de-lidding 6/7700s is nothing. how about a 6950x?!

I was cringing! using the vice method on a 6950x!



vice method is the safest way to do it, sans a custom made delid tool. you might be thinking of the first vice method where people actually whacked the cpu with a blunt object, the new method is pretty much noob friendly
 
now that I think aboot it there prob aren't delid tools for 6950x. but holy shit would that be sphincter tightening!

You keep typing 10-20c drop. Got a link to this? How is CLU going to out transfer actual metal to metal transfer? Btw, are you referring to der8auer in regards to temps?

ps: the 10-20c drop is the average people are seeing on de-lidded 6700/7700 etc, which are not soldered.

?? You're just implying a gain then? It's confusing/misleading man. Relidding enthusiasts chips for the level of danger is moronic. Even in der8auer's case he got an at best 4c average temp drop swapping to CLU. Yea, he was, am disappoint.

You did though. That's why I asked why oh why... its nutty to replace the solder on a 6950x only to put the lid back on. As I wrote above, it'd be one thing if he went bare die but he just put the lid back on lol.

 
I didn't realize that the 6950x was soldered and that the temp drop would be insignificant, so that part is void. everything else I said applies.
 
Man, I hate Coolabratories Liquid Metal Ultra. That shit dried out on me on four different applications after six to eight months - a 3930K, 3920XM, and two 780Ms. It wouldn't be so bad if temps didn't increase and removing the dried out liquid metal wasn't a HUGE PITA.

I've since gone to ICDiamond and now Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and haven't looked back.

People usually get like 5 degrees better Temps by removing the IHS compared to soldered
Removing the IHS

Only thing being problematic about solder could be that the IHS is not very even
I remember having to lap my q6600 because of this

Dropped 15°C on my 6600k by delid and using Gelid.

I don't see how temps could be improved on a soldered chip, unless it's like iron or something. Tin and silver are pretty good thermal conductors.


The the "dry out" clu people, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Barium doesn't dry out.
