2 Days to Go!

Too bad they didn't raffle off in-person tickets - would have been neat to go in person if it's down at their Austin offices regardless of the outcome.

Well I signed up for their live stream. Let's hope there's some substance to it and not all PR marketing bs.

Quite odd that you would have to sign up for their stream , does AMD not want to reach as many people as possible ?

There 2 things that would be nice to know clock speeds and somewhat more about AM4 X370 .

And to hopefully see some Asus, MSI, etc motherboards with some specs would be great.

So based on what I just read, the official chips will be called Ryzen ( pronounced risen, cute AMD), and we'll have clocks comprable to Intel. Also, they have a feature that allows them to Auto overclock out of the box without any user intervention whatsoever.

The more I am reading up on the lights, the more bananas this sounds but it also correlates with previous leaks and rumors I've heard from other sources which gives it credibility to me.

As always, I think we will have to wait until it's actually been too, however, given Kyle's plea to AMD in his Intel preview, I think he knows exactly that AMD is going to be looking really good after release and positioned himself quite well in that article to come out looking like a genius with that play.

I don't think Kyle makes that comment if he didn't know Ryzen was going to deliver.

I think 2017 may finally be the year where enthusiast technology finally gets pushed forward.

If those architecture changes are real and actually work I think Intel might be in a real bad spot considering their chips all look to be the same for the next few years.

That auto overclock might be not as flexible , AMD explained on several of their products before (gfx and cpu) if the cpu stays cool it will ramp up until thermal limits are reached it will do this based on current workload and cpu cores used.

Single core usage will be able to "burst" much more and often as the thermal limits would not be reached as fast as you would do with multiple cores. That is why they involve the cooling method used in the story.

In other Turbo boost on steroids and much more useful if it is smart.

Guys, I'm losing my shit right now waiting for AMD zen. Should I grab the Skylake 6700k and enjoy the next month and a half playing buttery smooth overwatch and BF1? Or should I suck up my pride and wait it out for the AMD offering?

Also, I'd like to spend $500-$600 tops on this bad boy.. I think that the AMD zen puts me out of that budget when compared against a microcenter $270 skylake, then a $70 mobo (after $30 discount), and then plugging in some $80 worth of ram.

What say the hive here folks? Am I going to miss out of the lightning greatness or whatever man just build your skylake and have fun.

Currently sitting on 2011's Intel Core I5 and it's finally dying in games.

At this point, you're a month out. Why even ask? Wait the month and see how it pans out, then make your decision. I actually wanted to wait until Zen, but my PC died on me about a year ago, and I didn't have a choice.

I'd wait it out dude and see how it performs. It may even push Intel CPU prices down. I almost regret jumping on the 6700K now.

AMD has always offered better bang for your buck and better upgrade path than Intel as they tend to stick with a socket for a long time. In terms of performance they were always a bit behind Intel but this should surely close that gap.

AM4 will also unite APU and CPUs which I find very intriguing. I might pick one up stick an APU in it use it as a HTPC and later upgrade to a CPU to replace my FX-8350 a few years down the road.

I'm pretty sure there 8 core won't be cheap but I'm also pretty sure it won't be 5960X prices either.

Right now is a bad time to pick up a 6700k; for one with the 7700k coming out it will probably drop in price, secondly Zen might be worth waiting for.

Suck it up, your junk is newer than mine :p

I'm running into mobo issues, X58 mobos are stupid expensive right now, so I'm hoping for Zen :)

I would not read that much into my comments.

Is this going to outperform my 4790k in games...I hope so (y)
Looking at Watch Dogs 2 CPU utilization leads one to think 2017 will be a 6 core, multithreaded PC gaming one, or let's hope so. Some would say the game is poorly optimized.

3.2Ghz base, 3.5Ghz single core turbo for the top bin seems confirmed.

And AM4 board with PCI slots? Quite an I/O barren board.

Im using a fx-8320e (stock clocks) with a r9 390 -- even while mining, overwatch is butter smooth on ultra. You should be fine for another month unless you have something else going on in the background causing your issue.

Since no branding is visible on that board it may just be a random stock image they grabbed

Quite odd that you would have to sign up for their stream , does AMD not want to reach as many people as possible ?

This is the age of data mining! If they can make an extra 2 million on data why not i guess.

For the sake of all of us PC nerds, let's all pray that AMD got their shit together with Zen. The market needs some competition for once. The 5-10% performance bumps that Intel has been doing for years now is getting old.

You are not going to get bigger bumps no matter what happens. The only possible thing you can get is more cores and/or cheaper prices that will limit R&D in a race to the bottom.

I got an email saying I could get a bigger bump in 1 week.

No mention of cores tho..

That's actually part of what I'm talking about. I don't expect massive IPC increases anymore either. More cores and cheaper prices per core would also go a long way. If more people had realistic access to more than 4 cores, we'd likely see more software that is able to take advantage of all the new threads. If that's how we have to get our performance increases in the future, that's fine by me.

More idle cores? ;)

There is a reason for why the core count race quickly died.

Hence the part of my comment about maybe we'd see new, multi-threaded apps (ie games) that could take advantage of having the cores rather than have them sit idle or do next to nothing.

Its already there. Its not going to magically fix itself in a year or 2 or maybe even 5 or 10 years. The biggest problem is the diminishing returns.

OMG why do you still try to argue. Go to the intel forum or something. Just wait and see what we get before you go on your Anti AMD tirade, seriously.

R&D market share, steam surveys, Jon Peddie, thats all that matters right now. Don't even need to see the announcement to know its going to be slower than Bulldozer clock for clock. /sarc

Lets wait and see for crying out loud.

The core count race has yet to begin. Software is catching up slowly, eventually it will be their.

Would it be fair to hope for 70% of Kaby Lake performance at half the price? Or is that asking for a lot out of AMD? Sincerely asking as I'm not even sure where AMD stands anymore by comparison to Intel.
