NVIDIA Announces The New Titan X

That NVIDIA has the ability to release a gaming version of the P100 but they won't. I think in reality the difference in die size between GP102 and P100 simply comes down to transistors that would not benefit gaming applications in the least. I have no doubt that there will be a GP100, but it's not going to be what people expect it to be ("full" P100 die with HBM2).

780 Ti to Mitan X was only around a 30% gain. Mitan X to Pitan X is around 70%. I saw a 65% increase, myself, in Rise of the Tomb Raider using the same settings.

Are you sure on the 780ti to Mitan X? I had both and my Firestrike went from 10k to 15k, my FPS similarly.

TPU shows 44% and I compare OC to OC, so maybe that's why I had 50-60% in my mind.

I only had a regular 780, so I have no personal experience with that one. Just estimating a summary of the game benchmarks I've seen. The difference in Firestrike is usually lower compared to games in my experience. In Firestrike Ultra my score only increased 44% from Mitan (5000) to Pitan (7200) compared to the 60-70% I see in games. Going by the [H] review of Mitan, it averaged 32% faster at 1440p and 33% faster at 4K than a GTX 980.

I genuinely don't think there is much about GP100 that would make it a better gaming card than GP102. Maybe, but there is a lot of tech used in the professional world that doesn't help gaming, it just eats up die space for no benefit. If NVIDIA went to the expense of designing GP102, then my guess was that it was to trim the fat and make the chip cheaper to produce for the gaming market.

As has already been discussed, HBM doesn't look like it would bring a lot to the table versus GDDR5X for GP102. Maybe (probably?) on consumer level Volta.

Current Titan X maybe the next 1080Ti - that is if Nvidia uses that skew, why would they release a Ti (any other Ti's this generation?) In other words for the market segment the Titan XP replaces the 980Ti with a rather big price hike to go along with it (think of it as a Founders Titan exclusive) and Nvidia will be accumulating fully functional GP102's as time goes on. Christmas time - Black Christmas or is that Black Friday? Just before Vega is Launched? Price reductions?

Nvidia has a number of cards still left to play and if they can release Volta early why not play them is what I think.

No more sauna :)

But besides reducing fan noise, seems like water cooling the Titan XP won't gain much in the O/C department... right?
 
If AMD releases anything even slightly competitive to Nvidia's 1070/1080 GPU's, then perhaps they'll cough up something before Volta, but for the foreseeable future, I'm thinking they'll just continue milking their current line-up. They simple have no competition right now in the high end of the market. They also have to be doing well selling there top tier product direct without any middlemen... Would LOVE to see a EVGA Classified version of the Titan XP with an optional alternative/unlocked OC BIOS and beefed up power delivery circuitry, but that doesn't look like it is going to happen in this universe.

It might not help getting a higher O/C, but it will help your card keep a consistent clock.
 
AMD Vega is a true next generation product for AMD. Nvidia slipped in Pascal to a rather big hole that AMD has between the high end skews. Nvidia told the world Pascal will be HBM2. HBM2 had it's time schedule pretty well dictated and AMD committed to HBM left that rather big hole open for Nvidia to take with a nice white lie (sorta dealing with Pascal Arch). I don't think AMD saw Pascal fully coming. Anyways Nvidia maybe rushing out stuff now because they can sell it high and with larger volumes before real competition takes place. Now if AMD can get out Vega early is the only play I see AMD can take to prevent a totally dominated high end from Nvidia (wait - they have that now).

I do expect a fully functional GP102 card either with faster memory (more likely), maybe with a wider bus ->512bit. Titan ? Maybe even called TTI (Titan Ti or Pie I) :p

This was what I was thinking.

Black when the first Titan released, it wasn't a fully enabled chip, it had one part of its chip disabled, and then sold GTX 780 (an further cut down of the GK110 chip) for $650. When 290X dropped, 780ti promptly came out (which, from the specs, it's roughly a half VRAM version of the original Titan), then later came out with a fully enabled GK110, the Titan Black.

If they are going to the same here, I'd be willing to bet that 1080ti will hit when/if Titan XP sales starts to dwindle and/or Vega being a literal bombshell hit (as in it can compete against Titan XP at 1080 prices for example), and 1080ti will probably be a further cut down version of Titan XP (either by cores or VRAM, former being more likely), and a Titan X Black to come out afterwards.

The problem with that theory is that if Volta is due out in 2017, that lineup will have a VERY cramped schedule, Titan Black came out a year after OG Titan.

Right now though, all of the cards (pun intended) in nVidia's hands, they have not just 1, but 2 card advantage (1080 and Titan XP), so they can react to whatever AMD does and one up them while they are at it.
 
I got the EK water block installed on my Titan XP. O/C seems to be the same as everyone else has experienced, sitting at 2062 boost clock (+200), but that is without any voltage adjustment - just raised the power limit to 120%.
The memory O/C is a little harder to get a grip on - does it even help? I left it at +350.

One thing I noticed with the EK water block, it doesn't seem to cover all the parts that the OEM cooler did, leaving out the small 'pieces' next to the memory chips.
The back plate had a pad on a small chip, I wonder what that one is for?

that pad on that small chip fell off of mine during my install of my hybrid. If you can locate where it went that would help me as well!

If you look at the back of the OEM back plate (there's a cutout), you can estimate where it should be on the card.
It's the little yellow chip at the top left in the picture.

Thanks, I hate to have to fight with those tiny screws again to pull off the back plate, but better safte than sorry.
 
On the EK back plate that chip does not have a pad... look at the pic where they put the pads.

Looks like the back plate has 3 small pads around the center just to prevent the plate from touching the back of the card so it don't ground out.

Yea, it's good. Hey, I got a question for you spine. In AB, there's an option in the OSD for "Power Limit" and the data line is only a 1 or 0. Can you track yours to see if it every lights up? When it flashes like in a bench or a game, I assume it means its throttling. I noticed that with the clu on the shunts the card was still lighting that option up in benches and games even though it read the "Power %" lower by 15-20%.

Let me know what you notice. I haven't been able to test much because my system just lost a dram stick and I'm down to one stick yikes. Thanks.

Just run a bunch of stuff and nothing except the very start of Firestrike Extreme causes the power limit to hit 1 at all. Valley benchmark didn't hit it, and several hours of Guild wars 2 and GTA 5 didn't either.

What were you expecting?

It seems like with mine, even with fans turned up to max on my custom water loop, core temp not going above 31C and as much voltage as I can currently throw at it, absolutely nothing makes it stable above 2063Mhz.

I can get it to start a Heaven benchmark with +180 on the core, if I do +100% on the voltage. If I do, it hits 2088Mhz for a few seconds before starting to stutter and freeze.

I'm kind of bummed, but it appears that I totally lost the silicone lottery, and my first water cooling build isn't helping me one little bit compared to 100% fan on the stock cooler (well, it certainly is quieter)

No worries man.. it's not like I've noticed my 1080s overclocked helping benches any over 2000mhz.

What you can do is test different clocks to see which one gives you the best performance and it's not always the fastest clock!

Make sure to test with the memory at defaults.. that can rob your core clock. Once you find the sweet spot then try to up the ram a 100 at a time till you see issues like artifacts and flashing.

Yes I've benched my 1080 at 2190 but 2114 was faster.

I'm sure it throttled on air at some point watercooling is letting you sustain those clocks. Enjoy your fourteen trillion floating point operations per second you ingrate :p
 
Here's some thoughts after spending more than a month with a waterblocked Titan.

You know living with this titan has been easy. I went from 3 fire breathing 290x lightnings before and learned to live with them. They had to be fed the right amount of finesse, you had to know how to tame them for everyday use which I'd gotten pretty good at. Good enough to write a guide even. In games though, more often than not shit just didn't work, so you get savvy playing with profiles and such. From time to time even games that supposedly supported sli/cfx great, sucked. Driver to driver, patch to patch issues always crop up. And there is only so much AOTS one man can play just to see his gpus light up with usage. It was a way of life, and I was ok with it lol. Who knew any better? I had the whole time been waiting for the one freaking card to rule them all. I thought I could wait till Vegans dropped or Volta but I'd been waiting forever and a half. Then TXP came and dammit NV, it was even more expensive than the last one. In retrospect I spent more than that for 3 lightnings lmao, so I can't complain and go there either.

Now that I've switched, it is so nice to just fire up any game and lay waste to it, not worry about whatever settings are, max it to ultra and it just runs. From indie games to AAA games, my life has gotten easier. I've downsized my radiator sizing from 2160mm to 960mm, and now all my rads fit inside my case lol. That means a lot less plumbing, less complication, a whole psu less, lol. I didn't realize how big of a monstrosity my rig was before with triple 290x lightnings. I even had quad lightnings before selling one off way back. The 4th was just dead weight gaming and I'd gotten over benching. I can afford to pay the power bill, but I was floored at how low my power draw is now. It's sickening what I was drawing before in comparison, though to be fair I was also using a 3930k vs a 6700k now.

Yea the TXP is a lot of cash, but for my the reduction in maintenance and complexity that got in the way of actually gaming, the price was worth it for me.

Is getting rid of the stock cooling almost a requirement? What can I truly expect from the stock cooler? I can deal with noise but I'm not too keen on the idea of the card getting too hot and lowering clock speed in game.

This was a bit of an impulse buy, I've never replaced a GPU stock cooling with aftermarket and the idea of doing this on the most expensive GPU I've ever purchased makes me nervous.

If you're not already in watercooling, it can be a huge endeavor. You only need to upgrade the cooling if you're looking to run a high overclock 24/7. I would run it with the stock cooler at first just to see if you need to run it overclocked. It's already pretty darn fast as it is. Balance the the overclock vs noise, and you may find you are ok with it as is.

Mine tops out around 65-70C while playing Forza Horizon 3 with the core running at about 2 GHz and the fan running around 70%. I don't notice the fan noise over the sound of the game. It will reach 79C in DX:MD and RotTR, though, and the Boost clock will settle a little lower at around 1950 MHz. But I'm really thinking at this point that water cooling won't be necessary for this card in my situation once I replace my PC case.
 
Thanks for the replies! I'll run with it stock for a month or so and evaluate after.

I would not be interested in a full water cooling loop for both CPU and GPU, so an AIO solution for the GPU would be the only thing I'd really consider.

You are unlikely to gain much in the max clock department due to the limited voltage tweakability and 120% power limit.

You will however gain clock stability. In other words, your max clocks will not drop as you warm up (unless you do something wrong)

With my Titan (which admittedly is a pretty poor overclocker) I went from 65C with 100% fans on the stock cooler, running at a stable 1986Mhz to 32C stable at 2063Mhz.

The latter is also much much quieter :p

When the SKU for GTX1080/GTX1070 was revealed to be named GP104...EVERY single tech enthusiast should know that a bigger SKU was comming later...I am surprised that you didn't have a clue...really!

Everyone knew a new Titan was likely to come later.

The question is how much later. I was expecting 6-8 months after the 1080 launch, not one month.

You can use an Arctic Accelero extreme, no need for water, will be whisper quiet
