Why can't companies like WhatsApp and Facebook get it through their thick skulls that, if people wanted to share their phone number with another site, we would do so ourselves. There are reasons (that are none of their business) why we share our phone number on one site but not another. Thanks for just taking care of that for us without asking. :(

"By connecting your phone number with Facebook's systems, Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them," reads an excerpt of WhatsApp's post. "For example, you might see an ad from a company you already work with, rather than one from someone you've never heard of."

I'd much rather them make Messenger and WhatsApp a single app. Next thing you know they'll go the Google route and have 5 different apps that attempt to do the same thing.

Now I remember why I don't use them both. Just kidding, I surely didn't forget!

Facebook owns them. I expect Facebook to meddle in their affairs. It is their nature to taint everything they can.

Once you understand fb's goals then nothing they do is really that surprising.

Whew, that quote just makes me want to smash someone's face in. "We want to share your number so we can shove more shitty ads down your throat...er...I mean...give you a better experience!". That is so damn condescending and demeaning when companies talk to their customers and users like they're all a bunch of infantile idiots. Yes, yes, I know, it's Facebook, but this is the same duplicitous bullshit so many other companies pull as well. I'm sick of these vultures treating us like we're all a bunch of stupid, naive children. Just one more reason I have to be thankful I never used Facebook or any other asinine "social" network.

The fact you can see through the curtain means you are not who they are targeting. The majority of people who use Facebook, or buy products from companies that pull this shit, don't realize or care the extent to which they are being manipulated. People are woefully naive.

Yea, just what everyone would want, the legitimate advertisers included. The whole point of ads is to get word out about stuff no one has heard of before, not to become billionairs off business trying to sell things. It's all a scam anyway as the ads they show tend to be for bullshit snake oil products. Sponsored content... it's all scam crap, not real advertising.

Why da fuq would I want to see ads from companies I work with? I already damn well know what we're about. Must be a China Communist feel happy about the overlords thing. So people aren't concerned about these two things marrying information?

Also got to ask yourself how would they match friends based on my phone number? What da fuq other shit are they mining to gain that information? One would imagine that you'd already be facebooking with people on your contacts lists anyway.

B2BigAl, couldn't agree more. I hate that term "user experience". Just means "shit we want to force on you for our user experience of our bank accounts".
