How Immersive are VR Games?

With the Rift, exceptional now that it has the Touch controllers.

I couldnt get past the tiny focus area and fresnel rings on the Vive unfortunately.
The low res is less apparent on the Rift because its not as zoomed in, but there is a mild goggles effect because the image doesnt fill your field of view, choose your poison.
Both have streaks on bright objects unfortunately. It cant all go right on first generation I suppose.
The actual experience is phenomenal.

This.
I have a choice, play pool or get rid of the table and have the best VR experience.
I've been looking for a top notch pool game on VR heh.
Tried Pool Nation FX (free version to see how it looks) but the image is royally screwed up.
Any others worth a try?

Tried the Vive, couldnt gel with it and ended up with the Rift.
This is the VR experience I was looking for :)
I keep seeing folks saying Rift has better image quality then Vive or some what better. Is that true? How much so? Maybe HardOCP can do a comparison between the two, controller comparison and any other comparison.

There is an excellent image quality comparison on reddit, but I can't find it right now. What it boils down to is that they have slightly different optics where the Rift pushes more pixels to the center of the view giving slightly more clarity and less sde at slight loss of perceived FOV. They also have brightness differences where the Vive has more detail in dark scenes but the rift has deeper blacks. The Rift also supposedly has a slighty larger sweet spot. Rift has a little less color separation but more god-rays.

It'll be a user preference thing and I don't think one is markedly better than the other, but I haven't used a Vive while I have quite a few hours in the Rift. It can also depend in facial structure as where your eyes end up in relation to the lenses makes a difference.

In my experience the image quality was better than I expected with the Rift by quite a bit - I had a DK1 so expectations were a decent improvement on that, but it ended up being massively improved. Yes, things can be a little blurry in the distance, but not distractingly so. SDE is almost a non-issue. If I look for it, I can see it but it's never noticed while playing anything. God-rays can be distracting in menus or loading screens but rarely noticed in-game.

I have a feeling we'll see a comparison on here soon as I think Kyle has a Rift and touch controllers now, so I'll be very interested in that comparo. I've already purchased a Rift, but it's still good to get an unbiased look at it in a bunch of different situations.

The worst issues I had with the Vive were the tiny sweetspot and outside that it was much more blurry as well.
You can also see the fresnel rings.
The resolution is pretty low but its nowhere near as apparent on the Rift, it actually looks higher res.
Must be for the reasons you found, nice one.

edit, ah didnt notice I said most of that already in this thread :)

How is the comfort between the two? Some say the Rift slides all around the place while the Vive does not. The Vive is more front heavy while the Rift is lighter. Man I wished I could just go to a store and compare both of them side by side to see which one fits me better and works better with my eyesight and IQ.

Hmm.
You can fit either as tight as you want but I found I had to strap the Vive on much tighter due to it being front heavy, otherwise it moved.
It gets much worse when you move fast or stop quickly so it has to be quite tight.
The Rift is not only lighter but doesnt need to be anywhere near as tight, it is less of a problem.
I'm not finding it easy to follow how either of them can slide around unless they are fitted too loose.

I too found the Vive heavier and front heavy, to the point of distraction. But I suppose you will get used to that.
It was not as quick or simple to put on and wasnt very comfortable.
The earbuds were a pita for me, even the smallest fittings kept squeezing out of my ears and got uncomfortable and the sound wasnt as good either.
The Rift is a breeze to put on and get the earphones in place.
Its a different level of comfort and ease of use.

Without a doubt the Rift has the better overall IQ. Its not a close call.
I am but one person though.
I tried to get support for the image quality issues but there wasnt any.

Do what you can to try both before buying.
I was fortunate to try a friends Rift before I got mine.

If you fancy taking a crack just buying one...
In the UK dont buy the Vive first unless you use a credit card.
They didnt respond to me even once and I tried hard to get support. I got either absolutely nothing or only automated responses.
I spent 20 minutes holding on a premium cost line with no answer, using a phone number that came in an automated email.
I used the automated system to cancel the purchase for a refund but they didnt give a shipping address.
The new automated emails came with a message saying to use this email address for further help.
I asked many times for the return shipping address and got no reply at all other than more automated messages stating the answer has been provided below. But there was no information.
I didnt know what to do for a while because you dont just ship a £750 item to any old address, it could end up a total loss.
So I turned it over to the bank who sent them a letter.
They also got no response so they refunded me a week later.
Bizarre.
I didnt once get any human contact.

I am playing Trickster VR which is a full movement game and have no problem with sickness.
Its not too bad of a game. Finished Vanishing Realms which was fun.

Played The Thrill of the Fight. Good exercise and fun. I had to take a few breaks between swinging/dodging like a mad man.

VR has really good potential with games that make you exercise, but I'd like someone to solve the problem of sweating all over the headset. Perhaps an ACTIVE version of the headset.

Fit a mini fan, yer gonna need it!

I bought Doom 3 BFG edition because someone has ported it to VR.
And there is a high res texture pack.
it is by far the best VR experience.
Touch controllers are fully utilised with both torch and gun.
You duck and lean with your body and can reach the gun or torch round corners, over objects, through gaps...

It was only £6 for Doom 1, 2 and the 3 Doom 3 versions!
The Doom 3's are all VR.

And it doesnt need a killer PC.

Yeah, it could use some sort of active face cooling / antibacterial face pads.

I should try this out. I don't know how many times I played Doom 3, at least four times and probably more. Getting inside this game sounds very cool!

I just tried Skyrim and I can't wait for some rpg's like this built from the ground up.

Jeez I'm gonna die of VR-itis.
Didnt think to look up if Skyrim could be VR'd !
I havent got space to put Skyrim back on my SSD.
Must get more SSD. Can this be VR'd?

Yeah, I didn't think to either until I saw it in VorpX. It worked great. Looked like you were there.
GTA V I didn't like as much.
