No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

I finally played some more last night and I still like the game I do get hooked exploring the planet and trying to find stuff by just stumbling upon it. I really need to find an atlas pass because it's annoying seeing these things around I can't access. I finally got to see battle last night and it was interesting to finally get to use my guns for something other than mining. I wasn't thrilled about how you have to go into your inventory screen to recharge the shields though. It felt like a very clunky kind of interface especially when you are being shot at and can't maneuver while doing it.

Did you know some items can be stacked like the Carite Sheets and Microdensity Fabric? It's just you can't stack them after you make them yourself. The only time they are stacked is when you disassemble some equipment that returns you back multiple items. That is one serious design flaw IMHO. The inventory system needs a rework. I can understand how things like fascination beads and the cube things won't stack but come on now, if you disassemble something and it stacks then all those things even the ones you craft should stack. I finally found a shielding plate recipe but IMHO it's useless if you can't stack your crafted items.

So, before it was released, I was interested. Than I heard all the farce and lost interest. Now after watching it a bit, hearing my nephew praise it and a few other people, I guess I am finding myself getting to a point where.... while I wont pay FULL price, I might wait till its $40 or less.

There are a lot of people (including myself) in the same boat. And by the time it reaches that price point (there was already a 15% off sale on Green Man two days ago), the game will be much better than it was.

Wot I Think: No Man’s Sky

A PC version review. RPS usually calls things fair.

RPS is one of my 3-4 go-to trustworthy PC gaming review sites...like you said they are usually fair and balanced...

"This likely reads as an overwhelmingly negative review, and it’s deserved – No Man’s Sky is massively flawed, and systematically poorly designed. But it’s also a massive playground of potential and opportunity, and its sheer ambition, for all its massive stumbles, is rewarded in play"

and a follow up article from them about the early gameplay trailers that turned out to be a massive bait-and-switch...why this doesn't get more press is beyond me...it's along the same lines as Watch Dogs or Colonial Marines in terms of showing footage that was never in the game

There's a lot to be said about the stuff surrounding this game. And it's all fair too - the sheer hype, the missing features, the misleading advertising, small indie teams, bad PR management, and so on. There's the "don't pre-order" bit that gets trotted out every time something like this happens, but... I've got to say, things haven't gotten better yet. We're still in a world of shitty launches, crucial day one (or day zero even) patches, and poor PC support.

Latest patch today (bigger of the two) added explosions from your ship cannon as it hits land, just like the videos.. it seems like they really just needed another few months after all this Sony bullshit. It must have sucked a lot of their time getting it running on that POS judging by the amount of features they had to chop.

What's so evil about a day 1 patch? You have to download the game anyway the first day.

I didn't say it was evil, but there's the sense you always get an unfinished product.

And with a HUGE amount of releases these days, thats already a true statement. We dont get a full game on release much anymore. Its a beta products, than after work on it, its a complete game, we just have to wait to get it, thats why I rarely pre-order or support kick starters now. I want the final product.

Well, after todays latest patch, I have to click the shortcut 2-3 times to launch the game....

What the hell is going on here lol

Disabled steam overlay? When I re-enabled that, the game crashed yesterday from launch in steam menu (not even splash screen) until I closed/opened steam again. I'd been using it since release though but it seems to make things a little smoother.

I haven't played the PC version yet, and likely won't until there's a Steam sale and a few more Patches. However I've got about 70 hrs into the PS4 version, and I'm still enjoying the game.

I think the game will look much closer to the original intent after a year of patches and added content, but that's speculation on my part. HG seems to be all in on this one, and Sony seems eager to help it succeed.

Yeah, I'm hoping that will happen. It doesn't excuse the state the game was released in, but the core of the game is all there and seems to be ripe for growing into something with more depth.

Thank You!! DualShock 4 Buttons instead of XB360 Controller prompts FTW. :) I really don't know why this wasn't an option from the start given Sony is a backer of the game.

Because the DS4 isn't officially supported on the Windows Platform, maybe?

So I've been coordinating with a random player the last few days to try and meet. I saw one of his discovered solar systems were within 500 light years from my current position.
The plan was for him to back track and we try it at that specific system.
He figured out how to get back there. I've been docked around there for the last day.

We finally had the time to try and meet. We tried for a few hours at different locations in his solar system.
We landed at the space station, we saw nothing. We logged out and logged back in. Still saw nothing.
We decided to meet at the closest planet and found the same exact trading post. I still didn't see his ship, he still didn't see mine.
We decided to jump down off of the trading post. We picked two specific plants in a specific spot. We each were to destroy one. Neither of us saw any change to the environment around us. Neither of us saw any damage to said plant.
Both of us were in the same exact spot and blowing up everything around us to smithereens.

I did notice seeing animals at the same spot where he did. I'm not sure if the animals were doing the exact same thing at the exact same time as what he was seeing.

Additionally, I scanned one undiscovered animal and he scanned another. After waiting for about a minute we then scanned each others new discovered animal, yet each new discovered animal still said undiscovered on our screens.
This was a planet he said he only spent an hour on at best so he only had several discoveries there. So I checked my animal index and it did show on my screen one or two of his old discoveries. When we found those exact discoveries , it did say discovered by him. However, he said he had about 5 uploaded discoveries from when he previously explored there. I only saw 2 of his discoveries registered on my index.

As of right now with the games current status, saying there is any form of multiplayer is really stretching the term. I know it's been said, but I wanted to find out for my self.

You can meet up at the same location and basically blindly explore together. That's about it.

In regards to the servers registering our discoveries - I'm not really sure how long it takes for another person to see a specific creature/plant was discovered by someone else. Multiple players could theoretically be in the same spot and scan the same undiscovered animal/plant. The question would be then, who officially gets that discovery?

People have done packet captures. There is nothing happening besides the talk back for discoveries.

Maybe that was the thinking but it was a mistake on their part. They already had the resources created for the PS4 version and other indie devs have put it in as an option (like Rebel Galaxy) who weren't even associated with Sony in any manner. It really should have been there IMHO.

Yes, but then they have to provide technical support for a controller that's not officially supported and uses software not made by Sony to function.

Nah, no tech support necessary, it would be just like the ones that can show the Dual Shock button layouts now, an option under controller that has a check box called "use dual shock 4 button graphics". They aren't going to support the controller in a hardware sense or even change any controller code, they are just going to display the graphics for the dual shock buttons instead of the XB360 buttons on screen if that option is enabled. It would have taken them maybe 5 minutes to add it. But it doesn't really matter anymore since the mod will do it for us. ;)

When I plug in my Playstation 4 controller via USB and I get the correct button prompts with no mods. I'm on Windows 10 Anniversary so it may be a new supported Windows controller. I basically connected it and it installed without any extra steps in my part.

I have to say I prefer to play this game with a controller as melee boosting is murder in my hand with KB/M.

player base is falling fast...no surprise...I think most people saw this coming...those huge Day 1 Steam player numbers were inflated because it was just released plus with Steam's new return policy people were going to return it...like I said then, wait a month and lets see those numbers...

I've only done one refund through Steam and it was probably the easiest one I'll ever do. All it took was experiencing the terrible console/controller controls in the menus for me to be done with the game. 8 mins total play time.

You gave the game 8 minutes. How the hell can anyone get the controls down in any game, in 8 minutes?

I enjoyed the PS4 version, but sorely missed KBM during combat. I still plan to buy the PC version once on sale.

I think a lot of people will return to the game after updates. I'd go so far as to say the player base will be bigger in a year than it is right now.

Anyone have any idea what they're adding to the game this week?
Apparently they're adding something major, but nothing has been mentioned in detail.

Closer to $20 for me, but...same sentiment.

just sold my ps4 version for $50, makes it a $30 game for me instead of $80. Worth that price imo

Major fixes maybe, but no new content. Sean has made 2 comments on Twitter ( @nomanssky ) that I'm aware of; both alluded to the fact they are focused on fixes and optimizations right now, so they can start on the added content promised. This is a small team, literally 13 people before release, 15 since. It would be unrealistic to expect content this early.

Personally I'm fine with that. Listen to the feedback, get the game in a solid base state, then work on a couple of focused, thoroughly play-testing new features. Do that 3 to 4 times over the course of the next year and they will have a more successful game than many AAA titles imo.

Angry Joe ripped the SHIT out of this game and Sean Murray. Potential SPOILERS if you haven't seen the galactic center leak yet (hint: it's insultingly disappointing):
