HTC Vive Owners Thread

Posted this over in VCards...

I'm setting up a new SFF build for VR..Vive.. and I'm torn between a 1080 and 1070. The 1070 will save me money but am I going to be happy with it in the long run?

What say you Gods of VR?
Agreed. Put most cash of build to GPU. Depending on how soon you need it I might even wait for the new Nvidia GPU suggested to release next month. That's what I'm going for as I don't want to pay for a Titan XP.

I would get the 1080 if you can afford it. I'm glad I did over a 1070 (I've used a Vive on both).

Anyone have Arizona sunshine yet? Looking for a first look from someone on the board.
Tried it out for about 20 minutes before I had to leave. Graphics look great! Although I can't max it out with a 1070, but I see why. Real-time bullet damage works well as you can see flesh flying off zombies where you shoot them. Has co-op and a horde mode I haven't tried yet. 1st person narration is very comical. I thought I would have been tired of zombie games by now, but this one feels like a new twist.

First game out of Vive Studios...looks decent, but maybe a bit pricey:

Also works on Oculus. Glad to see that so far Vive isn't falling into the Rift's exclusivity bullshit.

A while back I bought a set of prescription lenses for the Vive from these guys. http://vr-lens-lab.com/ ..
I have had them for a month or better and had not tried them until today. (Similar is available from other vendors for less at this time.)
In any case, they install easy and work great. I have a prescription of -3.75 for both eyes and had to wear glasses with the Vive, which was somewhat uncomfortable to me. Especially after installing one of the more plush face cushions. Now it is a lot better.

There is a couple issues though. If you share the headset with others, you will have to pop them in and out. Also, pupil distance, and where the headset sits on your head is a lot more important than it was if you want the lenses to be at the right angle and distance for clearest vision.
Now, just waiting on full wireless to make this a lot better.

It is derpy, but sometimes I become aware of the headset cable, and actively try to avoid "cutting" it with my light blade in Light Blade VR. So I really "need" wireless.

what's everyone playing right now? I'm getting bored with my Vive already... not a fan of the wave shooters - space pirate, raw data, etc. i had fun with vanishing realms but that quickly faded. really like island 359 but again, gets redundantly quickly. found the most replayability in onward - which is probably my favorite to date. would love for fallout 4 to arrive.... should i try vorpx or whatever it is with another game? any other recommendations?

Part of my low play time is that I have to currently drag my main rig into the Vive room on the other side of my house to play. So it's either play regular games or play Vive games, but not both unless I want to drag the PC back and forth.

I still fire it up every week or so but there hasn't been a ton of compelling content coming out recently (other than H3VR stuff and Doom 3 which I haven't tried yet) so my motivation is low right now.

I'm in the same boat as you Maverick as I have to drag my PC back and forth from living room. So it's either BF1 or the VIve. I usually take 2 weeks or so breaks from the Vive until new games release. Taking those breaks gives the WOW factor when coming back to the Vive.

wadec22, I'm enjoying Arizona Sunshine right now. It's a great game, especially with friends. If your tired of shooter, try out Call of Starseed or Chair in a Room if you haven't already. There are some great cockpit games also for a totally different experience.

I've also been waiting for the Steam Winter sale to buy more VR games. Some of the Autumn sale deals were...okay, but I'm holding out for better. :p

I appreciate the input here. I should have probably asked more questions to folks around here. I did read up on the space requirements and specs before diving into this and it looked like my bedroom office works perfectly. I've got about a 6.5'x7' space in my office in the middle of all of my stuff and the base stations can be placed within the 16' requirement with no problem. Do you do guys think a 6.5'x7' area would work well?

It's supposed to start next Thursday from what I've read. I've picked up a few titles already in advance. Serious Sam, Arizona Sunshine, Fruit Ninja, Call of Starseed. Wanted to pick up Google Tilt Brush and a few other things. Any ideas? Thanks!

It will work, but with room-scale bigger is better. I have about 20'x15'. The more you can walk around in the VR space the better for most games.

How does that work though when the base stations are not supposed to be more then 16' apart? Even in my planed space I can't put the base stations in exact corners and keep then within 16ft'. Please, don't take me as being a troll or nag, I'm simply looking for experienced input. Thanks again!

Not at all, a valid question. I do get a warning from SteamVR about the lighthouse sensors being to far apart, but I have never had a problem with tracking and I have had the Vive for 8 months or so. These guys actually placed the sensors 27' apart a long time ago and still no problems with tracking. The LH sensors are some great tech.

Thanks again, I was very much wondering about that spec and how strict it was.

Don't they usually have a good Christmas sale?

Yeah, I guess that is the one I am referring to. Supposed to start around the 22nd or 23rd as heatlesssun said.

Well, that is ~2m by ~2.1m, which should work okay for most games. Some games have a minimum space requirement, or in the case of stuff like Hover Junkers (which I hear is a fairly dead game anyway so...maybe don't base your decision on that one) you can only use certain ships depending on your room space.

Like Swolern said, the bigger the better, but you should be able to have a good experience with that much space.

My current room is around 10' by 12' but there is some stuff in the way so it's more like 9' by 10' or so.

I just bought Climby, and it's pretty good. Though I am still getting use to the controls I do like it. I was actually surprised that it's not affecting me motion sickness wise.

Many great games. Backlog is about to fill up!!

Does Steam do those highlight 24hr deals with games extremely discounted(@80% off) or did they stop that?

Nope, they stopped that about a year or two ago I think. The prices now will be the same as they will be on the last day, so no rush to buy.

Well that sucks. I guess Valve is making too much money to need those extra incentives.

I have to say, wow. Never had tried a Rift or Vive before, I played with Samsung Gear VR before at a Best Buy, cool but not impressive. I should have done this a long time ago. Picked up around $200 worth of VR titles. The one thing that just kind of blew my mind is the air hockey game in SportsBar VR. It really feels like playing air hockey, showed that to my wife and she got a big kick out of it too.

The Vive stole the show at our In-Laws Christmas Day party. Kids and adults all had a blast on it, esp Zombie Trainer. Wife had reservations at first with the purchase but not anymore. Can't wait for more games to come out and got a few steam bucks to help out with that.

Just 5 minutes with Google Earth VR will easily convince you the Vive purchase was justified... :D

I must have missed something with this.. I saw this, thought it was neat, but after about 15 minutes I was done. Was neat to street view the house I grew up in and zoom around, but outside of that and some of the tours? Meh. Uninstalled.

Was there something I missed?

Anyone tried Vermintide VR? It was way blurry on me, I changed some settings based on what I found online, and was still blurry.

I keep going back to Island 359, and Raw Data. Recently picked up Arizona Sunshine which is cool. Looks like Raw Data did a big update to their game, and noticed a huge bump in graphics quality.

Anyone have any suggestions for a full game like the Labs Sling Shot mini game?

Does Arizona Sunshine have ~$30 worth of content? I am leery of spending over $20 for a VR title these days given the overall quality of many.

I haven't finished Arizona Sunshine, so far it seems good and I don't feel cheated at all after paying $30. It feels better put together than most wave shooter games out now, but campaign mode does seem to have a pattern so far, teleport around, search for ammo/weapons as you make your way around, maybe find/have to look for a key to open a door to get to the next zone, and somewhere before exiting to the next area trigger a zombie horde, survive it then move to the next area. I am in a pitch black dark area now and it's pretty creepy going around with a flashlight. It's relatively linear so far. There is the campaign mode and it has a a couple of difficulty levels and also a horde mode that I haven't tried out but it's probably more of a direct wave shooter like mode.
