I have some bad news for you guys. Are you sitting down? Stephen Hawking says that humans will not survive another 1,000 years. The good news? Who cares? None of us are going to be here anyway. ;)

The renowned theoretical physicist believes that life on Earth is at an ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as a sudden nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus, or the rising threat of artificial intelligence. He urged people to take more interest in space travel, and said that we must continue to go into space for the future of humanity.

Is there nothing he wont do for publicity? I know he doesn't have much time left and he wants his name to be remembered but this is getting ridiculous.
Aliens, A.I. He is a very smart guy and he is going to be remembered but if he keeps this up he'll just be known as "that doomsday crackpot".
Not everyone can be Albert Einstein or Carl Sagan.

Hogwash. We have new land being uncovered by melting ice everyday. Science will continue to solve problems as they arise and once people get pushed into a corner they will change their ways.

Just more fear mongering. Homey needs to stick to appearances on The Big Bang Theory.

The population of the world has doubled since the 1970s. Their won't be enough food to feed everybody if it doubles again.

At which point survival of the strongest will take over. Just because we can't feed our entire population doesn't mean our entire population will suddenly die off.

Carl Sagan.. hahahah. "We are all made of star stuff".

Putting Einstein and Sagan in the same context is absolutely and completely laughable.

I do agree that Hawking seems to be going more and more loopy as time goes by.

Actually, there would be plenty of food to feed twice as many people.

Unless it has changed, the US government pays farmers to NOT farm in order to not tank the prices of some foods.

And in some countries... where the people worship what should be the food, but instead they are not allowed to eat it (cows) they are going hungry.

The biggest problem is not the lack of food, but the governments and crazy ideas and lack of actually producing food that is the problem.

Basically, the problem is that people are being dumb about it, nothing else.

Western civilization is already on the decline in many countries. The elderly outnumber the young in the US by a good amount. I recently heard about some European country that is considering paying couples to procreate.

They've been predicting that for hundreds of years, yet food production keeps rising, and the number of people working on farms keeps dropping.

And if we really have global warming, it will lengthen growing seasons and open new land areas to farming.
Combined with the increase in CO2 (it makes plants grow faster) I don't see a problem.

Which is the real problem.
Western educated counties are not having enough kids, while people in poor uneducated counties continue to have large families.

Wait, what? I thought too much CO2 was bad. You know, the glaciers are breaking off, etc. causing the oceans to rise etc. Hmmm ...

You're right. It will be survival of the fittest.

He would have said similar things if he was born a thousand years ago, oh wait, it would not have survived to this age, oh wait ....

Stephen Hawking says that humans will not survive another 1,000 years.
Except that's not at all what he said, and is likely pissed people are milking this very misleading headline.
Stephen-fucking-Hawkinson said:
I don’t think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet
And went on to say that he expects we'll have colonies on other planets like Mars before then.

Humans are adaptable as shit!

Humans are adaptable I will give you that but by the looks of what is happening now with all the cry babies who needs safe spaces, coloring books, safety pins and other "baby" stuff I am not holding my breath for the human race.

There were already a few eyebrow raising statements from him in the last few years. I no longer take anything he says without a fair amount of skepticism. He became a naysayer. Much like Kaku became the mouthpiece on everything even remotely related to science. I swear the guy is on 9 out of 10 programmes on discovery science.

oh gee not that retard again blabbering about things he has no idea about

Although I agree with you it only goes so far. There are still more than enough tough bastards running around. The weak just won't make it if it gets real hard.

I figure that the population will reach a point where things get tough and that is when governments will get tough and people will get tough and frankly the toughest will make it and the others won't live so long. Harsh reality will have it's way.

From what I read here the neonazis are crying themselves to sleep after their evening hate-wank because the world doesn't want to listen to their endless, mindless bullshit.

The survival of the most adaptable is not a process taking place in your mommies basement or on 4chan. If the survival of the most adaptable was as simple as your ideologies are we would have been wiped out millennia ago.

Fortunately it's the crud between our ears that makes us special, not our sword arms.

1000 years seems like a very optimistic number to be honest...

Twisted Kidney evolution doesnt care about species, evolution care about itself, and we (humans) are nearing our end

I can't agree. I don't think humans are nearing the end of our time. Maybe that sets me up as one of the first to go but we are not like most of the animal kingdom and instead of adapting to our environment we find ways to change our environment to suite our needs. We have the technology, not enough water, combine 2 parts hydrogen with one part oxygen and salvation is upon us. Need food, it's not very appealing for most but the cockroach is protein and those little buggers can live through almost anything. It's an old saying but I have never seen it false, where there is a will, there is a way.

Of the top of one's head, or their best googling fingers, how many people do we need in order to maintain a viably diverse gene pool? A little quick google work brings up what seems to be the accepted technical term, MVP or
Minimum Viable Population, and it seems a popular estimate is 80 women and 80 men or 160 people.

That is a pretty small number. Let's multiply that number by 10 and say we need 1,600 people.
Now kill all the rest, Auschwitz on steroids, earth to earth, dust to dust.
Now how long will our 1,600 last?
If the earth is in a downward spiral because of man, would Mother Nature get a breather?

I vote we all use the vaults

Better study for the G.O.A.T.

In a thousand years, if I am calculating correctly, I would be REALLY old.

Oh wait, I am already!

Nevermind

lcpiper we're just the first somewhat intelligent species in this planet, this is like the amoeba of intelligent creatures, do you really think this is it?

Agreed, the idea that this planet will go bad and it would be better to try and create a new one with a large dome or something, it would be easier to just create the dome here :p

I think it's possible we have been here before and that previous rises were destroyed by time. There are some amazing animals on this earth, and I have seen people do some pretty amazing shit, but this planet as a whole, and life in general, just blows my mind. A giant oil spill in the gulf, devistation of the beaches and wild life in the region, little freaking microbes we never seen before ate the oil. That blows my mind.

You are probably correct, we are like Humans v 1.3 counting troglodytes and neanderthals, and so that's why something like a microbe that would eat oil is so wild to me cause a true mental giant would have already deduced that any resource, even oil, could have a consumer and so maybe Human 2.3 won't be so easily amazed as I (y)

. A giant oil spill in the gulf said:
You do realize that those microbes were genetically man mad and introduced by man, they ate the oil then floated out to sea and sank. oil will in seven years break down and become fertalizer. Look ate the Valdeze after the spill, everything died then came back lusher than ever possible.

Ah well I can tell you this The earth will end when Jesus returns and says it's over but no man knows the hour. When I look pout my window I see lots fo land that is forest, it doesn't take much land to feed a family for an entire year.

Maybe it's the optimist in me but I think we'll be fine. We continue to improve our quality of life and are making large advances in health and science constantly. Yeah if a giant asteroid slams into the planet we're screwed but barring some catastrophic event like that, I think humans will be around a long, long time and colonizing other planets possibly.
