HTC Vive Owners Thread

I must have missed something with this.. I saw this, thought it was neat, but after about 15 minutes I was done. Was neat to street view the house I grew up in and zoom around, but outside of that and some of the tours? Meh. Uninstalled.

Was there something I missed?

Ummm... the rest of the planet perhaps? :D I guess some people just like to explore...

Does Arizona Sunshine have ~$30 worth of content? I am leery of spending over $20 for a VR title these days given the overall quality of many.
Definitely worth it for me. It's one of the closest thing we have to a AAA VR game. It's got everything: great graphics, good storyline, intense horde mode, really good co-op integration, good gun mechanics. It's probably the fullest content zombie game on the Vive yet.

I'm pretty happy with it. Im sure it'll go on sale.

So the Vive is once again on sale for $699. However, now that the Oculus touch is out I have been reading that perhaps the Vive is not the default choice anymore. Could anyone who has used both chime in with a recommendation?

I have tried both. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Oculus has slightly better hand motion controllers, and the Vive has better room-scale implementation. Room-scale with the Rift is much smaller and has USB wires from 3 sensors going all through your room back to PC. Vive just has 2 sensors and communicate wirelessly so just need to plug them into AC power.

Roomscale is a much more compelling experience for VR. If you have the room go for the Vive. If you have very limited room or plannjust for a seated experience go with the Rift.

This is a common assessment I've heard. I went with the Vive for this reason though some swear the Rift is a lot better. Comfort of the headset is one area that the Rift gets better comments though so far with the Vive it's been fine, the headphone solution is better on the Rift. The earbuds with the Vive are kind of crappy and I went with some over the ear headphones. I little clunky with the wires though but light and comfortable.

The Rift also has better exclusives though many can be made to work with the Vive though I've not tried that yet. I'm seriously having a blast with the Vive. I'm happy for now until what happens next gen with this tech.

Without question to me. The only thing I don't like about it is the movement, it feels a little wonky, but the gun action is fantastic.
Hmm, well it is a normal game converted into VR o maybe that's why the movement feels wonky. Have you tried Onward? Movement mechanism is done well there.

Wow! Initial impressions are rather Awesome. Wonder if the wow! factor will wear out. Vive Play Area space below, ~ 9ft x 8ft.

Did Valve The Lab and all sections of it. I am having zero issues with nausea etc. nothing there at all. The screen door, rings, readability was all better then I expected too - I pretty much blank those out.

Will continue adventure . . .

Nice! My play space is a little bigger than yours, not by much. SDE is my biggest bother, but once immersed, you forget anyway. wow factor won't go away, but after about 2 months i started to feel the lack of content. still...for more wow check out the blu and google earth

I have had the Vive for nearly 9 months now since its release. I think the WOW effect wears off a little bit after a few months when you brain adapts to the Vive. I'll take a week or 2 break from the Vive and the WOW factor comes back when I return.

Dark Souls fan?

Caveat though is you can only play a mage. It has the same vibe as Dark Souls I know there is a dodge but I haven't been able to do it yet. It also cheats I think. I teleported a bit of a distance away so I could get some distance and cast my spell, but the creature in the middle of it's swing where I was previously seemed to slide over automatically to a set distance and it seemed to catch up way too fast. BTW they hit pretty hard just like in DS. You die pretty easily.

lol, did Trials on Tatooine - AMAZING but I was about 1" to 2" short in ability to push the buttons. My space was .2m short. I could overlap my desk and probably get those .2m. Anyways that was good - real good.

Went to Serious Sam First Encounter and was blown away on the start up screen with I believe is the temple in Thebes. Anyways did fairly well with running around in Hatshepsut freely (no teleporting) but did not have very good controls on character - rather erratic with the touch pads on the controllers. I wished I had a joystick instead. Anyways after about 30 min I started to feel a little disorientated and figure I should not push it. I intend to see if I can get down the controls better and maybe try the teleporting a little as well. Seeing full size characters like in real life, in structures that look totally right in proportions is something I was not suspecting - A totally different experience and really was not conveyed well by other or more likely I wasn't understanding well the VR experience.

The experience is so much different that I am sure I will enjoy the traditional games just as much as before on a monitor combined with what VR gives.

That is very encouraging and I will have to give it at least 3 months at least to be more objective. Right now I am just blown away.

It's hard not to be. The VR gaming experience is just so different, it's like nothing else out there. This is the stuff I have been dreaming of since I was a small child. I remember seeing a VR helmet at Disney 25 years ago which probably cost $100K at the time, and was dreaming of it ever since.

I remember computer shows in the 90's with VR stuff - same here waiting for this to become available. Pretty exciting stuff.

Anyone use a gun prop for Onward? Upcoming feedback weapon controllers would be interesting.

Personally I have kind of given up on the idea of gun peripherals in VR. It would only really work for a game that only had say rifles in it with that peripheral. The big problem with it is it's non-standard and requires support in each game from the developers. Unless I see that it has become supported in basically a lot of games then I don't find it compelling enough to buy one especially at that price. Grenades in Arizona Sunshine would probably become auto thrown with a touch of a button in the direction the gun is pointing with this device. I guess the game dev would make it so that you'd only get one gun then in the AS game if you have this? I would say seeing a handgun in VR while you have this in your hands would be pretty immersion breaking.

I would like to see more of Onward's rifle mechanics utilized Those are so far the best I have used.

I set mine up yesterday and it's mind-blowing. Worth every penny. It's a no-brainer if you have the rig, money, and floor space.

Lack of floor space is why I don't want it. I just want a simple VR setup where I can sit in my computer chair and play my flight sims and racing games. I don't want to walk around and am a lazy sob.

You don't have to setup room scale and it doesn't really need a lot of room to be effective. I have about a 7'x7' area and so far I've not had any problems with anything except a bowling game I needed to start from a certain line as sometimes my follow through would hit the edge of a bookcase.

Where my computer is I don't even have that much room. Just a foot and a half behind my computer chair is another desk where I put my printer and stuff. I'm sort of in a cubicle.

That would make it tough for even standing experiences. There's still a lot that can be down from a sitting position but yeah, some room for standing and controller movement would be much better. I think the movement is what makes a lot of the experience interesting.

OK, thx. I will hold off until I move then because I am planning to get a bigger place soon anyway.

You can do that with a Vive...doesn't have to be set up as room scale.

I've considered buying a third lighthouse to use while seated at my computer, for that purpose.

Why would you need to do that? I guess it would have to do with how you have them setup. I have no problem using the controllers from my main workstation seat but there's a clear line of site between the bases in that position.

Yeah, I think I mentioned it earlier in the thread but my office desk and Vive room are on opposite ends of the house, so I have to drag the tower into the Vive room to play, normally.

I've considered trying to get a long-distance setup going with HDMI and USB extenders, but the price is a bit high and it seems to only work up to 50 FT, which might not be long enough.

Also, the lighthouses are installed on the walls in the Vive room and if I move one to play it seated, I would have to re-calibrate every time.

You can't apologize for telling the truth.
Apparently this guy has not read those actual VR reviews.

Check this out:

I already have a modded head mount setup but...that official one looks real nice.

I take it we will be able to change out the head straps for the new head mount. The tracker looks to be way cool, wonder how much it cost and if you can use several of those for body positioning, a.k.a fighting type games.

You might want to make sure they are not loaded and nothing in the chamber :), VR may turn into just an R.
Actually what you are even suggesting is irresponsible at best. When I rig it up it will be with a bolt that has no firing pin for sure.
