Oculus: Over 50 Rift Titles Will Support Touch Controllers At Launch

Even if I like the technology, I refuse to jump on any of these competing platforms yet. Hopefully this doesn't drag out for years.

Those titles gave me the feeling I'm so not into them lol. It looks like every aspiring developer that makes game titles that suck too much to sell on 2D side jumped to the VR bandwagon. Most of the titles looked like discount-bin crap from late 90's.

I look at it as "niche" technology. The volume of sales needed to generate long term A-list software support isn't likely. Especially at the price point of the technology at this time. The PS4 VR solution is double the cost of the console itself. The PC VR solutions are even more money. I just don't see the 30 million units sold to generate serious long term software support. (atleast not at this time)

It's going to drag out for years, because VR is really just in its infancy. You have two major players with, for all intents and purposes, identical feature sets. VIVE lets you move around more...Vive also requires you to have space to move around. Long story short, software has helped with the current state of hardware (ASW for OR and whatever Valve is going to deliver to upgrade Reprojection), these two systems will have parity with one-another.

All anyone is waiting on now is some AAA titles.

correct me if i am wrong, but are not the various VR sets all proprietary, IE you cannot swap in/out hardware from various manufactures within the same title? Game X will only play on one, while game Y on another?

No. By default, every VR game sold on Steam that supports Vive also supports Rift. Developers can choose to lock their games to one device but the only instance of that I can think of is Google Earth VR.

Most Vive games are currently unplayable on rift because they require motion controllers, but they will mostly "just work" when the Touch controllers are released in a few days. At most, developers will need to update the in game controller models and maybe tweak button mapping.

Oculus does not have support for Vive on their store but there is a hack called ReVive that lets you play most Oculus games on (EDIT whoops): Vive.

The VR market is similar to the state of the 3D accelerator market of the late 90s. It will probably remain that way until a truly hardware agnostic API is released that developers want to support.

FTFY :D

I got the chance to play a few titles modded for VR on the rift+touch. I didn't have high expectations. After using it though I could immediately see that VR is the future of gaming. So freaking immersive! I for one am stoked about the future of gaming on VR.

Fuck oculus, VIVE all the way!

 Great, really added a lot there. If you really want to play cheerleader, do it right and either refer to both companies or both products. Mixing company names and products like that will just serve to confuse other millennials.

One of the nice factors of the Touch controllers finally arriving is that developers now no longer need to decide to target one VR device over the other. Both having controllers and being room scale capable will help widen/grow the target VR audience for developers - they can now release their stuff for both devices relatively easily on Steam. The Rift and the Vive aren't platforms. The PC is the platform. The Rift and the Vive are simply solutions as to controllers, sensors and display devices.

You must be fun at parties.

Very narrow minded mindset, Oculus only want a monopoly, as they already tried, yet people think that because they backpedalled now, is not their intention to have a monopoly and then lock everyone within their platform.

And if you need any other reason to be wary of them, remember which company owns them.

1) You've never seen me at a party.
2) I've never shared my mindset with you, so you can go bugger off. :D

1- not interested in a room full of things like you.
2- neither did I yet you invited yourself in.

They are not trying to hard.....

Since you tried both and like the VIVE that is cool. Why not tell us what you like about it over the Rift.

Oculus + leap motion ftw, no need for controllers....

Almost nothing supports leap and your hands can't be tracked when they're outside the FOV of the leap.

Also it would feel dumb to shoot a weapon with nothing in your hand.

If by nothing you mean all vive games, then yes. You can pick up a real gun if you want, though I'd make sure it's not loaded first.

Already have a Vive, and I am not really interested in products from Alphabet, but it is great that the Rift guys will soon be able to play pretty much all of the Vive content. It's great for us Vive owners as well, since both of the primary VR hardware providers now have similar control and movement capabilities, so it will be easier for devs to support both.

I already expressed why I dont want or care for rift in the comment that you quoted.

Ah yes, the reaction of someone who bought the lesser system.

Same response as above, but add a bit of fanboyism on your behalf.

Ah yes, Mr. Pot, meet my good friend over here, Mr. Kettle...

I own both a Vive and a Rift. Why? Because I like VR tech and while they both are similar, they each have their unique pros/cons and user experience.

Grtitan, your earlier less than eloquent dismissal of the Rift and calling my mindset "narrow minded" because I commented that I was glad that the Rift was now also getting motion controllers, thus allowing developers to easily support both VR headsets just further digs your hole as to contributing very little to the discussion here.

I don't give a rat's ass as to perceived corporate agendas/politics concerning backing and/or funding devs to support a particular device. Nothing that Oculus has done has prevented devs from supporting both - they've just paid some to develop and support their VR display/controller solution first. That's not a monopoly, that's just business.

You're entitled to your opinion, but try a little harder to add to the discussion here rather then just spew vitriol.

Again, the Rift and the Vive are NOT separate platforms ala Playstation and Xbox. The *PC* is the platform. The Rift and the Vive are simply two choices as to a display, sensors and controllers on that PC platform to provide a VR experience. Ones that are now quite similar as to capability. If you play via Steam, they'll offer a user gaming experience that is pretty much identical save for some minor controller configuration nuances.

I simply enjoy VR tech and like playing with and using both HMD's. I'm really looking forward to the arrival of the Touch controllers tomorrow (confirmed afternoon delivery for me, woot!) and I see this as further promoting and advancing VR tech adoption, which in my book is a good thing. VR tech is still very much in its infancy and it's adoption needs to grow further. I am confident that it will. All this "taking sides" crap is utter B.S.
