Team 33 [H] DC T Shirts

Musky, I value your opinion greatly, being such a great contributor over the years and leading the way for many of the forum members. It was not meant to single you out, only to focus more on positive ideas and constructive criticism. If you believe a committee is not needed to make the decision, please let us know how you believe it would be best approached. Do you have a way to contact Kyle directly? I'm unaware of how to do so myself.

I thought that it would take a moderator or a [H]ard|OCP employee to take this to the next level, but I hadn't seen a volunteer, and would not assume that I could do so by myself. I do know a local screen printer, they have been a customer of mine in the recent past, and could probably get couple of proposed designs printed if the approval went forward. It seems, however, that much of the leg work for t-shirt and logo design has already been made in a previous thread, so is it just Kyle's approval we'd need to go forward? If so, is there a moderator or employee watching this thread that could bring the proposal to him? And if so, please relay the idea for a DC committee. If one is required to make decisions for this purpose or on his behalf, wouldn't he be the one to say so?

Pocatello, can you find out what [H]-related stuff we can and can't use for a DC team t-shirt?

This was my attempt at having a mod do exactly this. I have no access to Kyle beyond what ever other forum member has.

I will bring this up to Kyle.

Just as musky pointed out, anyone can contact Kyle through the forums here at Hard Forum.com. But I can be our point of contact to reference this thread to Kyle and get permission.

Just so ya'll know... the two t-shirts that I own with the FA[H] logo were not official or approved. Things were handled rather loosely way back when I got my shirts.

I like the idea of a committee to handle some things discussed in this thread, but we don't need/require a committee to present a t-shirt idea to Kyle.

I think we need the following before presenting our t-shirt reward idea to Kyle:

  • graphic design
  • purpose and intent
  • promise to use the t-shirt to promote the website and DC'ing in a positive way
Anything else?

Graphic Design

I have some ideas. i would like the actual [H]ard|OCP graphic to use in the logo - something like this on the front pocket area, centered up with some different font for Team:

Team
[H]ard|OCP
Distributed Computing
www.hard-dc.com

If I have the right font, I'd like to do "[H]ard for [H]umanity" or "Home of the [H]orde" or something on the back. Black shirts, red graphics

This is just my idea though. I think we would want to use the HardOCP logo in some way, and the [H] is the H in various words. Hard|OCP has the registered trademark symbol, and I have no idea on [H]. That is the concern - I assume this use case would be fine since the team represents the site to some extent. I just want to make sure.

Purpose and Intent

Swag for the H DC team - shirts for sale at cost, maybe Hard DCer monthly rewards or other contest rewards. Once we have something more "official", we could put it on anything really - as long as we don't violate the next point... :)

Promise to use the t-shirt to promote the website and DC'ing in a positive way

Of course.

Pull me in to any conversation if you would like. Also note that we are not asking for money or anything - just permission. We may try to raise a little money for the team to cover reward swag as a break-even thing.

And on a side note, I just registered hard-dc.com and hard-dc.me today and I am trying to get them to redirect to the DC forum main page. I would like to use one of them (probably hard-dc.com) in the design.

I'd like to be able to wear this in public. I think [H]ard for [H]umanity has the opportunity to be misinterpreted and giggled at by many. I'm all for [H]ome of the [H]orde or something to that effect, but would that exclude our other DC groups? The [H]orde has been historically just the group for F@H. I'd love to extend that to include all groups folding for [H] and make every DCer officially part of the [H]orde. Any objections to that idea?

Musky, looks like the redirect is working fine. I do think the domain is appropriate and project-agnostic, which is great. Thanks for taking the initiative on that. I think the group appreciates it.

Or, we could start over on a saying/motto/whatever you want to call it. These two are just ones that have been around for quite literally decades. I am not in love with either of them, and your points are exactly correct. Unfortunately, about anything containing "[H]ard" could be misinterpreted, so maybe we leave out any mention of that. Since we all are supposed to be running both WCG and F@H, I'm fine with "the [H]orde" referencing to the whole DC team. I think I saw "The [H]orde Cometh..." somewhere, maybe even on a t-shirt... :). The problem with "horde" is that it has WoW ties, even though our use of it pre-dates WoW by many years. I'm fine with that, though.

So, I don't really have a great idea for the back (or the front for that matter), and was just rehashing old stuff about the team.

EDIT: It was this shirt that someone had made a while ago:

Team 33 [H] DC T Shirts

FYI, I am getting a "sample" of the cheaper t-shirt from VistaPrint (my brother's fishing club had some made, so I am buying one from them.) They look like one of the cheaper ways to go for low quantities, and at least their hats are really nice.

I personally don't care if it refers to the Horde if the team is going to finally adopt other projects like WCG. I think the only way to really make the team feel whole again is to stop putting up virtual walls. Many of our members now run multiple projects at the same time. So, there really isn't a "DC Commando" any more.

As far as I am concerned, our "official" recommendation now is WCG for CPUs and F@H for GPUs. I don't think we can ever be as diverse as you like to be and still be a team pushing towards a goal. So, is F@H + WCG a good-enough compromise for you, Mr. Commando?

I'm fine with that on a T-shirt. That is what I'm saying. You can't advertise the diversity without just making it a title that covers the diversity. So, just call everyone the same thing and you are done. Easy peasy.

Let me see here, at this point we have a pretty good idea for the front of the shirt based on Musky's post back in September.

The sticking point is a slogan for the back? I'll toss these two into the mix

"Computing [H]ard for [H]umanity" (based on the old slogan with less giggle factor)

"Computing [H]ard for a Cause" (vague enough?)

I don't see a need to specifically advertise projects on the shirts, we need to get people aware of Distributed Computing and direct them to the [H] DC Community.

The sticking point is getting the actual Hard|OCP logo and permission to use it - which has been the sticking point for 3+ years.

September 28:
I will bring this up to Kyle.

Still nothing.

I don't understand why this is so long in the making. Can branding laws really be this tight ?

Did we settle on a graphic design?

Kyle approved the plan... so far.

We were not shot down.

This takes so long because we are volunteers, we have jobs IRL, familys IRL, and other pressing issues.

You don't need to remind me of the sacrifice. I was big into this a long time ago. I was under the impression that there were hurdles of branding or that there might be an issue on folks agreeing on a design.

Here is my proposal. I goofed up the font and formatting musky used but this is the general idea.

Front pocket:

Team
[H]ard|OCP
Distributed Computing

Back:

Computing [H]ard for a Cause
www.hard-dc.com

Musky, I love it. It brings attention to the logo first, and then makes the user focus to read the text in the other font. It's something that if you wear in public, would spark a conversation. That's the kind of conversation I'd love to start with people. Thank you for submitting that.

tjmagneto, I also like the idea of having a message on the back. I'm not sure how much more expensive shirts are to print on both sides, but if it's a small percentage or negligible I don't see why not. Keep the conversation going, guys, you've got some great ideas.

Pocatello, thank you for following up. I think we all know how our every day lives can get in the way of things we want to accomplish. It means a lot to me, and the other users here, that this idea comes to fruition. Thank you.

Popping out of lurk mode to say, very cool idea (and to remind to check later).

Kyle said that anything with the [H] in it is typically Arial Black font.

What font is the H logo?

My last one used Arial Black for the [H]ard|OCP and web address, and Forte for "Team" and "Distributed Computing", with everything bold if memory serves. I am actually stuck at needing high resolution fonts - Word just doesn't cut it with t-shirt graphics-sized fonts.

I also like the [H]|DC concept as a team identifier, and the "Live [H]ard, Crunch [H]ard" motto that Mullet came up with - we just need it in a single red color.

Actually Gilthanis came up with the idea and logo he just asked if I could help. Lets get this done!

How big you need it? Black background? Let me know.

mullet, again thanks for your help. We've tossed this idea around for years and really need to get it finished. :)

It will go on a t-shirt initially. Solid red would work on black or white or several other colors. I was thinking full front or breast pocket, so being able to scale would be good - plus it would let us use it on other stuff if we wanted to.

The more stylized version you have now could be used if we ever set up a real website at hard-dc.com.

Thanks, mullet!

I made them both in PNG so they are transparent. If the print shop for the t-shirts needs a different format let me know.

I supplied a single graphic. Then I got asked about changing it.

If it has a bracketed H on it, it must have a registered trademark symbol on it... The circle R symbol.

Holy shit this is still a thing? My old [H] shirts are kinda getting worn out, wouldn't mind getting another one for the team even tho I've only done like a dozen days of folding this year lol

Seconded! BTW, watercooled 1080 should be in my mailbox right now...

If you use a bracketed H, it must have a registered trademark symbol on it. I am not sure how much clearer can be on this.

The registered trademark symbol has to be on the bracketed H, not on the DC. It can be tiny as well so as not to impact the design.

So then each [H] gets a ®=3 would be required for the logo.

Edit, I redid them both. let me know if you need anything else.

Yes, I think that little R covers the trademark issue. I actually prefer the 2nd of the two graphics that were posted

As I understand it, we would need a circle R for each of the [H]'s in LIVE [H]ARD, CRUNCH [H]ARD as well - or get rid of the brackets like mullet originally had it. I personally vote to get rid of all of the bracket H's at this point and don't use anything trademarked to HardOCP.

Nathan, I assume you mean you liked the multi-color design, which is fine. The single color one is to cut down t-shirt costs.
