I am not sure anyone that reads HardOCP actually gives a damn, but here is some cut and paste action just in case.

Mayer, five others to resign from Yahoo board; company to be renamed Altaba

SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, co-founder David Filo and others plan to resign from the company's board when it completes its $4.8 billion sale to Verizon.

Alt-aba? Al-taba? Dunno, don't care.

What does Yahoo own that's actually considered lucrative in a go-forward-to-the-future nod, all of their shit is leftover from the heyday of the 90's.....what, Verizon is desperate for old messenger technology!? :p
I do know that its mail service is still a huge undertaking.

Off with their heads?

Or course, new ownership is going to clean house and put their team in charge, this is most likely nothing abnormal.

However, given the revelations since the shopping and tentative sale, they might be in a heap of trouble depending on what the new masters see. Obviously, I have no idea what has gone on internally over the last five years, you can bet your ass there's a lot of very detailed examination going on at Yahoo.

Pardon, "Alt-tabby" or whatever.

don't worry altaba, everything is under controlla

I thought Verizon was trying to pull out of the deal or have the amount lowered because of all the breaches they conveniently failed to mention.

This smacks of arrogance from the CEO or the combined boards and excutives to rename an iconic name to something completely stupid. Sometimes I wish I'm a dictator and with that power force the company to go through with the name change just to see that $4.8B acquisition go completely down the drain.

Why the hell would you get rid of the name Yahoo!(?). WTF were they buying for $4.8B if it wasn't the name?

Yahoo owns about 15.4% of Alibaba, iirc .

Also, this name change is for the holding company that owns Yahoo. Oddly, it was also called Yahoo.

This is similar to when Google made their holding company "Alphabet". The brand Google is still around, but the investments they made had outgrown that brand.

Go look at the sites with the most traffic. Yahoo has several of them. Yahoo Mail, yahoo Sports and Yahoo Finance are all popular sites. Yahoo Finance and Sports are #1 sites in those categories by traffic and Yahoo's collection of sites make it roughly the 5th most trafficked site on the web.

They aren't. The holding company that's left after the sale is Altaba. That company will hold the stock in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan, which will be sold off to investors in the most tax efficient way possible.

I can't believe they would ditch the Yahoo name. That's a lot of money to invest into a company that no one is going to have heard of.

Yahoo auctions in Asia is huge. I'm sure there is a nice revenue generator there.

sounds like i need to start chaning things that use my yahoo email to something else.
I'm in the process of moving all my crap away from them. Huge PITA. With their security breach problem they ended up locking me out of an account via the web. I can still access it from my phone though. Just glad it wasn't the main account. Done with them - see ya!

Closed my Yahoo account last year after the massive hack. Buh bye.

They were a thing back in the late 90s and early 00s, but they haven't been relevant since the rising popularity of Google and alternative news and social networks. Changing the name says they already have one foot in the grave.

I'm with Kyle on this one. It's interesting to note but ultimately I just don't give a shit.

Maybe they're hoping to catch even a few clicks from people who mistype alibaba :D

Female CEO's are poison for tech companies that aren't already in dominant+comfortable positions. Prove me wrong.

Had no idea, but assumed this was why they were aquiring, not Yahoo itself but perhaps its holdings, its patents if it has any, and established infrastructure. I wasn't aware that Yahoo Sports and such were big-deals.....thing is the brand is dated, it's like someone making a big deal out of buying-up SEARS or something. To me, Sears is where I go to buy garden hoses, gas grills and maybe appliances, depending if Best Buy will deliver the same thing sooner or not, with Yahoo I just can't imagine anything with them being modern. So maybe this talks to the issue with branding, the Yahoo name people recognize, but are they recognizing it the way I am....as a fossil.

Time to dump the remaining instances of my yahoo.com email acct, and take down the Marissa Mayer dartboard.

Alt Tab-a. It's what you do when you find yourself on a yahoo... err, altaba page.
(Or is that ControlDubya)
