The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (free if you own the Legendary Edition)

I can see myself playing Skyrim again for a long time once the mod scene starts to take off. Just need SKSE and the Creation kit to come out. I did put 1200 hours into the original, I think I only quit because Windows 8 capped ENBoosts memory at and 4gb and made the game less stable highly modded.

Just tried it out for the sake of trying it.

Give me real MSAA/FXAA, allow me to turn off motion blur without editing ini files, and give me a sharpening filter.

Oh, and SkyUI.

This is Fallout 4 all over again, I swear.

*uninstalled, sticking with modded Skyrim for now

Again; I think people need to realize that graphically it wasn't going to look much better.

The big deal is that we have a somewhat modern engine now that won't be memory limited anymore. Once your favorite texture/mesh/whatever mods get ported over to SE you'll have a far superior experience as you won't be fighting all the limitations of the 32-bit ancient client it used to run.

Also most of the blurry-ness isn't really due to TAA, but the cranked up DoF slider that you can change in the in game options menu.

the old engine had issues running on my laptop the new special edition runs like butter on my laptop...

Seems to be the general consensus. The comparison videos I watched a few weeks ago made it look a lot better, but the screenshots I've seen today are very underwhelming. I bought the rest of the dlc just to get this, but I didn't even bother loading it up after reading the feedback on it. I guess it's really my fault, it's Bethesda, I should know better. Give it six months for them to fix the kinks and hope modders do their magic.

I mean if anyone wants the legendary edition for $13, buy it from a cdkey website. I helped out quite a few friends who didnt have the DLC.

IT's free for 99% of the people

Installed the mesh improvement mod along with the 2k texture mod. Game runs/looks great.

With the old 32-bit version of the game the game would stutter and eventually crash after 30 minutes or so w/ those two mods installed. For that reason alone this is an outstanding update. W/ the memory limitations removed i'm somewhat excited to see the mesh/texture mods be improved upon even more.

Can't believe all the bitching over a free refresh. Play the original or don't buy it if you don't like it, holy shit.

And yet, still physics-locked to 60 Hz.

Honestly I don't see this as a big deal, and this is coming from a guy with a 144hz panel. This isn't some FPS where I need 100hz to play well. It's a rpg, and it runs just fine locked at 60hz. Sure the additional smoothness from a higher framerate would be nice, but this really isn't a deal breaker.

The deal breaker before with Skyrim were the memory limitations. The game has basically been unplayable for years w/ a decent level of texture/mesh mods strapped on. Now we can finally play the game without constant crashing / stuttering. Not to even mention the fact that the 32-bit client didn't even work on Windows 10 anniversary edition on the latest NVidia drivers due to the WDDM version change.

That is just it if you played the first one and owned all of the expansion you get this one free and they can be installed in parallel you don't need to uninstall the old.. this can be considered a patch to fix the old...

I said "or don't buy it".

Apparently SkyUI 2.2 works with the remaster, you have to go through the 'older versions' section of Nexus to find it.
Considering how some of the old skyrim mods worked with fallout 4 day one no or little modification I'm not surprised I would be more surprised at the number that don't work...

They first ported the skyrim engine to ps4 then they did fallout 4 on the now updated engine now they finished skyrim in the new engine and gave it as a free patch to anyone who already owned the full game...

Well I tried it out today. Time to check for some mods. Seems like too much bloom effect to me. I see options for motion blur and other shit, but nothing to do with bloom/HDR ect. so if someone can enlighten me on what to change that would be awesome. Also might wait for an update to the Flawless widescreen program, because some developers don't include FOV/resolution options for ultrawide monitors. Changed the resolution in the config file, but I hate digging through that just to make it so everybody doesn't look like a fat ass. Graphically speaking the updates are meh for vanilla. It looks like what original Skyrim looked like to me with mods with the exception of better lighting.

Install the 2k/4k texture mods along with the mesh enhancement mod. The big issue with Skyrim is how terrible some of the meshes/texturing is. The problem is that w/ the 32-bit client you couldn't run all these higher resolution textures/meshes without the game crashing every time you zone. That issue is fixed now that memory isn't an issue.

Reading that the PC and XBone versions have the highly compressed audio. The PS4 version is supposed to be correct with the higher quality audio.

Is it possible to just copy the audio from vanilla Skyrim into SE on PC?

Should be. All the textures/meshes/whatever work 1:1 so if you extract the audio files you should be able to replace.

Anybody have any suggestions for what build to play for a new player to the series? I was thinking of a mage but sometimes certain play styles are not friendly to new players.

Had the legendary version sitting in my library for some time. Might be time to start giving this game a try.

Mage is pretty weak in vanilla Skyrim. Spell diversity sucks, the skill trees suck, the class is overall very under-developed.
Sneaky archer is BY FAR the most popular class.

The game is very casual friendly, even on the hardest difficulty, you can literally play whatever you want. You don't 'pick a class', all skills are available to you and they level up as you use them.

Personally I always play a spellsword -- Destruction in my left hand, 1-handed weapon in my right hand.

I decided to try a Necromancer this time around. Will stick with Bound Weapons for weapons. I have played the Spellsword/Sneaky bow/daggers/heavy 2h.....Figured fuck it lets Necro out.

So far on Expert.....pretty rough I like it!

Just FYI be aware that the dawnguard DLC adds this silly function where vampires randomly spawn in populated areas and can then kill NPC's. This is a *big* problem as it will quickly kill off important NPC's and i'm not sure why Bethesda ever implemented it in this shitty way. So make sure you download a mod that disables this if you are trying to do a longer lasting 'normal' playthrough. Besides the standard texture/mesh mods that specific mod is absolutely vital for a gameplay experience that won't break down over time due to NPC's being killed off.

Can only manage about 4K ~50fps with my 980 Ti.

There is a new Nvidia Driver 375.70 for Skyrim Special Edition, you may want to try it. I'll test it out later when I get off work.
The new driver didn't fix my G-Sync issues, unfortunately.
And yet, still physics-locked to 60 Hz.
On that subject, someone on r/PCMR found something that looks interesting. I want to try it out on this and the other Gamebryo/Creation engine games, now.

A 1H+shield with support magic lends itself best in this game. Unbelievably the magic system is still not great in this game. There was far more diversity in spells in Oblivion.

Just play how you want is my best advice. In casual play I would pick 40-50 perks for the abilities you focus on and stick to that plan. Other than that there is really no way to mess up your build unless you shoot for level 81. Even then, it is now possible to level forever with all the DLC, allowing you to eventually get all the perks.

I fixed the gsync issues by simply changing the setting in the nvcp that forces games to run at your monitors refresh rate. So when skyrim starts up I'm running at 60hz vs 144hz and it runs fine.

I think I tried that, but I'll try again.

It works the majority of the time. For whatever reason though there are some times where it doesn't work, and this is whenever the game starts up but isn't the in-focus application. So what happens is that the game stays stuck at 144hz (or whatever you are using) instead of being allowed to run down at 60hz. When this happens just quit the game and relaunch.

Also, this will obviously only work if you allow the game to run in normal fullscreen mode.

Can anyone confirm that my current, modded Skyrim STEAM install will not be affected by installing the Skyrim Special Edition - also on STEAM?

I'd love to have a PURE vanilla install (Skyrim Special Edition) for what is basically two save profiles.

I want to play a bad guy (separate save) along side of my modded version where I play as a good guy / hero.

They seem to be totally separate STEAM installs according to this link:

Thanks, I'll look for this mod as that does seem to be an annoying game mechanic.

IMO they just took some mods that already existed and put them in the base version of the game, rewrap and resell (mostly to the console community).

If you own the game on the PC this is more or less pointless, no?
It's a bit more than that, especially if you're a heavy mod user.

This new version includes a 64bit compiled executable, which eliminates crashes associated with high-RAM-usage mods. This allows Skyrim to effectively use more than 4GB of RAM, for once.

Which is a BIG deal considering you'd hit the 4GB wall even w/ the static mesh improvement mod.

First-time Skyrim player question; so as you can see from my sig I have no issues running this game at 4K with all settings on Ultra. However, the draw distance for foliage is atrocious. Because of the wide-open landscape in this game I can very clearly see great distances and b/c of the 4K I can see quite clearly even smaller inconsistencies. In-fact I didn't even recognize this issue right away. I only happened to notice it after doing some running around. Anyway, does anyone know of a console command that fixes this? I already changed the FOV to 100 since anything less than that was terrible, but I was curious if there was a way to increase the detail level for distance objects any better?

This is not my screenshot, but this is the exact same thing that I am seeing on my game;
