Tesla Settles Norway Lawsuit Over Car's Performance

It looks as though Tesla has settled that lawsuit in Norway where owners were upset that their vehicles only produced 469 horsepower, not the claimed 700 horsepower. Tesla is paying each of the 120+ owners about $7,700.

Kaspar Nygaard Thommessen of Oslo-based law firm Wikborg Rein, who represented the car owners, told Reuters a settlement had been reached in recent days and the case had been resolved. Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv (DN) said on Sunday Tesla had agreed to pay 65,000 Norwegian crowns ($7,700) to each car owner, about half of what they demanded, or allow them to choose from alternative options, including car upgrades.
 
Too lazy to research... anyone know off hand how they measured that? Manf. advertise crank HP, not wheel HP, and there will always be considerable frictional losses and a lower number on the dyno.

Edit: I'm literally retarded... My brain saw a ~30hp loss, not 230hp loss... fail! I would be royally pissed at Tesla, and demand they buy the vehicle back.

Problem is that it wasn't ever measured, at least in a quantifiable and repeatable way. There isn't a huge traditional drivetrain with the same level of losses like you'd normally see in an ICE vehicle, and the only explanation from Tesla is that they had added the hp from the two motors but the catch was that both motors never actually run at maximum power at the same time so it could never hit the advertised hp.

If it dynos 469, and they advertise 700, that seems very fair to me. *shrugs*
The way I heard it described was that the ratings for the front and rear motors combined add up to 700 hp, but the electronics and wiring are unable to feed enough electricity to max out both motors at the same time.

Yeah, it'd be like an ICE manufacturer claiming their 1 cylider engine can get 100hp, so their 8cyl could get 800... although the fuel pump isn't capable of actually pushing enough fuel to all 8 cylinders at once to ever hit those numbers. It really is a case of false advertising. At least with the hypothetical ICE engine I just mentioned, you could possibly upgrade the pump and lines to deal with it.
 
This sort of thing happens from time to time. The last one I remember was Mazda rx-8 horsepower numbers were way off and Mazda had to buy back the cars of people that were complaining.

Tesla is probably going to be motor output, however there is no drive train like a normal car, no large transmission, driveshaft and diff, the motors are connected to the driving wheels, so loss is actually very small to a normal car, and defiantly not 231HP loss. It would have to be the worst drivetain in history and would run hot as hell from dissipating 231HP in friction losses.

Tesla adding the power output of the motors would have been fine to come up with their 700hp rating for the vehicle, if the motors were actually capable of running like that.
 
Heh, that $7,770 should make up for all those heads-up races against Ferrari's ... or not. :D

How the hell do you lose 230HP ?

Similar to "8-Core CPU = 8 times faster computer" BS. Marketing guidelines vary by geography, different places have different standards and norms when it comes to "truth in advertising" so what's ok here may be deceptive advertising elsewhere and vice versa.

Except 8 cores can be very close to 8 times faster in some situations. This car could never hit the stated HP under any situation.

I'm sure there's a way to find some freakish scenario in either case, the point is there's exaggeration in the marketing going on and that kind of claim will run afoul of related laws in some markets. Some places require more clarity, others let it slide with a simple fine print, etc.

Motors are capable - Battery pack is not, My friend is one of those owners who got this settlement and he's burned up some connectors a time or two on the existing battery pack while doing the top speed, it just went into boring mode with less power till the issue was fixed at the dealership.



Salespeople/marketers.
This should be a reminder to them, Never ever falsely advertise in Norway as it's a no win case, Tesla acted like they never could loose this case.
Either elon said to sort it asap or they consulted with some lawyers saying you can't win this case.


One of the owners had a 450 hp car, sold it and bought the Tesla P85D and he couldn't beat his old car with his Tesla.
Pretty good warning sign that the Tesla does not have 700+ hp :)
Still crazy in 0-100kmh, no doubt!
