Agreed. Though, typically a BIOS update also forcibly invokes a BIOS settings reset, so maybe it was a side effect of that.
 
Look into a 6 core xeon if your board supports them. X5670 or 5680 seem to be popular here. X58 has a lot of life left IMHO if you do some cheap upgrades

x5650 can be had for around $50 on ebay, oc it to 4ghz and you have an excellent setup for the money
