Feds To Announce Long-Awaited Guidelines For Self-Driving Cars

Earlier today, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx announced guidelines to regulating self-driving cars. The NHTSA has come up with a fifteen point safety assessment for manufacturers that are developing automated vehicles. The guidelines cover stuff like data recording and sharing and vehicle cybersecurity.

Self-driving cars have the potential to save thousands of lives lost on the nation’s roads each year and to change the lives of the elderly and the disabled, President Barack Obama said in an op-ed published Monday by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Safer, more accessible driving. Less congested, less polluted roads. That’s what harnessing technology for good can look like,” Obama wrote. But he added: “We have to get it right. Americans deserve to know they’ll be safe today even as we develop and deploy the technologies of tomorrow.”

Robots are just kids (learning to walk, climb walls, drive).
Give them a few more years to get up to speed (using guns, building bombs, driving under the influence)
 
I do really wish they'd stop saying the self driving cars could save lives. Lots of things could, but as of right now, the self driving car algorithm is racking up an at fault accident every ~98k miles. The humans are at an average of an accident, at fault or not of about every 110k miles. That's the google car anyway, they are the only one I know releasing any kinds of stats to the public. If you throw in all accidents where the google car was under the algorithm's control, at fault or not, the gap widens, and that algorithm has been opted out of shitty streets, fog, heavy rain, snow, etc. The human population has not.

Sure, they could save lives someday. Likely not if you are tryign to push the product to market to beat out regulatory restrictions. They aren't fully cooked yet.

Then there's the traffic thing. They COULD reduce traffic congestion.

IF they didn't have human drivers to contend with. They will have to slow for that congestion like everyone else.

IF the roads aren't beyond capacity. They can have all the algorithms in the world, but if they have to stop at lights that back up due to capacity limitations, they are jsut as fucked as people in the same situations.

IF the various manufacturers agree on a set of communications and algorithms for dealing with congestion, they might be able to cooperate, but no such standards exist.

They COULD cut down on fuel consumption

IF you only make fuel efficient ones.

IF you get them to do things like form car trains and draft each other.

IF varying ages and performance envelopes permit such without expanding road capacity.
 
Why are they pushing self driving vehicles so hard? Answer: So they can finally screw all of the remaining American truck drivers
