I suck at MP-FPS games.

And it pisses me off. I watch all these videos of people scoring headshot after headshot, yet when I playing I can barely get a bullet off without loading right to a death cam. Doesn't matter the game either. From my TFC days to Titanfall 2 now; I've always been completely garbage. Guaranteed, any FPS game I play I'm last place for kills/score. Every. Time. My current KDR in Titanfall 2 is .2. I'll go hours with only one kill. And I have no idea why. I watch this the death-cam replays and these guys are on point with the crosshairs with every shot. I see a target and I'm wallowing all around trying to land a shot.

And that is my rant of the day. I'm going to the shop to go weld something.

Try using shotguns in close quarters. At least you do not need to aim with those :) I am terrible with aiming so shotgun helps.

With shotgun you need to be close and personal.

you might also consider playing games with support roles who gets more points then those who kills. Like Rainbow Six Siege for example.

Try Call of Duty IW and get very pissed off unless you slide into people with a shotgun using a controller :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::bag:

Some of these people play the game everday and know the map inside out

also could be your ping if your internet is slow you have perma death lag.

I had that big time in Call of Duty Ghosts playing on 156k

Welding ... that is my kind of fun.

Now sure which games you play besides the two mentioned. In FPS games where reaction time & accuracy are important a few things can make all the difference.

A good mouse and mouse pad.

Frame rates & render times. Many times you are better off turning down the eye candy unless you have a top tier system.

Ping. High pings can kill when milliseconds matter.

I'm the same way. If I focus on a game and practice I can usually do OK, but if I pick up something new, it'll struggle to get even like a 1:2 K:D ratio. You'd think the skills would at least be somewhat transferable, but for me they aren't. With MW Remastered I was able to jump and do excellent despite not playing that game (or really any COD) in 10 years, but I suck ass every time I fire up Titanfall 2.

Titanfall 2 is incredibly fast, and there is a lot of practice involved in mastering the wall running shit. I just don't have the time nor the inclination to devote to it to "git gud", as it were.

This is mainly why I've avoided buying most MP-focused FPS games in recent years. What's sad is that real SP experiences have been falling by the wayside.

Do you adjust your sensitivity settings? If you're all over the place trying to zero in on your target, you may need to turn down your sensitivity. Maybe look at your playstyle and see if that doesn't agree with your skillset. I have to turn down my sensitivity on all FPS games whether it's on console or PC and I'm a shit sniper that has trouble tracking targets that are up close. This makes me play medium range almost exclusively.

It also forces me to be cognizant of how I chose my encounters and use the map to my advantage. Retreat and break line of sight of I'm caught out of position to someone rushing me or stay out of sniper lanes and use alternate flanking routes. It also helps to record your gameplay to see what bad habits you have and what you need to do to fix them. Watch gameplay of games you know you did terrible in because those are going to put your bad habits on display.

You don't have to spend a lot of time on it, but 30 minutes or an hour looking at your gameplay and picking apart your bad habits can really help. Also, team fire. Find one or two other people and follow them, let them start the engagement, you may only get an assist or you're mopping up kills, but 2v1 or 3v1 is always better than 1v1.

I recommend watching some of the counter-strike videos from FrankyonPC.

getting started in counter-strike

Better aim in any game

Regardless of how some may feel about Franky even as a counter-strike player of 15 years I was impressed with these two. While these primarily talk about counter-strike, if you "git gud" at counters-strike that skill will help with any FPS. Some games come with the ability to use a "training arena" battlefield 4 has this. This allows you to spend quiet time adjusting your sensitivity and buttons.

I was taught CS by a former pro who told me the first thing you need to do in any FPS game is immediately lower your sensitivity as far as it will go and then play for a bit at a time slowly raising it until you feel comfortable. Sadly you need to do this for every game. Recoil and spray doesn't work the same way in CS, CSGO, COD, BF or any of the others. You need to do this twice for any game utilizing sniper rifles.

Also never play with the easiest to manage gun. Challenge yourself. It will help.

Get a good responsive mouse, I use a Sensei Raw, I used to use a Razor Deathadder, but lately their products have felt increasingly cheap to me personally.

Also go disable "enhanced pointer precision" This may solve all your problems in one fell swoop.

Take it more slow, watch your corners, try to anticipate where people will be. In alot of the more twitchy games like COD, half the battle is shooting first. And there is no substitute for knowing the maps. If you know the maps you can guard an area you will know people will be going. Honestly a lot of the K/D whores you see in some pub lobbies are just very good at camping it up.

Try practicing with bots on easy mode if the game has them. Use a shotgun or a sniper rifle or some single fire rifle/weapon, as these guns will generally help you hone your aim since they require more accuracy.

I'll start off with reducing the mouse sensitivity. See how that goes.

And, I am nearing 40 so I'm thinking that may not be helping either. haha

As for the mouse, I've got an Anker wired mouse. Not sure the exact model or whatever. I had to go wired because my wireless mouse was skipping beats due to my wireless router. Took about a month to figure out why suddenly my mouse would just halt in place for a second at a time.

The Frankie video helped. I'll dub with it a little more.

It may just be that fast-paced FPS games are not your thing. Your comment about how this is always how it's been for you sort of reinforces that. There is nothing wrong with that...I used to pay a shit-ton of Action! Quake 2, Unreal Tournament and Counter-Strike way back in the day, but nowadays I try to pay CS:GO and get my ass handed to me over and over. Then again, back in the day I was a high school student and had plenty of time to play games with little else responsibility-wise. Seems to be the same nowadays, where the majority of the players dominating these games are kids with a ton of free time.

I don't see the point in trying to force yourself to like games that just don't work for you. Seems like that just generates frustration when the goal of a game is entertainment.

mmk. Played for another hour. Turned the sensitivity down by half. Didn't feel like it helped. Tried the shotgun. Got my ass handed to me. I'm dead before I can get in range. Though, I did surprise myself; played a round and went 2nd overall. No idea what happened there, but is that how everyone feels all the time? But then, sure as shit the next round I'm dead last again with zero kills. haha

I'm kind of in a lull right now. Been grinding away in World of Warcraft for 12 years off and on. Its been getting pretty lame right now and I'm looking for a switch. Season 8 of D3 is over in a month so I'm late there. Went to try an MP-FPS and ended up right where I am now. Iunno, perhaps I'll finish up Black Mesa and play through HL2 again. I just need a switch of genres for now.

Do a quick accuracy test; I favor this one:

http://aim400kg.com/ea/

I once tried using a wireless mouse, the Logitech Marathon m705, which was supposed to be good, but it had me shooting like a Star Wars Storntrooper. I ran that accuracy test, and it became extremely apparent that the mouse was not tracking where I was aiming. Went back to a wired mouse and my aim went back to its normal level of "terrible no good sucks to be 40+" and the m705 went into the trash. Since your mouse is wired, you're probably not having that trouble, but it's worth checking to make sure some mouse straight line tracking algorithm isn't mucking about with your aim.

start camping with sniper rifles :D

but seriously just practice...the more you do something the better you will get

I know this sounds bizarre or even unfair, but thats not enough. These days you really have to be patient and put your back into it to be good at FPS, imagine taking all the time you've grinded in WoW, you have to put that much effort in to succeed at most modern FPS. If you want a positive kill rate on even COD you gotta put in the same amount of effort you do in WoW, you can't just dick around with sensitivity. You have to step by step train yourself to be a good FPS player. play for a day at 800 dpi and so on.

I'm also one of those who suck at FPS. I can't seem to aim for shit. It's either my sensitivity, my 60hz screen or me just being plain bad, or all three combined.
But I compensane that since I'm great at being unpredictable and ambushing people, that's anyway much more fun :D

Ticrate matters a lot, too. Titanfall 2 has a 20 ticrate, which is extremely low. That is probably not helping the OP.

That's pretty shitty, right?
I think your accuracy (70%) is above average, but your reaction time stinks. Try to get faster without losing accuracy. I would aim for an "aiming" time of half a second or less.

Bah. I say let the dice do the talking when it comes to FPS skill.

Seriously, though. Try to play different games and you'll get better. Skip low skill games such as BF/CoD and jump into Quake/UT. Different games force into thinking outside of the box (your own box). Avoid "realistic" if you want to retain any skill. Sounds trolling but it's the truth.

Play something like Overwatch where you get rewarded for playing as a team vs. just getting headshots. Healing the team with Mercy, spreading chaos with Junkrat or just being a wall with Reinhardt. There is something for everyone and all is needed to be successful. Kills mean nothing since giving even minimal damage to an enemy can still net you a kill. You get a kill for healing a teammate who kills someone.

You most likely have bad mouse settings. I made a guide for people like you. A lot of people find it useful.
http://eliteownage.com/mouseguide.html

Follow your teammates. Rushing in alone is an easy way to get killed in just about any MP FPS. When you get a sense of map control, cover, spawns, etc, then these games will be (relatively) less frustrating.

for games like CS:GO it takes a bit of configuration to make all the aiming perfect. Almost every top level player has custom mouse settings/cross-hair suited to their style. If you try playing CS:Go with all stock settings and stock cross-hair, its not going to be that great. Also for that game, a lower sensitivity is recommended as its less of a twitch shooter like overwatch/quake and more of a skill based. Its really hard for me to give tips as ive been playing CS for 12 years now, started when i was 14 and now im 27, so i have a slight advantage over newcomers but at the same time i dont feel like my aim has gotten any worse over time. If i take a month or two off from the game im going to be bad at first, but its like riding a bike for me and after im warmed up it all comes back. I think it just takes a lot of practice, and not to dog your age, but around 27-28 is when most pro players stop playing because their hand-eye coordination starts to decline. Its all muscle memory really once you've played it for a long time

Tips:

*aim for center mass body
*shoot in short bursts or semi auto at a distance
*always keep your cross hairs where you think an opponent center mass will be coming around corners or hills
*when sniping don't just stand and aim, move and aim at same time
*when u start getting shot at, zig/zah, prone, sprint, hop, etc to cover
*FLANKING ENEMY WILL IMPROVE YOUR KD DRAMATICALLY
*get a gaming mouse where you can adjust dpi between guns/stationary guns/vehicles on the fly
*144hz monitor helps
*different guns require different play styles. SmG's and shotguns sprint and rarely use aim down site
*rifles are better used in semi auto most of the time
*fire LMGS in bursts
*try to put yourself in your opponents shoes and do what he would least expect

Heh. I just tried that test and I got -20K. Yes, that's a negative score. Being 50 and using a trackball will do that for you.

Im turning 35. Been playing FPS since 486 days -- I use to always top the charts, and im not even a good shot -- now i struggle to get middle of the pack. Either im getting worse, or everyone is getting better. You do need to think about your routes / patterns. When you run down a hall, try to keep cover while aiming where you expect a conflict to be. If you run past a crate, pillar, etc move over so that it covers your back side -- just think about being a small target , avoid wide open areas. Height advantages cover most of your body while exposing your enemies entire body.

If you know you suck at aiming, avoid areas that exploit that weakness. on CS:GO Dust2, i run a route through that map that avoids the long hall ways. I take a p90, and just hussle through the corridors in a loop. All my encounters are 20 yards or less --- typically 7ish. all high traffic, short range stuff. While you hold the trigger down, slowly pull the mouse back to fight the recoil

In BF1 it doesn't help when you're new and playing against ppl with maxed out gear. I suck as well. I've gone from top 5 in score with 3-1 K/D ratio and then the next round where I'm 1-10 K/D ratio

Not trying to be mean or anytihng, but the p90 is kind of a noobish gun and is more of a situational gun in CS:GO, like if you are planning to rush. I can just sit there with a M4/Ak at the right angle and 1-3 tap you before your p90 is even in effective range. People just like it because of the low recoil and high magazine which makes it perfect for spray and pray style. But you are right about pulling down on the gun, almost all the guns follow the same spray pattern which is in the shape of a T. The bullets will go up and then left to right if you dont control your spray pattern, so you kinda picture an upside down T and aim for the chest area.

Also one big thing i noticed a lot of newcomers do in CS is have the crosshair pointed at the ground while moving. Having it point at headshot level all the time helps out immensely when getting into a fire fight and coming out the winner.

The op and myself included suck at aiming, hence an assault rifle, m4 or ak47 isnt ideal for us. I was suggesting a strategy that avoids our aiming weakness. When i wrote my post, i was picturing the death match scenario of dust 2 -- but in an actual game i wouldd enter a high traffic room with a flashbang or two. I made it to gold nova 2 without a team (joining randoms) earlier this year.

I am not speaking on other peoples behalf, but my reflexs, eyesight, etc is just not what it use to be.

... Honestly I'm not sure what that thing's supposed to test... I'm using a G602 which yeah is wireless but I don't think I've had any specific issues with killing people using it. My aim has never been amazing but I've never seriously tried to train it or anything, and many times I got positive K/D while even while playing on German servers in Wolfenstein ET. The problem with that test is this: when the hell are you going to encounter a situation where peoples' heads just keep popping up left and right in a tiny freaking area? My hand was literally just getting fatigued trying to track all those little dots. My wrist area was just hurting. It's just way too unrealistic... I wouldn't call that training for anything except exactly what it is... playing whack a mole with your mouse. >_> Plus the first time around I kept getting confused with the blue balls and the places where it showed my bullets had missed, so I kept shooting into my misses lol. As another complaint on a 1440p screen it's kind of hard to see where they're popping up...

First time I got a -9100, second time I got a 14000. If this is really supposed to be representative of performance, that means I should do god awful in every FPS game I try. Which isn't really what happens.

@OP: If you're not good at aiming, then make it so you don't have to aim. Make it so that the game is more strategic and favors experience. Try to figure out areas where you can flank the enemy, try unconventional drop in routes to get the heads up, etc. Maybe play a sniper class, where it's not about necessarily doing split second aiming very quickly, but about hiding somewhere, lining up that shot, and pulling the trigger at just the right time. Or just play something that has a grenade launcher lol.

That's pretty shitty, right?

Shrug, after three trials, my reaction times were 0.85-0.95 seconds with about 90% accuracy. I routinely hold my own (almost always in the top half, often in the top 3) in DOOM, which is the first MP FPS I've played extensively in years. Like others have said, if your hands fail you, then use your head. And use a weapon you don't have to be accurate with to rack up the kills.

I used to play Urban Terror. I was in the top 10 of skeet shooting tournaments. But during normal gameplay I had a KD ratio of like 1. On large sniper maps, using TAC goggles, I had a KD of 30-40.
When I think about it now, I think my crappiness during TDMs and Free For All was related mostly to knowing the map and anticipating where people were.
Also, I tended to be a hot head, usually didn't watch my back enough and didn't cover enough.
So, if I were to pass some tips along, it'd be:
Gear tips:
- disable mouse acceleration and other enhancers
- try to tweak your USB polling rate to 500Hz
- get a CRT :p
- a good cloth mousepad is a must
- avoid WiFi
- headphones, not speakers
Gameplay tips:
- set your crosshair to a white or red dot, if your game allows. Sometimes the crosshair is so large it obscures distant players
- never use the mousewheel to switch weapons. Use binds instead. Miliseconds count, not seconds.
- always maintain good cover -run alongside walls instead of out in the open
- if you run into an opponent who is facing you and standing still- consider running away. He's standing and possibly aiming, while you still have to fully stop and take aim. He'll win.
- pick your battles- if you're in enemy territory, and you see some random dude running perpendicular to you and far away- the time you'll need to aim and shoot will work against you because there is probably another guy incoming who's close by.
- if you run into an opponent who is not facing you and doesn't notice you, and you're close, either shoot for the head, knife him, or run away. Spraying into armour is ineffective.

Record some gameplay and link us it. We'd have to see HOW you play to fix you.

It wasn't until I found Overwatch that I decided to take a good look into what the pro's were doing to just see if it made a difference.

What I found was two things: Low DPI and sensitivity + large mouse surface. There are actually sites that have the pro's settings so I decided to copy one just to see what would happen...

Once I got used to it, this started to improve my confidence greatly. I was FAR more precise and felt I had a lot more control.
