It will play 4k FILES!!! IT WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT play a UHD Bluray disc.

4k support ≠ UHD/4k Blu-ray support

I don't see anything on that page that states it supports 4k Blu Ray or AACSv2 discs. It probably means you can just playback unencrypted 4k video files through the software. it is good to see another BD Software solution since TMT went down the toilet though...

Well it does say it will play 4K movies. Are you saying non-encrypted movies or downloaded UHD movies it will play? It is vague but then it doesn't say AACS for Blu Ray either.

Now what is interesting is that for 4K playback it does not support AMD processors. You need an I5 or higher Hawell or later processor.

Generally speaking, there is no legal 4K content for the PC it will play.

drive needs to have support for AACS 2.0

and so far none of them supports it.

it will play unencrypted 4k content, it will not play UHD Blu-rays, as there is no PC hardware that has AACS 2.0 support, to decrypt the media.
 
Wow, no pc love for 4K movies. Well they will have one less buyer. I just find the compression for 4K download not much better then bluray
 
I've encountered downloadable 4K demo files and movie trailers online. Those are probably legal...but I don't know that for sure. Either way, PowerDVD 16 struggles with them but MPC-HC handles them 100% fine. MadVR even emulate HDR now, too. There's a Life of Pi trailer that uses it.

I'm curious about the PowerDVD UHD update. What kind of drive will be needed or were hardware manufactures waiting for the software before even getting started? I'm definitely game either way. As horrible as PowerDVD once was, the newer ones aren't horrible. You can control most of the bloat now and the default settings aren't way off.
 
There are certified drives, I bet they are announced at the same time as the software at CES.
 
I'm gonna need a bigger NAS to start ripping my uhd discs. But it will be nice to be able to watch in any room.
 
not to mention that new drive "requires" kaby, BS....

edit: right now the best way to 4k is a xb1-s. cost the same as a stand alone player and its a gaming system.

I was more than willing to buy one, but I'm not about to get a Kaby Lake processor, mobo, RAM, etc. just for this. Especially with the pitiful gains it offers.
My PS4 can handle 4K Netflix so I'll just have to deal with that until someone (or Nvidia/ATI) find a way around this requirement. It would be one thing if Kaby Lake didn't suck.

Only reason KL is required is due to them being the only ines to support ReadyPlay3.0

If/When AMD or NV decides to support it then KL won't be a requirement.
 
Its shit like this that pushes me closer to buying the Oppo 203; Id have to spend close to that much on a new build anyways...

Yeah- that link talked about PlayReady3, and how it isnt available but on KB and 10xx series nVidia- you mean my 980ti cant handle your "requirements?"

Also, to be even clearer, Id need to throw in an sfx case, power supply, ddr4 now, and a way for two hdmi out so i could send audio to my "old" 2014 elite receiver, and it just becomes a hassle; plus I've always wanted an Oppo
 
just going to blow everyone's mind here, a blu ray disk is technically a DVD (digital video disc), so OP wasn't really inaccurrate. We all knew what he meant.

Actually it's maiden name is "Digital Versatile Disc" The Digital Video Disc name is a common misconception but it's not the official name of the format.

This is also true... the Oppo freaking rules, though, its upscaling is visibly better than my Samsung TV and the Pioneer Elite receiver I've got - I watched Roy Orbison's "Black & White Night" with the Oppo's emulated HDR setting and it was surreal...

It also easily bitstreams my Plex and Jriver (UPnP) media libraries, and yes, even the few HDR10 rips currently available (and recognizes the HDR space)...
