New Samsung 4k for everyone.

I recently purchased the Sony X800D from Best Buy at 43" 4K HDR. It has a nice picture, blacks are a little grey and washed out but the backlight is very nice with no PWM and the size is perfect for a computer monitor 4k at 43". However I previously had for about a month last year the 48" JS9000 which had an amazing picture across the board, black blacks and really bright and stunning HDR and colors that popped.

I am torn between the two screens at the same price - $800. The Sony HDR has not nearly the pop. I mainly use it to play games like Doom, witches 3, and a few others. Have a gtx 1080 so frame rates are pretty good at 4K. But I also like to watch amazon prime and that is where the HDR matters, and future games will look better also.

Do I go for the better contrast and HDR with samsung? Or the better dpi and no pwm on the sony? Tough call. I have to say I am leaning towards getting the samsung again at $800, as that picture was killer even slightly seeing the pixels.

You had the Samsung. Did the PWM bother you? If yes, then you shouldn't get the Samsung, there's no point in buying something you'll be unhappy with.

No PWM isn't so bad, I see flicker but I can deal with it. At home have samsung's last flagship plasma and love it. It flickers more than an LCD ever will, but man the picture is gorgeous. I remember the days of running my CRT Sony Trinitron's at 120 Hz to minimize flicker, 60Hz was unbearable on a CRT. Flicker on LCD's is much for subtle.

OLED is in my future but waiting a few more years for LG to tweak it. I do love bright screens with deep blacks and OLED is almost there. The new Sony flagships look great, much brighter than the LG OLEDs. Good for consumers!

Ebay just sent me an update on an auction for the UN50JU6500 (50" 2015 model)...

It was $699 but got lowered to $529 for a limited time. I can't remember if this one was super good or not, but I do believe it tags all of the boxes for 4K/60hz and 4:4:4 chroma. And hey, 50" 4K set for $530 shipped....

Samsung UN50JU6500 - 50-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED HDTV

Just thought I'd drop the link here in case anyone was interested...

I tried to update the fw, from the USB stick ( NTFS and FAT32 ) and " NO CONTENT " shows up
Through the internet, it says " there is no update " ...
Any ideas ?

Wow watched a Star Trek TNG episode on the Samsung. No comparison, blows away the Sony. I had forgotten how vivid the colors and dark the blacks are on the JS9000. If anyone wants a screen this size there is nothing at this price that can complete with last years flagship.

Just some very brief first impressions with my new 2016 model 49" Samsung KS8000. Note: this is the non-curved version. The KS8500 is the curved version. This is also the 2nd down from the top model. The top being the 9000 and 9500.

I paid $1,300 with tax from Best Buy. I am all about saving on tax but my greatest fear is having the set beat up and slammed around during shipping.

I will possibly post a more in-depth review this coming week or the following week. I just returned from a vacation and I am just feeling really lazy.

* First of all, it has a glossy disply, and I love it. I don't game with tons of windows and here in Kansas City, it can really heat your house up if you don't draw your shades. So for me it's a none issue.

* It's a premium design and build. Love it. Silver bezel, which I am pretty sure is metal and not plastic. Nice metal feet. Initially I thought the feet design would be an issue for me but it's not. One cool thing not shown is the feet can be reversed and turned inward if you are working with not a lot of room. This could be a life saver for some.

* Latency is 20ms in gaming mode. This is just fantastic. I am not noticing anything different over say a traditional gaming monitor. Everything is super fast. FYI. You have to change the port to console before you can select gaming mode. Changing over to gaming mode still keeps 4:4:4 intact. I see no difference between PC and Gaming modes.

* The smart tv function is pretty seemless. They use some sort of overlay on the screen and it's super fast. It didn't notice any lag going between say my desktop and Amazon prime video.

* HDR - I played with this a little. Looks great so far ( I think ) I tried it with Bosch Season 1 which is supposed to have HDR baked in and I did noticed ether really great contrast or they used fantastic lighting to light up dark scenes very subtly. I honestly need to see more HDR content.

* The smart remote sucks if you ask me. The voice feature is VERY inconsistent and or favors paid content first. Saying "lauch Youtube" works fantastically well or just saying youtube but then when you do a search within Youtube / Amazon, it brings up paid content first. Or I am imagining things. it should be nearly flawless like Android.

* Scaling works fantastically well. I've played at 1080p and 1440p and it just works right. Absolutely nothing to complain about. Would you would expect a high-end display to provide.

* The blacks are inky black and it's just lovely. The colors vibrant. This display has the best picture I've ever seen. So far I've found no dead pixels.

* I do believe this has built in dual-band AC wireless. My 5G showed up off my router.

* A rather large cleaning cloth was included which I thought was a nice touch.

* My over-all impression is that this set is definitely a keeper. I've owned a lot of large displays going back 18 years. 21" CRT Nokia's and Gateways to higher end Sony 21" and 24" CRTs. I was also one of the first owners when the W1 and W3 Westys were all the rage. This set lives up and honors those displays of old. It's great and I love it. Worth the money and I very VERY rarely say that.

I will reply to any questions here in the forums about my new KS 8000. So ask away.

Anyone know if we need SAMSUNG 3D glasses for JS models?
I have a JS9000 and Philips PTA519 active 3d glasses, but they don't seem to work.
According to the tv manual, we need to use Samsung's 3d glasses, but I call bullshit on that.

Nebell

I already had a few pair of the Samsung 3D glasses when I bought mine....so that is all I have used...be interested to know thr answer to your question...

I didn't get any 3D glasses with my TV. I don't think Samsung offered 3D glasses in my region. It's not that they are expensive, they are $20.

Still, I would like to know why it won't work with Philips active 3D glasses since I have those already.

God dammit, I was leaning towards the sony x800d for mixed tv/pc use, and you made it seem like it's total trash compared to the samsung. It has a VA panel but apparently still has terrible blacks compared to the samsung with local dimming, and the colors are not even as vivid?

Did you have it in the right picture mode? People who have reviewed it seem to like the picture on amazon and best buy, or did they just not see the glory that is the samsung?

EDIT: I need to test for myself. I think I'm going to try and bring a usb stick with some HDR content to see how different sets handle the image quality. I wonder how feasible that will be if I showed up to best buy to test these things out?

I have owned a lot of high end displays. Projectors, Plasma's, LCD's, CRT's. Without a doubt there is no comparison for the sony x800d and the JS9000. The JS9000 blows it away, a Lexus against a Mazda. I drive a 2005 Lexus GX470 and would never trade it for a 2017 Mazda, they just don't compare.

Sony looks good on paper and was a decent display but I would never in a million years own it at the same price as the JS9000 or even half the price. My advice is order the JS9000 and don't waste your time comparing it in the store, which will make you frustrated as you can't really get it set up right. Order the JS9000 and spend the time instead having fun playing games and watching movies.

I have not been able to find the 49" samsung for similar cost. The sony is retailing for around 700 dollars, the other one is around 900 if used, new prices are not showing up in most places. The newer variant looks like it's going for around 1300 dollars... seems a bit of a steep jump for lower pixel density when close up. Also, expanding to larger sizes than 43 inches makes me wonder what other companies are offering in that size range. What about larger Hisense options? Need to do more research. Still going to head to a best buy later on this week to check things out with my own eyes. I intend to use this in a dark room and want to see if watching something like the new star trek show will be that terrible on the midrange sony vs some higher end and larger tv with local dimming. I know both will be better than my current monitor since it's an ips and glows like a christmas tree in grey dark, the sony is said to have an AUO VA panel, but again, I need to see just how bad and dull this screen looks in person, because the people who have reviewed it so far seem quite happy with the color

And if near 50 is the smallest with decent blacks, then the p series from vizio comes into play. How does the samsung compare to that?

Your review of the 43x800d disappoints me as well, but I do appreciate it. I was about to pick one up to use as a monitor. The 43x830c is also an option, but I suspect it has many of the same issues.

I can pick up a 48js9000 (for roughly the same price) or a 49ks8000 (for a bit more), but I'm worried that neither set will give me the pixel density that I want. I'm coming from a 2560x1600 Dell that I love, and the PPI on the Sammy would be roughly 10 less (100.6 vs 91), whereas the PPI on the Sonys would be just slightly better than what I have now at 103. Can I please get your thoughts regarding a resolution comparison given that you've seen both?

If it matters, I usually invest in high end tvs/displays -- I have a 60 inch Kuro plasma in my bedroom and an 85 inch Sony x950b in the living room -- so I can definitely tell the difference between a poor display and a good one.

In terms of pixel density the 40-43" range at 4K is almost perfect. I to came from a 30" Dell IPS Ultrasharp at 2560x1600 (great but still see the pixels compared to my 5K iMac at 27"). The Sony seemed perfect, but something strange happened. The first time I owned the 48" JS9000 I was bothered by the pixel density. I could ever so slightly see the pixels at desk distance. At $2000 it wasn't worth it. At $800 I completely changed my mind and the second time I owned the display the extra size from the 48" display far outweighed the ever so slightly viewable pixel density. Believe me I am not a fan of the screen door effect, so I was surprised to come to the conclusion that for the contrast and color of the JS9000 I was willing to have the slightly lower PPI.

Also playing Witcher 3 on the 48" JS is an absolute dream. The colors and details from the outfits and world are astounding. The Sony had absolutely no comparison, and frankly my Dell as good as it is looked flat and lifeless in comparison. I have a Samsung Plasma F8500 which is a beautiful display, but for games and desktop I prefer the JS9000.

I bought it from BJ's: Samsung 48" 4K UHD Curved Smart LED TV - BJ's Wholesale Club Still looks in stock. Really a high end display for $800 is a steal. I have been spending $2K plus for a long time. One note about quality: the very first high end plasma I bought still looks better then most screens sold today, they have an uncanny staying power. Heck in fact my Sony Trinitron that weighs 150lbs still looks better at 120Hz then anything today, save it's 24" size. As you have a Kuro you can attest!

There is a 43'' KS7500 but I don't think they sell it outside of Europe. It's the only smaller than 49'' KS TV this year.
It uses an AUO panel, while most other KS series use in-house SVA panels.

Wow, that is literally the perfect tv. Looks like it retails for around 1200 pounds though, so 1400 dollars us. It looks like next year is when things will actually get more interesting with better offerings in the US. This makes me want to lean on a cheaper solution to tide me over that is good enough. This weekend I'll see if that sony is good enough.

are you sure about this comment which means that we could get 4:4:4 chroma sampling in game mode (20ms input lag also) ?

i've been heard that 4:4:4 chroma sampling is only enabled when we turned on uhd color with pc mode

could you tell us more about that ?

I picked up a 49KS8500 and it's basically the most incredible monitor I've ever used. My concern about PPI wasn't a big deal after all. For some reason, "Game mode" is grayed out for me in the PC settings, but lag hasn't been an issue yet. I guess I'll just need to play with it more to figure out how to hone in all of the settings.

Sometimes you need to use a specific HDMI port to get certain modes to work.
Usually HDMI 1.

I have an issue with the JS9000, and i wonder if Samsung will replace the display / motherboard
Its a grey line / stripe / right in the middle of display ( attached image ) it's only visible on white backgrounds
I thought is the videocard, but i tried my PC with 2 different monitors, the PC - videocard is not faulty
So, what do you think, guys ? Will they fix this or i get a new display ?
Thank you

Could that be maybe an issue with One Connect Box ?

So what's the best of the best right now for desktop PC gaming? Are there no more worthy displays in the 40-50" range? The KS looks nice, I really want to jump to 4k, and OLED is still meh to me. But 55-65" is just going to kill me on a desk with a 30 inch depth.

A lot of people seem to be happy with the UN43KU6300, especially for the price.

The UN49KS8000 still comes in at under 50" and seems to be very highly regarded as well.

I too would suggest looking at the 49" KS8000 as a possible choice. Do your research thoroughly.

cheaper solution? maybe look at the Sammy ku6300 to tide over.. they have 40 inches for around 450.. I really wanted the sony x800d. but amazon had ku6300 for 429 at the time. which when I compared it in my head. for 2/3 of the price, it looks like I'm getting 90% of the pic of the sony.. hmmm..

I ended up going with the Sony. It looks good, not perfect, not ideal, not oled/qled, but good. More than enough to tide me over until cheaper emmissive displays come out on the market, hopefully with more pc gaming oriented features like variable refresh rate along with higher total refresh rate ranges and connectors.

When I first got it, it felt TOO big, I thought I should have gone with a 40" display instead of 43 inches, but it's grown on my and I've gotten used to it. I expect to get at least three years out of this before other display options entice me to upgrade away.

Trying to figure out which model I want, I know I want a curved 49"-55" model

What is the difference between the 2015 6700 curved and the 2016 6500 curved?

I can get the 2016 6500 curved on amazon for $634 right now - if there isn't much of a difference between the 2 models, could I find the older 2016 6700 model some where cheaper?

The 7500 series curves are about $250 more - are they worth it over the $634 6500 just for productivity and occasional gaming/movie watching?

Different markets seem to have some numbers used for different model types.
Most confusing.

I came from 3x Dell 3007WFP-HC monitors to the Samsung JU6700. (48" curved.) On the subject of PPI, I noticed the difference right away, but it wasn't too bad. As soon as I fired up some games I didn't notice the difference at all. Eventually I got used to it on the desktop and now I go back and forth between the two often as one of my 3007WFP-HC's is on the test bench. I don't think the PPI is that much worse in practice as it seems to be on paper. I think the strengths of the monitor outweigh that deficiency. That said, I'd prefer better PPI as well but I don't want to trade size to get it. Not when the PPI I have is "good enough" for me.

Looking to pickup a Samsung maybe this weekend. These are the 3 I'm looking at. I'm not sure what the difference is between them all, I think maybe the 7000 has HDR and the others don't? I'm not sure, but I have a ps4 so I wanted to have HDR. Hopefully someone can help me pick the right one here. Not seeing the curved display options though or if I should even bother with it?

You get what you pay for. I bought a 6500 last year and the motion blur was pretty noticeable and swap it for a 7500. HDR is also important. Personally, I think HDR is more of a game changer than 4K. 4K blu-ray HDR on my KS9500 is amazing.

Where do you get HDR content?

I tried some Netflix titles in 4k, but none of them had HDR.

I have a 70" Sony Z9D and can't test the HDR goodness it's supposed to have because of no content.

Only a few titles have HDR on netflix. The best in terms of just pure quality has been Marco Polo. However, I tested on my OLED c6 which also has DolbyVision so not sure how it is on a HDR10. Planning on buying Sony 43x800d this weekend so will test on that as well.

The above listing is almost 6 months old so I'm sure there are more now.

But you can't truly appreciate 4K HDR till you see it on a good 4K Blu-ray. You can get a 4K Blu-ray player fairly cheap now. I just bought a 2nd one for $200 (it's a refurb but works perfectly). Be sure to pick up Pacific Rim. Most reviewer have rated this as reference/demo quality.

And do realize that we've managed to get to the audiophile level with TVs. There are going to be people that can see things that others can't and some of them may just be making it up. I have a 48ju6700 and am very happy with it, feel it's better than any other monitor I've used. But on the other hand I'm someone who is entirely comfortable gaming on a non-gamer IPS since the 2407FPW and most recently the ZR2440w. All I'm trying to point out is that it's entirely subjective and you should see if you can't experience some of these displays before making a commitment.

With that said, Samsung support is pretty good. In one 5min conversation I got a ticket submitted to the firmware dev team to get dynamic contrast fixed. On my 6700 all the HDMI ports except the dedicated PC port are ignoring Dynamic Contrast=off.

Audiophile level, not really.
Close to some speakers, probably.

I have this issue which hopefully someone can help with. Whenever my UN40JU7100 goes into sleep after 1 minute while in PC mode the backlight will still be on,however, I noticed that when I'm in game mode and it goes to sleep, there is no backlight issue whatsoever which is what it should be doing in PC mode but it's not. To give some more info, on Windows 8.1 x64 the turn off display is set to OFF and in the TV Eco Solution everything is also set to OFF. What function is on or off that I'm missing which could be causing the constant backlight issue since I've double checked to see what options have switched when I use different modes? Also, since I have everything set to OFF, why is the TV still going into sleep mode? Not that it matters just curious if that's a hardware default option or something else.

Edit: Also to add, I'm using a GTX 780 TI

Then perhaps you didn't understand what I said. TVs have gotten to the point where some people cannot perceive some of the improvements that are being made. Perhaps I should point out that I don't count the upper echelon audio craziness as audiophile since $1000 power cables are religious icons, not audio products.

Thats pretty much most hifi.
Audiophile is not the term you were looking for.
