am wrong, but that gives me higher resolution and pixel density would should in theory provide ncie clear legibility on text and such (since i read a lot on a screen).

Thanks again everyone!

cheers!

ya, that one should be fine, this is my LG 34UM95-P,
pic is from 1 year or so ago,
the browser on the right is 1920x1400 and the itunes window 1520x1400

here is an image I just took that is closer to the monitor,

I still have my LG 34UM95 also and its a great monitor, hoping it will hold me over until OLED. Can't believe I have had it for 3 years now already.
it will be 2 years for me soon. I got mine when it went on sale for the second time at Newegg for $750 shipped, didn't have money when it was on sale the first time.

Everyone that comes in the garage and see's it comments that that is a huge monitor.

I have the non-curved 2560x1080 LG UW and its paired with an RX480 8GB, its runs this monitor perfectly for me. I absolutely love it. Never going back to anything less than an UW. Your Fury should suit you quite well!

A single fury card should do either of those 34" monitor resolutions just fine.

A single Fury X I had could run most games at 7680x1440 at medium to high settings ((3) 32" 1440p monitors in eyefinity)-- including shadow of mordor - which averaged at 52FPS at 7680x1440 on one card on high settings.

the lg looks awesome let me ask are there many games that run native at 3440x1440 if not are they distorted being stretched to 21:9
what video card to drive it?

I've only found one thats silly with 21:9 and its on purpose. Overwatch. Those bastards think its an advantage to have a wider FoV, so you get the same FoV as 16:9....but theres no black bars or anything.

It is an advantage. :)

Did overwatch also ensure the same amount of visible area is on the screen regardless of resolution? Or do you get more world view with higher res?

They also think its not an advantage to have over 60hz/fps.....I really do not know what they are smoking.

wonder if they will have this with freesync II
on the other one with FreeSync Yes (DP 48 ~ 60 Hz)
but then you are stuck with amd video card so never mind.

I'm running a RX 480 8gb and it maxes out 2560x1080 easily

The 3440x1440 is amazing.

A Fury X will drive it well and worth trying since you have it. There's no way it'll max everything though. I'd guess at least high in 90% of games though.

I have a 1080 and a Titan XP would be a perfect fit.
