I actually thought the 2014 Godzilla film was pretty good, but I understand that plenty of people didn’t and are banking on this Japanese effort to be better. Do you like the classic Godzilla design or this newer one?

I really enjoyed the 2014 version. It managed to capture what made the originals fun without excessive cheesiness.

Looking good, I wonder if this is a continuation of the Destroyah storyline/universe. The 'nuclear scarring' on this Godzilla looks a lot like the scarring Godzilla was sporting in Destroyah.

I definitely prefer the look of the Japanese Godzilla over the 2014 US Godzilla. The Japanese Godzilla looks more like a demon, not entirely natural, and a lot scarier (those eyes and head profile especially). Whereas the 2014 'Fat Godzilla' looks more like a giant animal, something that could actually be living under our ocean. Giant Crocodile Grizzly monster. Which is kinda cool, in its own way.

Either way, both designs are leagues better than that Iguana-esque Broderick-movie Godzilla.

I think my only problem with the 2014 version was that there was so little Godzilla in it. This Japanese version looks pretty fun though! Hopefully he is in the movie for more than 20 minutes.

I"m a huge Gojira fan. Toho Godzilla is a different type of monster than the Hollywood version is. Both have their place, the 2014 was awesome for the movie it was (Destroy everything, unstoppable force of nature) vs. the Toho (Attacking Tokyo Because?) story driven movies.

This nuclear godzilla looks especially warped. I can't wait to see this movie.

Oh yeah, that airport scene was such a titty tease. Just when you thought Godzilla was about to rip it up with that other monster - it cuts away. At least when they finally did show Godzilla fight it was cool. That thing was a nasty beast.

I dunno - I like the old school godzilla....but this new one looks bad to me. I know he's changed a bit with all the things that he's been through...but if this is their re-boot...it looks horrible to me...that tail looks 3x longer that it normally is...you would thing they would up their game on the rubber suit design.

***On a side note...one of my fondest childhood memories was that of my father taking me to a Godzilla flick back when I was a kid..haha. It was to see Godzilla vs Megalon ( I think..the one that had that robot in it..Jet Jaguar!) I think it played with an Ultraman movie too! haha..***

Yup, Godzilla vs Megalon had Jet Jaguar in it. Believe Gigan made an appearance too (mostly consisting of clips from his past appearance).

Pretty sure that's also the movie where Godzilla did a crazy jump kick. Shit got weird back then.

Oh that is friggin' awesome!
I had the VHS tape of that one, and it was probably my favorite Godzilla movie as a kid, next to the NES game, that is. :D

Jet Jaguar ftw!

Not impressed, the military stuff looked nice. But the old school looking godzilla is a bit too oldschool for my taste.

I hate the little, tiny ultra short arms. The rest looks good.

Are you freaking kidding me with that music? I'd have a hard time sitting through the movie just because of that. That Godzilla looked wonky. Looked like a dude in a suit like the rest of the Japanese versions. Got the voice down but that's about it.

There was several weird things going on that I had a problem with.

1. Military aircraft, hardened against EMP from nukes for the past 50 years, seem to be falling out of the sky due to an EMP. I can overlook this because its fiction since it's a massive beast creating it and the term EMP was probably misused.
2. Hero told it was a 1-way trip with no extraction, can't disarm bomb so drives slow ass tug boat loaded with nuke to minimum safe distance away from city in the span of a couple minutes...and still gets helicopter extraction which flies him far away to not get vaporized. This writing error I couldn't really overlook.

On the plus side, Godzilla himself and the fight was probably the best I've seen from modern Godzilla movies. Hearing that roar in IMAX was astounding.

This Godzilla is being done with a combination of suit and CGI effects. Currently there are no plans for a North America release but hopefully it will be brought over sometime in the near future either in theaters or DVD/BLU-Ray. On a side note for any Godzilla fans out there Godzilla Returns also known as Godzilla 1984 is coming out in the U.S. on BLU-Ray on September 13th; it is the Japanese version with an English dub not the American version with Raymond Burr.

Mothra is the inspiration for my wife's pet name when she gets really pissed and then unleashes the wrath my way----- Cunthra !!

Meh.

Music is out of place. Godzilla just stands there the whole time. I guess if you want a modern take on the old original movies - OK.

Needs more close-ups of people pointing upwards and screaming - GOOOORD-ZeeeRAAAAAA!!!!!!
Other then that it seemed some pretty fuckin four-star shit.

I liked the 2014 movie except for one glaring issue....too god damn dark! I mean literally, I could not see shit for half the movie.

I ended up editing the movie scene by scene to jack up the luminosity of various scenes. And have to get it at camera cuts and slow fades so that its not obvious.

After that I was finally able to see what the hell was going on.

I have a 82" DLP. DLP's are known for the dark blacks, so maybe the movie was made with over bright LCD's and Plasma's in mind.

Likely it's that dark because of the 3D production pipeline.

The 3D medium is generally darker (unless the theaters jack up the brightness), but the actual production pipeline to have stock available for 3D or 3D conversion generally results in a darker, underlit film too.

Freddy and Jason never scared me as a kid, but a blood red Cookie Monster with razor sharp teeth that breathes nuclear fire would have left me cowering inside my closet for the duration of my childhood.

The Japanese people are only vaguely human. They are more or less shaped like homo sapiens.

Watching that makes me keep thinking about Honest Trailers. "Even more stares!"

Still, it's gotta be better than the last Godzilla movie that, ya know, never actually showed Godzilla.

There were parts about the Godzilla movie that were good, but not much. Lets see the bad things off the top of my head #1 billing Bryan Cranston as if he was a main character of the movie, #2 the love story/relationship part really needed to go away #3 was this Godzilla or Cloverfield? Because yeah there were a grand total of about 12 minutes during the movie where you actually see him.

Personally I found the American version from 2014 to be fine. Better than the one that actually was disowned. That said I had seen some of the old ones and wasn't expecting it to be 100% like the Japanese ones. I look at this trailer here and think nope, not something I want to see as the practical effects seem too bad. The suit looks horrible. Personally I will wait for the mashup between king Kong and Godzilla. Even though I don't expect much from that.
