On Monday, Microsoft Corp. announced its largest purchase of wind energy to date with the signing of two agreements. Combined, these agreements represent 237 megawatts of wind energy, which brings Microsoft’s total investment in wind energy projects in the U.S. to more than 500 megawatts. “Microsoft is committed to building a responsible cloud, and these agreements represent progress toward our goal of improving the energy mix at our datacenters,” said Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer at Microsoft. “Our commitment extends beyond greening our own operations because these projects help create a greener, more reliable grid in the communities in which we operate.” Microsoft has contracted with Allianz Risk Transfer (ART) to fix its long-term energy costs and purchase the environmental attributes connected with the new, 178-megawatt Bloom Wind project in Kansas. The project is the first to use a novel structure developed by ART and designed to offset high upfront costs associated with the creation of large-scale wind projects. Microsoft is the first buyer to participate in this structure, which has the potential to bring clean energy projects online at a faster pace.
 
This and solar need to become a main source of energy. I would love to have a house that was powered by wind or solar to get me off big powers grid and help me be more self sufficient.

1st i tottaly agreeed
2nd. its not that efficient to have small windmill per house. the cost of building it materiaosl use and power usage to make those household windmill come out a negative gain.
that was one of the biggest issues around windmill energy back in the 80's when Denmark was putting out huge effort to move to wind energy. vestas made huge improvement on this but a lot of it comes from having bigger but smaller windmills.
Denmark hit their 50% renewable energy source usage in2015 and is aiming for 100% in 2050.
 
Looks like MS is ready to take a financial hit because they are going to put in more then they will get back.

Not entirely, but some places it provides a lot. In iowa, wind is 32% of electric production (about 6,500 megawatts), that's a pretty big chunk, and expect 40% by 2020.
