First of all, studies like this are just a ridiculous waste of time and money. Secondly, what kind of zombie apocalypse study doesn't take into account that humans might just fight back?

Researchers at the institution determined how long humans would be able to fend for themselves before falling victim to grisly, flesh-eating zombies. Their results: less than six months. “As the zombie to human ratio increases, this becomes less realistic,” the study notes. “We have also not included the possibility for the humans to kill the zombies. Including this may give the humans a better chance at survival.”

It'd just turn into scorched earth. See a dozen zombies? Drop a nuke on them! XD

Even if they took account of humans killing the zombies... studies like these are STILL a waste of money.

Who the hell is funding this? Hope not taxpayers.

It's not a real study, as the name of the journal reveals: "Journal of Physics Special Topics An undergraduate physics journal". It's a class project from one group of students.

Back when I was in school I wished I could have done physics papers that were only 2 pages long and had the help of other students. The labs were like 4 or 5 typed pages including actual measurements, math, graphs and analysis... every week. :p

If you ever want to read books that do a smarter interpretation of the zombie apocalypse you should read "The Remaining" or "Arisen" book series. Both are written from a Soldiers perspective, the latter being more geared towards veterans and deals heavily with Military stuff.

The students paid to do this "study", which is a mathematical exercise using fictional disease contagion vectors as the factors.

This group of students applied very useful skills and they paid for the pleasure to do so.

They don't take into fact the fall of basic human society along with it. Sure you would have Zombies everywhere, but you would also have the worst of the worst people breaking out of prisons or just taking advantage of the situation around the world, causing all sorts of havoc & killing humans in the process. If TWD has taught us anything, its that Zombies are to be feared, but Humans are to be feared far worse.

Also remember, if it got really bad, there wouldn't be anyone to monitor the nuclear power plants we have, they would meltdown and cause radiation to spread all over the globe. It would be a radioactive zombie holocaust.

Base on science, there should not be human, or any living creatures walking on earth.

The remaining is a great series and one of the few that actually nails 95% of the veteran aspect, my wife hates watching war movies with me because so much stuff out there has zero clue

And as for the power plants, are modern reactors have fail-safes, that wouldn't happen. Maybe a combo of human error and destruction and sheer shit luck a few might have problems, but the globe, yea, it'll keep chugging along.

Not if this guy has anything to do with it, I'm sure there are a few out there...

I would think they would scram them before it got that bad its not like one day thers 0 zomibes and the next billions.

These systems don't run forever and still require human intervention for maintenance etc.

And with no one around it will eventually collapse on itself. So yes Nuclear radiation would eventually kills all the humans and animals. The only thing that would survive would be the zombies and roaches.

And you think acid rain is bad wait until you have rain with nuclear particles in it.

"Nuclear plants will melt down
Although nuclear plants have stopped producing power, that doesn’t mean they would be harmless if not manned by humans.

About a month after a mass human exit, emergency generators would run out and the cooling pools used to control nuclear substances would evaporate, causing mass nuclear explosions far worse than Chernobyl or Fukushima. Pockets of dangerous radiation that could potentially remain for thousands of years would span the globe."

I would steal a boat and make my way to a nice warm Island with fresh water and fruits where there are no zombies.

IRL the military would put down a zombie outbreak very quickly.

The most realistic portrayal of a Zombie outbreak is probably Shaun of the Dead of all things. Shit would get bad for civilians for like a day. But slow moving, stupid zombies would be no match for all of the firepower the military has at their disposal. An outbreak would be put down within days.

I'm sure they would still wash up on the beaches from time to time. Zombies can traverse oceans, the Zombie Survival Guide told me so. That would actually be the worst places to go, unless you're good at fishing or farming, eventually the food supply & resources on the island would run out, an offshore Oil Rig would be better, but then you'd have to worry about Hurricanes.

None of that shiz matters. The real question is the ideal zombie caliber.

It's not 22 LR because you also have to worry about humans, especially humans in body armor, and 22 LR is basically useless for that. Also not great for longer distances, obviously.

5.7 would be awesome. Decent range, decent penetration, with the right rounds is great against body armor. It's also relatively very light/small (which is extremely important because you're invariably going to end up on foot at multiple points during/after the apocalypse). The guns that use it also have relatively high cap mags, which is nice.

But there's just not enough of it, and most of what there is of it isn't the stuff that's good against body armor.

I think it's gotta be 223 and 9mm.

The Main problem will be keeping control of your island.

As soon as a bigger group with more guns fines it unless you have the man power or guns to defend it. Survival of the fittest will be 100% intact now.

Really that's the biggest problem in a Zombie Outbreak situation, other humans. Zombies are no more than rabid animals. Humans have motives.

Sigh the biggest issue with zombie this zombie that is WHAT TYPE OF ZOMBIE..
There are 3 main groups of zombie
1. Plague
2. Supernatural
3. False

the first one is the generic walking dead some infectious agent is responsible there is actually a sub category here Living and dead.
Living plague zombie type- Examples include 28 days series and I am legend (this actually is a bad one to use as the monsters in this are not zombies in some instances).
The living zombie plague is a short lived plague as it will eventually end with every single zombie host dead unless it does a zoonotic shift then it will probably kill every animal it can infect. You would simply need to outlast all of the hosts as eventually their bodies would decay to the point they could not move and would eventually die. 28 days later is a good example in that the zombie virus was similar to rabies and after 28 days if the hosts could not feed they would die in 28 days... I am legend is a bad one because in some versions the "infected" are more like vampires than zombies they are sentient and actually can still function on a higher level.

Dead Plague zombie type- The host is dead through unknown means the host remains somewhat functional it should be a safe bet that after about a year or two the bodies without a method of preservation would dry out and eventually fall apart from my research unless other factors contribute all walkers outside of wet areas would be jerky after 6 weeks if you live near or around a desert area they would dry out and be unable to move and eventually rot away to bones within a year... Marshlands they would remain juicy longer but in the end would rot to bones quicker...

Second type supernatural- You're fucked unless you stop the source or the source goes away. This type is so much harder the zombies are reanimated not through biological methods but done via mystic rotting would not necessarily happen and you could even have bare skeletons walking about...

3. False
This is a category that covers all non zombie situations be it Voodoo, parasyte (the thing, Las plagas in resident evil) Parasite control hosts like puppets in some cases the puppets survive most times they don't...

I believe these types of studies are fun ways to study the spread of a highly contagious unknown disease and thus are not a waste of time/money. Research is often theoretical and there's no reason not to do it using a trope that most people can relate to in some way. It also means that lay people are more likely to read about it than if they did it on some made up disease that nobody has heard of.

Agreed. I wonder if when Jesus comes back will he still be riding a dinosaur? Or will he roll up in a Tesla...

Garth Ennis's Crossed comics, published by Avatar Press, feature "living zombies" of the plague variety. They still retain their intellect but lose all sense of propriety and often restraint; the pathogen essentially turns people evil, and spreads by contact with bodily fluids. Crossed makes Walking Dead (both the comic and the tv show) look like a frolic through the park.

Well this appeared to be more or less classwork for some undergrads based on the paper pdf. Since they have to learn the statistical math, and tuition got paid, not really a waste of anything. Still a shitty simulation by far, but lots of math learning is based on toy examples.

I saw a movie that must have been inspired by this series. It's called Bloodwork and came out in 2011. Trial patients are exposed to a drug that makes them have incredibly fast healing and regenerative powers, but the side effect is they lose their sense of disgust and moderation.

Definitely depends upon the type of zombie. Even just a plague, some zombies are dumb and slow, while others are intelligent and fast. How anyone dies to the dumb and slow ones, I don't know. But you have the intelligent and fast ones from the Return of the Living Dead (I believe part 2?) which you're totally screwed. And you can't just kill them normally, otherwise the plague will contaminate the water supply, and if you burn them, it will contaminate the air.

Number one, your "reference" isn't a scientific journal or study by the DOE or a university. It's a click-bait type article from a travel blog.

I've worked in nuclear power for quite a while, and this is mostly crap. Yep, some plants would have problems. Most would shut down and then just sit and rust for a couple decades, and maybe leak a bit. But the majority of the radioactive material would remain contained inside the probably collapsed buildings. Even if you had one or two plants with "Chernobyl" type events, you'd only contaminate the area for a few miles around the plant with DANGEROUS levels of radiation. Sure you have some airborne spread, and possibly leeching into ground water, but you're talking much, much lower levels of radiation. We're not talking radiation that will kill you within hours, we're talking radiation that will increase your chance of cancer by a couple percent if you're exposed to it every day for 10 years.

You would hope that the people running the plants would be smart enough to do a shutdown before it got too bad.
most if not all plants have dead man safeties so that in the case of sudden death of all workers the plant will go into a shutdown mode. Similarly most things that need monitoring will go into a shutdown state rather than be allowed to plow out into the end of the line... In my research on this subject i found it in america at least the natural gas lines would remain pressurized as long as there was no damage to the infrastructure for 10 years at least and in some areas they would remain pressurized indefinitely as the way they are pressurized is they are stuck into the ground where the deposits are and nothing more is done other than regulating how it is doled out... We still have power plants that run off NG so those would run until the dead man safety or something went wrong. hydro would run until something went wrong... solar would run until the panels degraded... the biggest issue is the grid would not be managed and transformers would blow and as areas went down and came back randomly more would blow... The biggest long term issue would be in northern dwellings some situations due to lack of power/water then winter would come pipes would freeze and eventually many geysers of water would occur if suddenly power came back turned on the water supply... So in the days following the end of the world survivors would want to go manually shut off water/gas to every residence to prevent damage...

also the areas you want to setup a safe zone in are rural areas that get cold wyoming south dakota north dakota being near a hydroelectric plant would be a good thing not required you also want to be where a decently equipped hospital is but lower the population the better...

I never posted that to be scientific reference it was just what could possibly happen. This whole news story is not real anyways and it is a what if scenario nobody really knows what would happen.

As long as you refuse to take the zombie threat seriously, you will increase your risk of succumbing. Paradoxically, by researching zombie infection vectors, preparing holdfasts, buying land in Greenland (in the northern part), keeping my boat fully provisioned, all helps ensure that I do not need to fear a zombie event.

;)
