ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced GX800, a gaming laptop with the latest NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 SLI graphics and an advanced version of the Hydro Overclocking System liquid-cooling module. The 18-inch GX800 is the first gaming laptop designed to deliver real 4K UHD gameplay. It features NVIDIA G-SYNC™ technology and supports leading virtual-reality (VR) headsets for super-smooth and stutter-free VR gaming. In addition, GX800 features the Mechanical Tactile Advanced Gaming (MechTAG) keyboard with programmable ROG Aura RGB LED effects for individual keys.

Problem with being very complex, there's more to go wrong.
Asus support, well... I wouldnt be a guinea pig.

This is a portable machine for people who want to have the ability to play games while on the go. It isn't for the people who think 8lbs. is heavy, wear fedoras, obsess over all things Apple, and want to be seen writing the next shitty screenplay that will never sell in a Starbucks with their smug ass friends. :)

On a more serious note, hardware like this has a niche which won't appeal to most people. It's called a desktop replacement for a reason.
 
At what point, with that much bulk, weight, and cost, do you not just buy yourself a desktop instead?

A friend of mine still lives at home technically. He is going to college and is never at home. He spends his off hours at his girlfriend's place or over at friend's houses. He used to lug his Corsair Obsidian 800D everywhere. When he asked me to upgrade it, I told him to go for a desktop replacement type laptop. He's glad he did.
 
Asus doesn't call it a desktop replacement. They call it a laptop. Look at their own press release.

I want to see someone trying to use this on their actual lap, playing a FPS game. They're either getting leg burns or dropping thousands of dollars worth of computer hardware. Not that it's not a fast computer without the water cooling dock, but you just have to ask how much you'd use the dock.
 
I don't really care what they call it. It's a desktop replacement based on the level of hardware in it. Laptops burning people goes well back to the early 2000's at least. That's nothing new, nor does it change what people call these things.
 
All I can think of is the bubbles that will be introduced every time you undock and redock the cooling system.

My laptop is a 8lb, 17.3" 4 hour of battery life having thing as well.

This is just a monstrosity. As I've told people for so long, buy a half decent portable laptop and a gaming desktop. NOTHING like this can be remotely considered "portable"

Thats about 23lbs. 12.5 for the "laptop" alone.

With a 76Wh battery they have it listed as it coming with. It will probably be able to run under battery power without the watercooling dock for about 5 minutes.

For the price and weight, I'd personally be more into just cramming an SFF build into a briefcase. You'd have the perk of it being upgradable, and wind up with more room for a larger monitor too. Plus, wedging in a couple of full-fat 1080s in SLI would be a pretty fun challenge.
 
It's a laptop in the sense that you can unhook part of the PC and put it on your lap. I also wouldn't be surprised that if it doesn't detect the docking station, it's going to severely throttle both GPUs or flat out disable one, meaning it would only be "serious" gaming laptop if it's on its docking station.

It sure is a very specific use-case and some people really do find use for desktop replacement laptops...but water cooling?? To my knowledge, high end gaming laptop systems don't throttle (the good ones at least) so I just don't get the added water-cooling gimmick. No one in their right mind would play a game with the thing on their lap so to me the cooling appears to serve one function: peace of mind that you're getting cooler temps with no other added benefit.

I guess you can overclock it but it's still a bit much in my opinion.
 
Like I have said before, I know lots of people who travel 90-100% for their jobs, but love gaming like all of us, building a desktop to carry around is bulky and even heavier than this is, some are not much into custom builds either. For something like this, they make good money and would not have a second thought if this is under 5k. With that said, I would think the market is pretty small for this.

I don't know how this is not a serious gaming laptop even if one of the 1080s is turned off, but from reading, they are not, the dock is for OCing (which is why its called a Overclocking Dock), when connected it auto OCs the CPU/GPU and RAM, under aircooling it seems both GPUs are still active but everything is at stock clocks, still making this a beast of a laptop.

Definitely a very small market for stuff like this and I would imagine even smaller for those that want to overclock. :confused:
 
WTF is that? What is that design? It looks like one one of those junk plastic portable stereos from the nineties. That's so ugly I wouldn't want it for free.
 
it never gets old making fun of this thing... but what the actual fuck asus... just make a vertical stand for the rad and pump that goes behind the screen VERTICALLY, instead of sticking a foot out BEHIND it.

No. The dock allows it to run unthrottled. Without the dock, the GPUs won't run at stock speeds.

Yeah,

This seems like a needlessly complex design.

If I were to do this, I'd design it with powerful GPU or two in the dock connected electrically (where you could water cool them if desired) and have the system just use a lower end GPU (either intel IGP or lower end Nvidia) when not docked.

Heck, stick a desktop Pascal Titan X with water cooling, and have it connect to the laptop with a custom 16x PCIe interface in the dock. When undocked have the laptop either use IGP or maybe a 1060m, that way you don't need a water interface to the laptop itself.

Having a fluid interface in the dock just seems overly complex, and failure prone to me.

That being said, I'd be curious to have a closer look at that interface to see how it is designed. Also, I wonder if it is easy to mod to add additional radiator capacity to the dock?
 
You could just mod a brief case to make yourself a vastly more powerful machine with longer battery life.

Hell, you could just mod your biggest piece of luggage and put 200lbs of batteries and PC in it. That makes every bit as much sense as this.

Plus baggage handlers would LOVE you.
 
My NP9873 (6700K @ 4.4ghz + SLI 1080 @ 1800mhz) seems a fair bit more practical.
 
I guess I could see the case for rich people to want a portable gaming monster "laptop".

But like others on this thread, I'd just build one into a suitcase/briefcase and call it a day.
 
I am still rocking my G73h-x2 from like 2009. It is getting a little long in the tooth, but still works for what I need it to do.

What if my smug ass friends hate Apple, but all wear fedoras and also think 8 lbs is a heavy, but manageable weight? Where does that land me?
