Congratulations to these two dumbasses for potentially ruining the rest of their lives with a criminal record because, as members of the Lizard Squad and PoodleCorp, they thought it would be fun to launch DDoS attacks against Xbox Live, PSN and Battle.net. Your parents must be proud.

ZACHARY BUCHTA, 19, of Fallston, Md., and BRADLEY JAN WILLEM VAN ROOY, 19, of Leiden, the Netherlands, are charged with conspiring to cause damage to protected computers. The charges are the result of an international investigation into the computer hacking groups “Lizard Squad” and “PoodleCorp,” according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago. Buchta and van Rooy allegedly conspired with others to launch destructive cyber attacks around the world, and trafficked payment accounts that had been stolen from unsuspecting victims in Illinois and elsewhere.

You missed the important bit:

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

If you're going to DDoS a bunch of ISPs because you were banned for cheating by a huge game company, don't publish your plans on a public forum.

People have a nearly limitless capacity for stupidity.

Wow, they planned and bragged about it on the net? This is like taking pics of yourself robbing and putting them on facebook.

What is amazing is how often that actually happens. I hope these losers get everything they have coming. I get sick of that ddos crap.

Yup. Some assholes ddos'd Steam one christmas when I got my dad a game and it prevented me from installing it for him. Throw these assholes in jail for life.

They're never be able to get jobs in IT with that record and as script kiddies.

And everyone that is part of their network should receive a fine, for having compromised systems. I might be bitter and over-reacting...

I think the plea deal should be that they are forced to lock down all the compromised computers they are tapped in to so it starts to cripple these types of attacks.

Again for the n+1th time. Putting non violent criminals into prison where they're fed and housed by public funds is not a solution. It causes more problems. They should be relegated to serve a public service or go around schools educating young students how fucked up is what they did. Besides taking 25% of their all future earnings as a fine. No matter what they earn.
Putting them into prison is like paying them to not do anything. I wouldn't pay them to do nothing. I'd rather not pay them, take some of their money, and make them do something useful.

It should be established once and for all that prison is the place for criminals who pose immediate physical danger to property or persons if not kept locked up.

The problem is that we need a different kind of prison.
They should be sentenced to a few years of hard labor, like 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Could be anything from picking up trash along the highway, building fire roads or trails, or just making little rocks out of big rocks. You don't work hard, you only get bread and water that day.

Actually having to do manual labor would be the worse kind of punishment for these rich entitled brats. Make sure they are so tired by the end of the day that don't have the energy to cause problem in the prison.

Little punks should spend the next 10 years in the military. Give them a chance to turn it around.

Wow, pretty harsh for making some kids go outside to play and get exercise instead of mindless console bumming all day. These are non violent crimes, so please treat it like one so they can get off sooner.

Not while they are in. And if they remain stupid enough to do bullshit again, they can go right back.

Of course on one level I agree with you, that it is costly. But I have a solution for that that I doubt you'd agree with. It's a very inexpensive 9mm fix.

Fuck that. The military hasn't been a clearing house for miscreants for decades. Today's military is a professional fighting force not a social experiment.

To be clear, there was a time when this was acceptable, but back then, Sergeants would beat the hell out of these kind of guys until they learned to do what they were told. Today they don't have that latitude to adjust attitudes, so your suggestion is not a good idea.

You make it sound like the military is not supposed to be where a country sends its trash? Hmm

Now I wouldn't be opposed to sentencing some criminals to serve the military, but not in it. I am sure there is a need for parking lots to be cleaned and grass mowed etc etc. Or possibly put them in ammo manufacturers. Though I would love for sentences to reflect the crime. Like you steal something, you get to do charity work. You key someones car, you get to work a car wash. etc

Oh come on. You shouldn't really expect your professional force to aim for the lowest common denominator like that. I mean I understand why you'd say that given who gets recruited, but setting your bar that low is kind of pushing it.

First comment was meant as sarcasm. sorry next time ill put flag. I was assuming lcpiper would catch the tongue-in-cheek.

I got triggered because I cared ;_; even if those united states of America isn't my country.

We have work gangs from the local federal prison doing all the landscaping around base. They cover pretty much all the areas except housing.

I almost forgot about those groups....

But seriously, if you are going to do an attack like that and brag about it....make it a very elaborate, hard to pull off attack so that some government agency would want to hire you.

That's the thing. What's with these kiddies who have the patience and brain to read up about DDOS and coercion but fail to take the time to study up on lobbying and promotional techniques to make them employable?

While I don't disagree that some people don't deserve to live. But you can't just throw around capital punishment willy nilly. If everything is punishable by death then there is nothing to keep criminals from escalating their crime. If ddosing is now a capital offence, they'll have no problems killing people trying to escape and rampaging trough 3 states evading cops, because they're already getting the worst possible punishment. That's why you need to weight very carefully what do you punish by death. IMHO It should be reserved for premeditated killers, child molesters (I mean actually forcing sex with a minor, so basically half the catholic church and muslim men who keep to the teachings and choose their wives at 8 years old), and rapists (not the bullshit rape cases, but when someone really forces someone else by physical or mental threat to have sex with them)

Cuz Ill make you hire me or ill take down your companys internets brah!!!

As long as it is a prison the taxpayers are paying for it. I have no problem with making them do hard labour. But they should be made to get a regular job and feed and house themselves. Making them work extra for free, is no different than what I propoosed (taking a percentage of their earnings). But assigning jobs to them, and guarding them, and making sure they show up and perform, is more pain than it's worth.

I am being rather serious here. Lizard Squad kiddies are smart enough to see coercion as-a-service being a viable business model, but their choice of clientele is really piss-poor!
Their platform being a tiered dime and nickel by demand package simply isn't how you can maximize your profit earning for this sort of thing.

Which is why I have sardonically suggested that they be sent to work for peanuts at a Foxconn plant in China.

It is a sense of power, power they wouldn't have working for someone else.

Power they clearly don't deserve. But that goes for a great many I suppose.
