“Rogue One” Reviewed: Is It Time To Abandon The “Star Wars” Franchise?

Just got back and I am impressed! Yes some CGI but it was done extremely well.
I have NO problems with this movie and see it as a perfect episode 3.5.

Explosively good

And the one big kudos thing back to the original episode IV film, the Star Destroyers (or similar to that - slightly smaller versions) had near enough the same lighting effects as seen with the use of models in the original film.
The effect where it is near white looking when the sun light shines on part of the ship, and of course that great klaxon sound effect along with the way they do look very much the same on screen as the models ( pre-sequels with its CGI rendering ruined the feel of those ships IMO).
Cheers

Oh great, another movie where the heroine is the main badass, does everything better than any male possible, with a racially dense universe where the evil empire is led by caucasian men. Terminator Genysis, Mad Max, Force Awakens, ugh... we get it, women are the stronger and smarter gender... What I want to see is an obese white single 45 year old bi-polar woman that had multiple abortions in her past, conquering the world/universe where bad guy is a non-caucasian male.

Well it would had been awkward if in Force Awakens Hans/Leia kid was racially different to them :)
I get what your saying but it needs to be remembered the film industry was white dominated for quite a long time, your point could had been made about episode IV/V/VI.
And no I would not want to see that 45 year old example in the Princess Leia metal bikini outfit from Return of the Jedi :)

But your context has merit in another way, if this had been reversed racial/gender situation in those modern films and others there would be a huge outcry by SJW/political correctness groups.
Cheers

I'll be honest. I'm an 80s kid and I've watched the original trilogy about a 250,000 times, I'm not exaggerating. I collected all the toys as a kid and again as an adult. Seen all the movies animated series etc.

For myself I hated the Prequels. I remember being a teen on opening day of phantom and thinking it was kinda bad and so on and on. I had the sneaking suspicion when Kylo lit up his saber in the trailers that Force Awakens was gonna suck. More generic star wars pandering nostalgia crap and right as rain it sure enough was. I can't even bring myself to watch Force Awakens more than the time I saw it in theaters. Kylo Ren's whiny bullshit just drives me up a wall. but also there wasn't much complexity to any of it. nothing to reflect on.

But man, holy shit. For all it's flaws I'm struggling to say I like Empire Strikes Back more than Rogue One.

Rogue One is for all the fans that actually cared about the story and the universe of Star Wars and don't cum themselves every time a Jedi or a Sith show up on screen. This is a grim dirty war movie. For me it was near perfect. My only disappoint is that yeah they did do some questionable editing or whatever. I will say if this ending was a lighter "disney" certified ending I can't possibly imagine how dark the actual ending was. Let alone Vader's "Old Boy" impression. I never imagined Disney would go that far.

i've watched most of the star wars movies, but I don't remember what any of them were about.
that's how much i give a shit

Guys, more horrible news coming in.

picture hosting

48 hours after release.. With these kinds of numbers I can't imagine Disney will make more Star Wars movies. Consider the franchise dead.

Yup they should pack it up, apparently it doesn't print money like it used to. Consider this another Waterworld... lol.

Maybe I've outgrown Star Wars, which I loved as a kid. I had no interest in Force Awakens. Same for Rogue One.

Finally saw FA on DVD and agree with those who thought it was a pale remake of New Hope.

Yeah, I was hoping that they'd take it into a new focus/direction, but it was too much like IV (really lazy screenwriting), and a lot of the wonder was lost (because, ya know, I've seen IV a number of times, like many fans). A few irritating missteps (worthy of ED-209 itself) also added to my aggravation.
I have tix tomorrow night to see Rogue One w/my cousin for his b-day, but my expectations are fairly low. Hopefully it's a lot better.
FA = 6/10 (honestly, should be lower, but good production values and fun staged fights. Also, don't discount the Star Wars nostalgia bug)
Rogue One = ???? (to be seen)

Just got back from watching it. Damn good movie. Very excellent.

Really? You might check out gay porn. Dudes are always front and center in those. It's not a feminist film. Not every story has a strong male hero, some things do deviate from that wet dream. I like the change of scenery in films where it's not the stereotypical white buff dude kicking the asses of some other big buff dude and getting all sweaty and dirty while their clothes fall off. Give me Felicity Jones or Daisy Ridley any day of the week.

No spoilers but this is what I wanted to see as part of the prequels. The last few minutes were just amazingly perfect.

What is the deal with the comparisons from the "alt-right", etc..? It's the same story line from 1977. Why are there people comparing it to modern politics? (serious question).

I stopped reading when they said Attack of the Clones was one of the top two Star Wars movies.

"the best of George Lucas’s “Star Wars” entries (“Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”)"

Didn't read the article (haven't seen the movie yet), but this is a joke right?

Bingo. This reviewer can't be trusted.

Gay porn? Why aren't feminists blasting the gay porn industry for not having enough female roles in them?

Rogue One is pretty much a feministic film (from my observation), as with The Force Awakens (heroine lives in a desert planet, and can fly the Millennium Falcon without being in one ever?!? Was the flight controls designed by Apple?). The main hero easily could have been an asian guy, or a guy with a native American background, that would be very refreshing, instead.. we get the same cookie cutter white badass fit female kicking everyone's butt. Why not give her slow reflexes and a sense of humor + butch blue haircut along with some muscles and tattoos?

It's cool that you and many others like the movie, I just don't get these new movies. Also you have one awesome username, not kidding, I chuckle each time I see "Ur_Mom likes this", never gets old hahaha :D

It probably helps to draw more women into movie theaters regardless if they're a feminist or not. Race doesn't matter but they're still marketing most big blockbuster films toward white audiences due to higher ticket sales. In 20 or 30 years that might change.

You do know that women have legs and can walk out of the kitchen, right? Stop being butthurt that they don't cast you as the hero.

Being one of the kids from the 70s that grew up with Star Wars I walked out of the Disney hack last year.

R.I.P Star Wars

The director of “Rogue One,” Gareth Edwards, has stepped into a mythopoetic stew so half-baked and overcooked, a morass of pre-instantly overanalyzed implications of such shuddering impact to the series’ fundamentalists, that he lumbers through, seemingly stunned or constrained or cautious to the vanishing point of passivity, and lets neither the characters nor the formidable cast of actors nor even the special effects, of which he has previously proved himself to be a master, come anywhere close to life.

Think that is the longest sentence ever... Reads like someone that wants to hear himself say buzz words to feel better...

Finally saw it last night. Thought it was good, much better than those Ewok movies.

So glad Donnie wasn't a Jedi. Thought for sure he would be and it was nice to see Jedi nonexistent in this movie.

Also cgi Cushing was better than I thought it would be. Tech has come a long way since Terminator Salvation.

Is it Opposite Day because I've heard nothing but good things about it?

"the best of George Lucas’s "Star Wars" entries ("Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith")."

That right there I think is sufficient. I think the reviewer is just trying to gin up internet hate and the accompanying clicks.

I saw episode IV in theaters when I was 7 and I have watched all the films a number of times. IV and V where the best and most of VI was good until you got to the Ewoks.

The majority of I-III were crap to me. the best thing that has happened to Star Wars IMO is getting rid of George Lucas. He started off great and then went downhill quick.

I enjoyed the force Awakens much more than I-III and I'm sure I'll enjoy Rogue One and others similarly.

George Lucas was also partly responsible for that awesome 80s hit Howard the Duck...................

I liked it, more than I liked TFA. The absence of all the jedi/sith/light-side/dark-side stuff gives this movie a different feel, which I liked.

Regarding the CGI characters, I honestly did not even notice one of them. I thought to myself, "Wait, wasn't this guy in the original SW film?", but I just didn't realize what they had done. Considering they can do this now, I'm surprised they couldn't enhance Darth Vader's voice to sound a little less like old James Earl Jones.
Wow, really? I cringed every time CGI Cushing was on screen. Completely took me out of the experience. It's a good thing CGI Fisher was only on the screen for a few seconds at the very end because she was even worse.

I think the author of the review should stick to reviewing movies about transgenders and oppressed feminists. I don't think he can identify with traditional male/female role models and things like duty and honor. Heroism is an out-modded concept that perpetrates negative stereotypes.

Besides Trump likes the movie and the Russians hacked the computers of the scriptwriters. That alone should dissuade people from supporting the movie...

Ep7 was an extremely high production and well executed remake of Ep4. I liked it but it was still a tit for tat remake. Kylo was pretty stiff but still way better than 95% of the prequel acting.

Ep1 George Lucas just shit all over the mystique and mystery surrounding the Force and the Jedi.
Ep2&3 OMG Jedi battles! Finally! Too bad the story was awful (NOOOOOOOOO) and could such great actors have been used any worse? (Anakin Lucas, you're breaking my heart)

As to Rogue One, the lack of crawl surprised me but maybe only official EPISODES get them? Tarkin was juuuuusst on the edge of the uncanny valley; it bothered me a bit at first but I must have gotten used to it. As others here have said, we're inches away from completely convincing CGI realism now. This is most certainly the most WAR of any Star Wars movie. The final battle was certainly the most intense and realistic (well, considering it still is Star Wars) fight yet in a SW movie.

I saw the movie on Friday and thoroughly enjoyed it. If others do not like it, that is on them and I could not care less. I recommend for those that want to see it, do not hesitate, go and enjoy.

spoiler alert: there's going to be a sequel(s)! December will never be the same. There will be a new Star Wars movie every time around Christmas for the next 3-5 years at least.

Uh. There's already BEEN a sequel. It's called "Star Wars" (or more colloquially "Star Wars Episode III: A New Hope").

Ep7 was good. A new Death Star, but a planet? The Death Star worked. So good, they rebuilt it for Return of the Jedi. It caused a ton of fear and was bad ass. I expected it to return. Kylo... I'm hoping there is more to him in the next couple episodes. There is something missing from his backstory.

Episode 1 was a great movie. It was a shit Star Wars movie. It was like a knock-off Star Wars movie. As far as the actors in 2 & 3 - agree to a point. I don't like Hayden Christensen. However, I really don't think there would be any actor that could pull off those cringe worthy lines to make them sound good.

I thought Cushing was decent. I asked my 12 year old what he thought of him, which he looked at me weirdly for asking, but he wasn't aware that the character was CGI.

But yeah, Leia wasn't great. Her model looked like it was ripped straight out of Battlefront.
Probably would've been better to keep the character facing away the camera and cut away just as she begins to turn around to receive the plans.

Umm, did you watch the movie? Cause it was none of those things.

Jyn was much more realistic in that regard and not like Rey "I can do everything" from TFA. The other people in the group all brought their own skills and aiblities to the group dynamic and werent' there to be useless

Interesting point and that is another similarity between TFA and Episode IV and maybe deliberate (not suggesting they are story-line related); Luke Skywalker in the 1st film was also like "I can do everything".
Cheers

I got to post this (saw it ages ago) but I think most may had scene this comic parody vid, even the music fits perfectly :)

There are a few other good ones out there, but to me this is pretty classic.
Enjoy :)

Cept he wasn't.

Did Luke know how to use Jedi mind tricks? No, Obi Wan did. Did he know how to fight with a light saber? Nope.

The ONLY thing Luke could do well was fly, and it was EXPLAINED multiple times in the movie, not only by him, but other characters (including Obi wan) that Luke was a GREAT pilot like his dad and that he flew the T16 (which is the ship that they use to train x-wing pilots with) and he constantly flew and practiced fighting (IE his comment about the womp rats and bullseyeing them).

Meanwhile Rey? She can use ANY force powers whenever she needs them, even blocking a TRAINED jedi from using his mind trick and reversing it back onto him. She had 0 training or help from anyone and pulls off these advanced Jedi moves out of thin air.

Remember in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke goes to find Yoda and how much Luke STRUGGLES just trying to learn to lift a small rock? Then how he lost the fight to Vader (costing him a hand in the process), he couldn't magically do EVERYTHING and wasn't good at everything right when he needed to.

Also she can fly, fly the falcon which she never flew before. How? It's never explained within the movie at all, she just "does it" out of thin air.

However in some book released outside the movie they tried to explain it by her flying "simulation" things on a headset or something, though like most people, you probably never read it and thus most people don't know that information, the movie shouldn't need a book to expand on an already weak character, that's what the film should do.

Terminator Genysis and the new Mad Max were pretty bad. The Force Awakens wasn't too good either- Rey would have been alright if she were not an expert at everything. Rogue One is a good movie though and the female character in Rogue One is pretty good.

I think everyone is missing the point with Rey, at least the way I took it. I think they deliberately made her do everything to show just how powerful, or force sensitive she is. Her background is yet to be revealed, but I get the feeling she is a step above anyone we've seen before.
