EVGA has step up, 24/7 tech support, advanced RMA and extended warranties (if you pay extra).

Asus doesn't, I'm fairly certain.

Other than that, the silicon lottery will determine the max OC more than anything else. Power connectors, extra VRMs... it doesn't matter with the 10 series.
 
my only "hmmmm" about EVGA are coil whine issues reported all over... Apparently Asus uses higher quality chokes to lesser the problem. I don't want to buy $$$ GPU and have to RMA it on the same day.... choices choices...
 
They'll be within 5% of each other overclocking-wise anyway, since AFAIK they're all binned chips.

And you can RMA the card for coil whine. Did you think you couldn't?

Just be aware that an aging and/or cheaply made PSU can cause excessive DC ripple which can induce coil whine in other components (such as a GPU).

I have a Corsair TX750, do you think it is decent? I guess I will deal with the problem if it happens.

From page 4 - "The TX750W does a really good job at being above average but it misses the boat on being awesome. The 12V ripple is a tad high and that 80mV whoopty do in test 6 kind of stop the awesomeness from happening. That and the less than stellar 3.3V regulation in the hotbox bring it down from a potential 10 to a well deserved 8.5."

All you can do is test it, and if you have coil whine it could be the PSU. Test with another PC or with a different PSU to verify before starting an endless RMA loop.

EDIT: I really trust JonnyGuru's PSU reviews - so if you ever need a new PSU, see if he (or someone who also does in depth testing) reviewed the models that you are interested in.

Thanks for the info and your sugestion. It doesn't sound too bad. I have 3 different modern PCs with PSU's I should be able to test the card in case there is a problem.
 
Went with the Strix myself. I think it's better hardware, better looks/RGB LEDs, better factory overclock, less likely to have coil whine issues...

I am really leaning towards the fact that both cards are highly unlikely to die, and I'd rather have the better card.

Despite ASUS' legendary RMA reputation, I went with it anyway. I've had many ASUS components with only one failure. I'll take those odds. (y)
 
I chose the FTW. Never owned an asus GPU but love their Motherboards. I am sure you wont even notice a difference.
 
A couple more days to make very hard decision lol first world problems lol. In Canada EVGA warranty is not as good as in US. I cannot get an advanced RMA which includes cover costs for cross shipping. Asus on the other hand has depot in my provide Ontario. So in long run warranty would be cheaper with Asus. I only had once problem with gpu in my life with xfx 8800gt, I had to cover shipping one way to California... But kudos to xfx it was painless other than costs.

I currently own asus gtx 670, solid build and no issues in the last 3 years.

I've read on another forum one user reported Asus strix (non-oc) using micron memory, however the place I would be buying from I would have 14 days to return it... No questions asked. For evga ftw I would get 30 days warranty.

For build I like asus 3 fans, 4 heat pipes, extra fan outputs. However I do not like thermal pads for vram. Therefore I would give EVGA card an edge. My haf 922 case is closed so RGB blings are not big issue and both GPUs can be set to red. Evga cards have some reports of coil whine, but both local retailer and evga said they would help in case I would try into an issue.

From my understanding there is no real advantage of 2x8 power on evga vs 1x8 power connector on asus. 10.2 vs 6.1 (if I'm not mistaken) power phases. All 1070 are power limited and all of them oc to 2000-2100 range, silicon lottery luck applies. Lol

So at the end I'm still flip flopping ;-(. Both seem like great GPUs and will be massive upgrades from my current gtx 670.

I want to buy 1070 to give my current rig [email protected], 16gb ram the last shot in the ram for the next 3-4 yesrs. After which I will build the new gaming rig from ground up including new gpu.

The ASUS 1070 I have in my sig has Samsung memory, if that affects your opinion at all.

From what I can tell, the "Micron is bad" info is coming from a specific batch of MSI Gaming X 1070 cards made in China and sold in parts of Asia. All of those cards were using Micron.

I was gonna steer you towards evga or giga g1 over the asus but you already did it. Grats on the new card.
 
EVGA might have a not bad support, but their cooling solution was always not good when it comes to noise and sometimes temps as well.

The cooling on the GTX 1080 FTW works very well from my experience.

ACX 3.0 is excellent cooler. My card may just hit 1000 RPM while under 100% constant load. While gaming with vsync it's basically <900 RPM. Basically silent and my HDDs probably make more noise. It's one of the quietest coolers out there according to reviews too. This thing is actually quieter under full load than my old Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 on idle. That windforce cooler is crap like the similar version on these new cards too.

Maybe they improved, but I doubt. Too many evga brand fans here. ACX 2.0 was definitely a disaster. I returned my 1080 ACX as well because of noise. There's no windforce on giga btw, but it was actually much better than acx. However the Xtreme model cooler is a pure masterpiece.
 
I concur that EVGA's cooling is just average, and that's coming from a current EVGA owner.

They're some of the quietest fans this generation (ACX 3.0) but the GPUs also consistently run hotter, showing that they optimized their default fan profiles for noise rather than temps this time around.

Also, size matters-- the FTW closes the gap with other brands because its fans (and PCB) are bigger; the regular models use reference PCB.

And it sucks. I really have no idea what made the noise in your case but my GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 is quietest card that I have ever had (in terms of coil whine too).

With the recent reports of evga ftw shipping with micron ram I cancelled my order. I might take chance with asus strix oc... Or zotac extreme amp...all same $$$.
 
my 1070 FTW seems just fine, full on load it will hit 66C at 2114/9036. I wrote off EVGA a long time ago, the Zotac Amp cards look awesome too, but I got my FTW on sale.

I have had to tweak settings but dropping the ram down dropped my temps quite a bit, I'm sitting under 60c now.
