MSI has built deep relationships with the VIVE team of HTC Corporation for quite a long time, determines to deliver and promote the best VR experience on the mobile platform. In Tokyo Game Show 2016, MSI and HTC VIVE team shall bring to light another MSI revolutionary product to the world, the MSI VR One! In Tokyo Game Show 2016, MSI will announce the world’s first-ever VR Backpack, the “VR One”. The concept has been discussed since 2016, however, none but MSI was able to make the actual product happen with the fancy style and lightest weight but highest performance.

MSI VR One is the world’s lightest and thinnest backpack PC system. It is sure to have massive impacts on the global VR market by removing the current VR experience limitations of having to stay close to the PC and the monitor due to cables connected. MSI VR One weighs merely 3.6kg. It comes with 2 battery packs and is able to deliver 1.5 hours full speed gameplay. Powered by overclocked CPU and GeForce ® GTX 10 series graphics card, MSI VR One is able to deliver full throttle gaming performance under noise of 40dBA.

Love MSI hardware -- and I have to admit, this looks cool as hell. *but* the first thought after "wow awesome" is... how much does it weigh? Would suck having to strap on a massive UPS size worth of batteries.

Imagine your workout from any gaming would be amplified 1.5X too with that extra weight.

3.6 kg or a hair under 8 pounds

I didn't know there was even a market for this. They thought Pokémon Go had issues with people not paying attention. Looks like they have some competition.

I don't see a market for this. 1.5 hours only @ 8 pounds? Self contained PC for the Vive is definitely is not the solution for wireless IMHO.

Wrong solution to the problem.
It's the next logical step towards human-computer integration. It's mostly older people who have an issue with this, but even they have mini computers in their pockets 24/7 so they can't make much of an argument against it now can they?

You can be against it if you feel it's too bulky, expensive, heavy, ugly, etc... but trying to transmit video data wirelessly seems to me more expensive/harmful in the long run, especially as resolution needed for good VR will likely be in the 16k or higher territory. No way people will wait for that to happen over WiFi. An 8 lbs backpack, if priced reasonably, that can also serve as a desktop PC or more, could gain a considerable amount of users, at least in the meantime...

FYI as some of you may've not read it:

The 2 battaries are hot-swappable so you can play for more than 1.5 hours.

Still would have to stop in the middle of the game to swap out the batteries, not something most of us gamers are used to. But of course, using this would introduce something most of us gamers are not used to anyway - physical exertion!

Now the question becomes - what is the maximum range of the lighthouses? Room scale, fuck that - YARD scale.

Why would wireless video be harmful or expensive?
Why would you want to use wifi? Because it's a free band?
A satellite signal can hold dozens of 4k channels. I'm fairly sure someone can come up with some high frequency local transmission for wireless hdmi that fits the needs of vr.

Max official range is the Lighthouses being 15 feet apart, so whatever that is in a rectangular sense. But I've heard of people doing more and having it still work okay.

Outdoors doesn't work too well due to the IR interference from the sun.

As for the backpack PC...looks cool, interesting idea but I'd rather just have the cord as opposed to a decently heavy, presumably hot backpack. I got a 3D printed cable belt clip for the Vive cable and that works pretty darn well for keeping the cable behind you.

The backpack should house a small battery that powers the headset and a wireless connection to the PC. Putting the PC in the backpack is beyond stupid.

If I already didn't have a 5960x / 1080 this might be interesting? I like the idea of transmitting the signal instead.

Wireless video transmission is spotty at best.... trying to get perfectly synced, zero lag, two separate streams for each eye @ 90fps -- all wirelessly? yeah that's not happening for a while I'd wager.

Heat would be my concern with the backpack. It would need a pretty decent cooling solution to keep the wearer from feeling like they have a heater on their back.

For me the weight isn't a big deal but the heat would be a no go. My office already gets warm with a PC on the floor. I couldn't imagine it on my back.

As every other vive owner has said, HTC with/without MSI's help would be better served coming up with a wireless solution or possibly dropping it to one wire (power). I know my 6 year old would love a single wire.

Well HTC does already make a single-wire cable as a replacement for the triple-cable. Problem is you can't really guarantee that you'll get one if you order a replacement right now...

But it does exist: New Thinner, Lighter HTC Vive 3-in-1 Cable Spotted in the Wild - Road to VR

Imagine with something like this if "room scale" wasn't just a 5x5...but rather 50x50? You could now make a very generic room with objects that are now textured but people believe they are there...can move up against them..because they are! Something like a FPS would be amazing in a room like this. The future is awesome! Would wanna play COD..fine. You wanna jump in a tank..FINE! You wanna pilot that mech of aweosme...FINE! The room just needs to made such that the users is moved by his own choices to areas which have physical objects that relate to what he/she sees. You can warp their sense of space and thus allow to people to be side by side but believe they are a mile apart.

I know... think of the sex parties you could have....

Swapping batteries actually isn't anything new for console gamers. Having to swap out batteries or swapping out controllers has been happening for years. I use one controller, while my other controller is charging.

They could integrate it into the game... like "Oh no, captain, the plasma energy containment system needs refilling or your local life-support system will fail. Get to the exchange bay immediately!" Then they have the batteries tracked in-game and you do it all in VR...

not going to happen, yea... but some sorta "in-game" swap-out might be possible, even if it pauses the game and lets you see what you're doing without having to take the HMD off...

I asked for one for review. Got told later this year...

I guess with the backpack on you can run full throttled being blinded by the HMD :D. Now what is worst, pulling less than 1 lb of cables or lugging a backpack on your back for a small space VR environment? Now if someone has a rather large open space (A/C cooled 3 car garage which is totally emptied and devoid of anything - unlikely) then I can see this being cool. For large participation as in an auditorium or something like that everyone can watch that one person run around having fun ;). Of course some folks have large rooms that remain empty all the time or could dedicate one room for this, I have a 12' x 12' and a 12' x 14' area that probably could be used but I would just stick with better cable management for the home.

By far I see this being a better solution for more folks and takes up way less space:

Kyle have you asked to see if you can review?

looks like a prototype that didn't make it,
i don't find it cool at all, but if there is interest maybe it will pave the way to something better

Why not just rig a nice gaming laptop to some webbing and call it good? It would surely be cheaper.
