Word on the street is that the Steep alpha is ramping up this weekend. Steep is a winter sports game based on a mountain and includes snowboarding, hang gliding, skiing and wing suit game play and more!

So far it looks like a pretty interesting game. Ubisoft has been coming out with some more interesting alternative sport games this year such as this, For Honor and The Crew.

Steep is developed published by Ubisoft. More information at the Steep Website

Yeah! This alpha seems to be pretty strict. Unlike the For Honor Beta.

I got in. Don't even have all weekend to try it out unfortunately. Heading out of town to the 'rents. Here's hoping SLI works (rofl, that'd be the day :ROFLMAO:) and I can actually get some playtime in. Reminds me, if I do bring the SLI laptop I'll need to find myself a fireproof blanket to put on my lap to I don't burn my thighs. Literally :0

Definitely keen to try this out. I'm a skier, but I really enjoyed one of the old Amped games on Xbox and whichever SSX game had the open freeride type mountain course and Hybrid - Wide Angle on the soundtrack.

Hoping for a good season in Whistler this year :).

cant talk about steep cause they decided to let me in but...
there is the f2p game on steam called Snow and it looks pretty good too.

grambo, you in bc? only been to whistler once and it was a really nice place, but i was there for music not snow. im out near Calgary and love seeing Canadians on [H]!

Yep, I live in Vancouver and I get about 25 days a winter skiing in Whistler, it's amazing and only 90 minutes from my door. I grew up in Calgary and learned to ski in Banff/Lake Louise, they are world class mountains for sure but have nothing on Whistler because it actually snows here :).

Yeaaah. I grew up in Calgary and learned to ski at Wintergreen (when that place was still open) then graduated to Louise/Sunshine. Nowadays, being in Los Angeles, I don't have many options unless I feel like driving 6+ hours.

that's cool im up in airdrie. ive only been to sunshine and nakiska a couple times. then I realized I'm to old for snowboarding as I didn't keep it up from when I was young. I hurt for days! [H]CANADA!!

fyi, there are several new videos posted and the beta starts tomorrow.

Dang, 19.58 GB for a beta.

Yeah, I hit it for about an hour and I'm not sure I'm a buyer of this game or the genre as a whole anymore.

Snowboarding is not as cool IRL or this game as the red bull highlights would lead you to believe haha

And the wing suit.. ffs, face palm face dive. Based on my experience, anyone dawning a 'Squirrel Suit' is a grade a moron. It's not even fun in game epicly crippling yourself. Maybe they had to make it not fun to ensure people don't try it IRL and up getting pants their sued off.

I played 2 or 3 hours of the beta on the weekend and it was pretty fun. Not $79CAD fun though. Will try the open beta again this weekend but unless it really catches me I will be waiting and getting it 50% off. No friends are interested so it will just be single player for me.

To be honest the graphics are a letdown even 100% maxed out. The character model and snow are ok, but trees look horrible.

Yeah what they're doing isn't anything we haven't seen before, and a few details like the snow filling in almost immediately after you walk by or carve a line is just lazy programming. The handling is also a bit sloppy considering the sense of speed isn't necessarily easy to gauge nor what you can and cannot jump off of.

Wingsuit, paragliding - Pilotwings felt better than this does.

The sense you are on a mountain is neat, and you get that Red-Bull-is-funding-my-wildest-dreams feeling, but... something still feels off.

I'm sure it'll be a series though, now that EA gave up SSX.

For some reason I remember having more fun playing the first SSX and the old Amped games on original Xbox, just cruising around and jumping/doing tricks etc. I've read that people are enjoying playing Steep with friends (i.e. setting challenges and watching their friends attempt them), but none of my gamer friends are interested in this... especially not at full price.

I tried it today and enjoyed the game play. I might get it at a discount later on. If I had friends that I could break their records with, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Hmmm, this has me thinking, why hasn't anyone ever made a mountain climbing sim? If done right that could be really good and challenging.

While that isn't always a clear indicator of a shit game, I did watch multiple streamers play this. They "sponsored" Lirik to play the game a few times, and all that did was showcase what a bore this looks to be.

This could've been really great, if they had a nice complex trick system like SSX or 1080 snowboarding. But as it is, it gets old fast.

Snow is free on steam btw. Nothing awesome but it is free. I would suggest turning the music off and playing your own tunes though.

Necro bump.

Just a reminder to get your FREE copy of Steep while it lasts. Ubisoft is giving it away until May 21.

I've had this on my wishlist for a while since these types of games are few and far between, and I have fond memories of playing snowboarding games on consoles when these types of games were more common (Amped, 1080° Snowboarding, SSX, etc.)

The trick system isn't as insane and satisfying as something like SSX, but it makes up for that in other ways. The map is massive, you have complete freedom in what you do, and there are of course other things to do besides ski and board (wingsuits, paragliding, etc.)

I love the fact that the game doesn't constantly drop you back to menus like most racing and "extreme" sports games do. Normally, when you finish a race or a run in those games, you get a screen telling you how you placed and then it's back to the menu for the next event. In Steep, you can participate in a challenge and then when you cross the finish line you can keep riding down the mountain for as long as you like (or until you reach the bottom) and you have the option of jumping into another challenge at any point. This is very cool because you never have to be racing against a clock or stacking up maximum points if you don't want to. You can simply find a cool looking spot on the map, fast jump there, and leisurely ski down the mountain taking whatever route you wish. The whole thing feels very open and organic, and is relaxing and refreshing. I wish the trick system was more satisfying and fleshed out more as it seems rather limited to grabs, spins, and barrel rolls, but that can be forgiven considering what else the game offers.

Pick it up if you like these types of games at all.
