It looks like Gawker has been sold to Univision for roughly the same amount the courts ordered it to pay Hulk Hogan earlier this year after being found liable for invasion of privacy. The courts still need to approve the deal and money will have to be set aside until all the appeals in the case are over. The article doesn't say how much but I'm sure it will at least be the $50 million bond that is required under Florida law.

The TV network and digital publisher has agreed to pay $135 million for the bankrupt blog network, according to a person familiar with the deal. Univision’s offer will encompass all seven of Gawker Media’s sites, including Gawker.com Ziff Davis and Univision were the only two bidders for Gawker, which filed for bankruptcy after Hulk Hogan won a $140 million judgment in a privacy case. Ziff Davis had originally offered $90 million for Gawker Media.

I don't care who buys it, but whoever does they need to start gutting it. Jezebel needs to be just completely shut down and all of it's editors fired. Kotaku pretty much needs an entirely new staff. Pretty much everyone working for the main Gawker site needs to go.

Pretty sure the new owners are of close enough mind, nothing will change.

Gawker will live for now, that's unfortunate since all the good staff has fled so there is a crappy click-bait narcissistic company left for a while.

Jalopnik was worth reading a few years ago, but bled talent for years. Gawker destroyed everything they touched, I'm glad this happened. It's funny, I expected it to be Apple who brought them down. I guess they're no match for the power of Hulkamania!

How does Gawker have any value to begin with?

The entire site literally looks like, and only publishes, the click-bait style ads you see at the bottom of every other site. I never even registered Gawker on my radar at all before this whole Peter Thiel business...was it ever even remotely worth reading? That short video of that Denton fella says it all. I don't think it ever was. Company mission statement: "Publish anything that will get the most page loads for our ad revenue". He doesn't even appear to have any real focus in answering the question he was given likely because he realizes he's not an actual journalist.

Even calling the people that contribute to that site SJWs is a huge stretch.

I feel sorry for real journalists because I cannot think of another career that has allowed such perversion of their profession. I'm sure there are real journalists out there but boy did the internet really do a number on the credibility of what used to be a profession that relied on real research and breaking actual stories. Any idiot with a blog these days is a journalist and none of them proof read.

They generate a huge amount of traffic monthly.

I love this story so much. Sleezy "news" outlet gets gutted, founder has liens put against all assets, Hogan gets tasty settlement, all while Billionaire good-guy sits back and laughs.

Univision will likely clean house and simply use the brand and infrastructure for a less-nefarious tabloid outlet.

Oh I'm sure many things will change. They might not do what they should do to make to an actual valid news organization, but things will change. There is no way Univision won't put policies in place to try and make sure these kinds of lawsuits never happen against Gawker again. Getting rid of all the hit pieces would at least be a positive change, even if it remains a worthless series of sites filled with SJW nonsense.

Well, at least they're no longer privately owned. They've been posting dumb-shit articles all week, celebrating their last week of 'freedom'.

You can only hope/assume their staff now gets muzzles.

What a shit media company.

Billionaire good guy? Are you fucking kidding me?

Someone's overly optimistic.

Univision CEO: We've bought Gawker!
Bob from the mail room: And *I* bought us a dumpster fire!
Univision Shareholders: Mr. CEO? YOU ARE FIRED! We're hiring Bob into your position.
Univision ex-CEO: But why?
Univision Shareholders: Because he brought something useful to the table...

I know it's cool to hate on gawker, but outside of the main gawker site, they had value. There still isn't much out there like io9 for SFF fans. Jalopnik is losing talent hand over fist, but the only stuff out there really better is make and model specific. You want to bullshit cars in general, and it beat the heck out of any other outlet for quite some time. GIzmodo and kotaku were fairly interchangeable with any other tech news site and gaming news site respectively. It's not all clickbait, not even now. Jezebel and Gawker were awful though.

Haim Saban, chairman of Univision, is the #1 donator to the Clinton Super PAC with over $10 million contributed this election cycle so far. Nothing is going to change; it will probably get worse.

Exactly this. Univision is in bed with the Clinton Foundation. It'll be a sham show.

Cool. I have a problem with news sites that violate ethics of journalism by taking money from politicians and their foundations, and people who defend them.
This is a complaint about Gawker how? Univision just bought them.

Regardless of your bullshit, Gawker was found, in a court of law, breaking the laws and Hogan got a landmark settlement because of it. It's not the first time they've done it, but it took a billionaire to fund it because Gawker was otherwise too big to fail, and acted as though they were infallible.

Basically, to be a Gawker apologist at this stage of the game is to admit you've checked your brain at the door.

Gawker picked a stupid hill to die on and defied court orders, but I disagree with the substance of the court's rulings, and I disagree that they are just a trash site that adds nothing of value. So no, I'm not a Gawker apologist, but I don't think they should be burned to the ground either, and seriously, fuck that thin skinned Peter Thiel.

What you are doing is the textbook definition of an apologist, even if you are trying to slow-play it at the beginning. But I digress....

Yea, fuck ethics and privacy!

Having a nuanced opinion requires one to acquire a brain that is beyond the stage of a five year old.

I have a problem with rich people using their resources to go after media outlets that publish things they don't like.
didnt gawker expose that Theil was gay, all while he was keeping that to himself? Its funny because anytime they mention Peter in any of their articles you can taste the saltiness in their words.

He was already out to his friends. He just didn't like them talking about him.

Regardless, Thiel is a public figure who publicly supports politicians who do and say very anti-gay things. His sexuality is news because of the implicit hypocrisy in its revelation.
