DDR4 3866 on an 6700k?

hi!

MoBo is a GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 which has support for the G.skil F4-3866C18Q-16GTZ running at 3866. The proc arck sheet over at Intel says the proc runs (default) at 2133 max.

to this means says I would need to OC the proc memory controller to get the standard proformace out of the memory. Yes?
 
Set the memory speed etc or use XMP, voila.
You may have to enable the "odd" speed setting in the bios to allow certain frequencies to be used.

Most ram are 2133MHz chips, binned to find the higher performance ones and sold as such.
When not running an XMP profile, they default to 2133MHz.

It can be awkward running memory at the edge of rated specs for the mobo, you might not quite get it running at rated speed.
Its not necessarily a fault of the ram, the mobo can limit as well.
Fortunately you have a good pedigree mobo so theres a good chance.
Over volting might fix it and there are plenty of other tweaks to get the edge.

I'm running the Z170 Maximus Hero.
My LPX 4x4GB 3000MHz refused to run at even rated speed on 2 lower spec MSI and ASrock Z170 boards, I almost returned it.
On the Hero I have it clocked to 3600MHz with 1.4V and can push it harder.
With more voltage it will do 3733MHz.

But because there is practically no benefit running ram that fast I settled on the easy 3600MHz.
Unless you have a particular reason to need ram that fast, dont waste money on it.
Around 3200MHz gets you all you could ask for on a gaming PC.

yes enabling xmp for any ram over 2133 does oc the memory controller on the cpu

Good luck. I'm running 3733 Gskills w/o a problem, but it is still down to luck of the draw. Btw, check reviews of your board, a big part of equation is the motherboard. And w/o knowing what either half can do before just makes it that much more of a pain. That's why I went with Asus personally.

the ram I quoted was specific on the memory list as supported. so if the board will not do it.. I RMA it. however... I will likely take the advise Nenu said and not go above 3200.

Why would you not even bother to try? Why pay more for the speed and not use it? Just get lower speed sticks. As I said before, there's two parts to the equation. The cpu's imc and the mb. Also, a third is the memory itself though I suspect it shouldn't be a problem with the gskills as I run a similar speed but you never know.
 
Anything over DDR4 2400 is pointless on Z170, all the memory bandwidth in the world doesn't make a difference when you're trying to squeeze it through the same locked 100 MHz base bus that Z170 has to work with. It was the same story since Sandy Bridge, only the HEDT platforms with the adjustible BCLK straps will benefit from anything over DDR4 2400.

You should not test the average framerate, you should test the minimum framerate, because that is what is mostly affected by system memory speed. In CPU-bound scenarios you can often get 5-10 more FPS with faster memory, which is significant.

Agreed. Plenty of others have done this and the benefits are always shown to be significant. No disrespect intended, but these tests tell us almost nothing about the benefits of faster RAM for fairly obvious reasons.

Yes I read the comments and I politely disagree. You would be better off running tighter timings at a lower speed than speeds that are significantly higher than the bus can saturate.

You're welcome to show me some actual graphs of someone doing a 'minimum FPS' comparison to prove me wrong.

memory speeds over a certain point give diminishing returns. no point in having a Ferrari if you only have dirt roads to drive it on.
