My brother recently upgraded his PC after his motherboard died and gave me a box of junk he had left over. I found several processors including an FX-8350 and FX-9590.

Anyway, I was going to get a motherboard and try to overclock the pants off those CPU's just for funsies. Does anyone have a suggestion on what board I should get? I've been out of the loop on AMD tech since I scrapped my old Phenom years ago.

I was looking at a Crosshair V Formula-Z but the $210 price tag seems a little steep for a board that is on a socket as old as AM3+.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. :D

sabertooth 990fx is usually the next logical step. my sabertooth had my 9370@5ghz for three years before burning out. i recently got a gigabyte 990fx ud3 r5 board on the cheap as a replacement so we'll see it it can sustain that kind of overclock. you'll need some sort of vreg cooling to be able to run 5ghz 24/7.

Thanks for the reply. I was browsing Newegg and saw an open-box Crosshair V for $175. They also have a 990FX Sabertooth Rev2 for $153 open box. That seems like a steal. I've got cables and screws and such coming out my ears so I don't care if that stuff is missing from the open box. Kinda hope it has an IO plate but for $153 I won't complain. I might go for that then. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

if you 're looking for the bleeding edge of an overclock with conventional methods (i.e. liquid) the ch-v is the one to go with as it is the only board to have two 8 pin eps plugs to feed power to the cpu. that being said if you're just looking for 24/7 5ghz the sabertooth is a great part.

if the op scoffs at the $220 price tag of a ch-v then i don't see a $200 sabertooth as a likely alternative. truthfully op, i went with a gigabyte board to revive my 9370 because gigabyte rma has never failed me, while asus rma has burned me a few times.

if you can get an asus part at a decent price, i'd go for it as their engineering is top notch, but i don't trust their rma dept for the long run.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It's been a long time since I've shopped parts for a Team Red build. I browsed around the web and checked out benchmarks to see what kind of hardware reviewers were suggesting but there's nothing like advice from folks who have long term experience with these boards.

Normally I wouldn't scoff at the price but this is mostly just going to be a toy to tweak for fun. I've pretty much gotten everything I can out of my gaming rig based on the Maximus VIII Hero as well as my workstation based on the EVGA X99 Classified and I have an itch to play with something different. I've had some mixed experiences with Asus products myself in the past. My Maximus VIII Hero and the Maximus IV Extreme I had in the past both worked flawlessly. I had a Maximus VIII Extreme that failed in a quite spectacular fashion though (have you ever seen a spark shoot up the PCI-e power traces? I hadn't either until that board failed.) I'll definitely give the Gigabyte board a look.

Why not get the new Asus Sabertooth R3.0 which has USB 3.1 and a M.2 slot? Newegg has it for $199. Looks like the best modern AM3+ motherboard out there. I only had one open box board bad from NewEgg out of many so you can save a few bucks but I don't think those savings are that great in this case.

ASUS TUF TUF SABERTOOTH 990FX R3.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX/SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Motherboards - AMD - Newegg.com

I'm glad you said something. I had looked at that board briefly and then saw the open-box model suggested. I hadn't looked at the open-box listing in depth yet and didn't even notice they were two different revisions.

Yep, just released from Asus which actually seems kinda strange since AM3+ is basically EOL. Still that looks like the best most modern mobo for the FX line. Now if just tinkering around you might be able to get a used board off of Ebay for dirt cheap as well. Now if you are willing to spend around $150+ then maybe going all the way out at $199 is a good option, that is if you plan on sticking a PCIe Express SSD in the M2 slot, use that USB 3.1 etc.

I'll take a look at the Gigabyte board that was mentioned then make a decision. A friend of mine is looking for a cheap set up for his son and he said he might buy this from me when I finish playing with it. He'd probably rather I get the Sabertooth in case there are any upgrades he may want to make. I plan to see just what I can get out of the 8350 and 9590 chips I have and then let him know how they clock so he can decided which he would rather have once I'm finished having fun with them.

I would say go with this:

GIGABYTE GA-990FX-Gaming AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard - Newegg.com

relatively cheap and GB has been my go-to for years. great warranty service IF you ever even have to use it. I'm running an old 2011-2012ish 990xa-ud3 and haven't had a single issue with it. been overclocked from day one, no instability, no signs of heat-wear on the board, caps are all still perfect and it has dual bios just in case. keep in mind that you'll need a 990fx based board for the 9590 and a GOOD/HUGE hsf or aio, its a 220w chip vs the 8350's 125w!

edit: corrected 8350 wattage, thought it was 95w

I didn't even know that motherboard existed - it has both the M2 and USB 3.1 and will support the 9590. That may be a better buy than the Asus. While I like Asus better than Gigabyte, they are usually pretty solid.

I didn't either until I looked last night, they snuck it out! heard about the new asus and msi but nothing about a gb. weird...
but I do think this is probably the best bang for buck option without looking at old stock or used.

It is tempting for me to upgrade to the Gigabyte from my old Asus Sabertooth R1.0 board which does not officially support the 9590 but I am running it anyways.

I installed the board with no issues and did some quick overclocking. I set the ratio to 24 and vCore to 1.40v and the system ran at a perfectly stable 4.8Ghz. I'll do some fine tuning this weekend and see just how far the 8350 will go on that board. So far I've been impressed. Everything has been quick, easy, and smooth with that Gigabyte board.

EDIT: It was 1.43 vCore, I misspoke when I said 1.40v.

nice! what are you using for a cooler? I'm only able to get 4560(prefered for higher fsb) or 4600 @ 1.43v (+.100v in BIOS) out of my fx-8120 with a 212 evo. ive been wanting to upgrade my cpu cooling for a while now...

I'm using an older Koolance gold plated copper block that's rated at 300watts. It's attached to an older radiator rated at either 755 or 1055 watts (can't remember which and didn't bother looking up the model number.) It's kind of overkill for a single CPU cooling solution but at least it's quiet. :)

I've been very happy with my Asrock Fatality 990fx(cheaper one if there is still 2). Great board, been running years in first my gaming pc, then now my boys. Knock on wood, never any issues. DO put a fan over the VRMs tho.

I've had some issues with my health and that of my close family so I haven't had a chance to play with the machine much. I did manage to get the FX-8350 to 5.2Ghz though it wasn't even close to stable. it would get to the desk top but that's as far as it would go. I managed to get it to run through some stress testing at 5.0Ghz with a 1.5 vCore. 1.5 was a little high for regular use I thought so I just dropped it back to 4.8Ghz at 1.43 vCore. It seemed very stable and I didn't notice any issues. I bumped it up to 1.44 just in case and let it run some stress tests and then turned on F@H for 2 days and it never missed a beat.

I popped that old 9590 chip in the board as well. Sadly it was kind of a dog for overclocking. It ran fine at stock and I could get it to run nicely at 5.0Ghz. Anything higher and I couldn't get it stable and I really don't like the idea of going over 1.5 vCore, it's just a little too risky for me. The 9590 was the chip that was in my brother's PC when his motherboard failed. I don't know if that might have anything to do with it's inability to stabilize at a higher clock or not but whatever.

I put the FX-8350 back in there and left it at 4.8 Ghz and 1.44 vCore.

The Gigabyte board has been great. No issues to report there. I'm using a 256GB Samsung 950 M.2 for my boot drive and some Corsair Vengeance DDR3 I had laying around. Everything has worked together just fine with no issues. Seems like a very solid board. Thanks very much for the suggestion! :D

You must have got lucky. I need to pump a lot more voltage into my FX-8350 to get 4.6GHz stable on air. See my sig. But its been stable for 4+ years of heavy gaming and temps never exceeded 55 degrees on P95 testing. I asked Gigabyte max voltage and they said keep it under 1.55 volts.

yipes that's a lot of voltage!! I need 1.44v to get my 8120 stable, under load it goes up to 1.48v

I know, I was worried about degradation from all that voltage but so far so good! It's been rock solid! I actually use this system more than my Intel because of my games backlog and I also have everything running perfectly on it...

DO put a fan over the VRMs tho.

My GA-990FXA-UD3 version 1 has the cheapest VRM heatsink and in exceptional circumstances it will throttle. It's in a HAF-X case which pushes a lot of air through so its not as bad as could be. Typically, 5 degrees below the thermal threshold.

Whew, that is a lot of voltage. I will go up to 1.5 to see what I can get from a chip but I try not to leave it there. I try not to go higher than the low 1.4's for prolonged use with my chips.

On a side note if someone else is looking for a board I saw the Asus 970 Pro Gaming Aura for $90 after rebate on Amazon. It has USB 3.1 and an M.2 port just like the Gigabyte board but it's not using the 990FX chipset obviously. Still looks like a nice board for a budget system.

LOL that's with LLC set to high (to avoid vdroop) but honestly CPU-Z shows voltages in the 1.38-1.45 range most of the time. I rarely see it exceed that under heavy gaming.

Give me 2 or 3 weeks and my Crosshair Formula V and 8350 will be up here for less than some of the prices you are seeing for the MB alone. The V is a great stable board with lots of potential and tweaking.

It really is an awesome board, one of my favorites.
