I also noticed something else, sometimes pushing you memory higher lowers your 3DMark score. My score at +495 is higher than at +550.

ECC (Error correcting code) kicking in when memory is pushed too far. It results in performance regression.
 
I would runt he Ashes of Singularity benchmark... good indicator if your gpu is stable or not. Pretty crash happy until I lowered it down to +185 Core, +295 Mem. Even at +185 core i was only hitting 2075 Mhz max.
 
It seems I get a rarely appearing artifact at 5500 (11 GHz) memory. Rarely and usually in a cutscene in witcher 3 I can spot small blue flash. No artifacts during the gameplay itself though. When I lower the clock to 5400 - I can't seem to spot any "flash" like this.

I finally cracked 25k in graphics score with 3D Mark FireStrike.

im sure it will be easier now. Final/Overall Score mean really nothing important, what truly matter is the Graphics score as it's what affected directly by GPU performance overall 3dMark score can vary greatly due physic score which have huge variances from an i5 to an quad core i7 or hexa and deca i7s. graphic score is what really matter when comparing GPU performance.
 
Which is the best clocker right now? In terms of brand?

Well, all of the 1080s seem to hit between 2 and 2.15ghz depending on the silicon lottery - even the FE units like mine hit 2.1 but throttles back to around 2.05 ~ 2ghz as the temp ramps up. Seems like on air all of them will clock in this area. On water, maybe a bit higher with a lot less throttling... If you keep temps at or under 50c that's going to be ideal for getting max potential out of the card... the next step is like LN2 which is not practical at all for gaming.

Maybe some bios mods on the AIB units will change this.. They have WAY better power delivery and some of the beefiest coolers I have seen on a video card... so who knows. We're still in infancy here..

I have a gigabyte gtx 1080 g1 gaming. Maxed out the power limit and temp limits. Boosts all the way to 2025mhz. With 100mhz offset, boosts to 2088mhz and runs ~78C.

EDIT: Was able to push core to 2100mhz and memory to 5505mhz after more testing.

My standard STRIX Edition 1080 flashed with the OC version BIOS won't overclock on the core at all. Even an additional 50mhz on the core results in a driver crash... and that's with a +100mv voltage boost. As a matter of fact boosting the voltage seems to have no effect at all.

The RAM will overclock quite a bit, past +300mhz easy but it seems to make absolutely no difference in benchmarks. In fact my Fire Strike score actually went DOWN after raising the memory clock. Probably ECC in action or something.

Still, as is without touching anything but 120% power limit the card boosts on it's own to something like 2009mhz core. :)
 
Just got my hands on an MSI Sea Hawk X BIOS, running a few Firestrike runs now to get a 'baseline' log at +170/500 (core/VRAM) showing it hitting the power limit at 120%, will update after getting the new BIOS flashed and see where I can get.

Looks like I didn't win the silicone lottery with 1080 FTW. Right out of the box, boost clock goes up to 1974 MHz. Tried to OC it (video coming soon...currently uploading on youtube) and core clock stable at +75 running Heaven benchmark with 1 pass...thus giving me 2025 MHz boost clock. Need to play around with the mem clock more.

Lol any decent gpu made in the last 6 to 7 years can run Crysis maxed but the game is so cpu limited that performance is not all that impressive even with the fastest gpu made. You could run the game at 800x600 and even with a 6700k probably struggle to maintain much over 60 fps in some spots.

Got it a couple hours ago so I only tested heaven so far, holds 2038 - 2050 boost with the default curve, 2050 all the time with fans at 70%

BIOS was a bust, still ran into the power limit the entire time, and at a slightly lower clock speed, to boot. Go figure. Still just gonna patiently wait for a BIOS mod tool. :(

Bummer... so you have the CLC on the card now still and topping out early? Does it throttle back a lot or does it hold it's clock well while gaming? What about that voltage/frequency curve editor with Afterburner4.3.0? it looks like a lot of work but might help get the max potential. Where are you maxing out on your core as is now?

Yes, it is smacking its face against the power limit the entire time I game or bench. Clock falls somewhere like 50MHz or so because of the power limit, voltage peaks for a second at 1.062v and then drops to an average of 1.031v. That's one thing I really don't like about boost 3.0, it adjusts both clock speeds and voltages but not together and not in a very nonsensical way (eg it will drop the voltage before dropping clocks, which can very easily cause a clock speed to artifact due to not having enough voltage behind it to actually function). I've tried with the curve in Afterburner, but literally none of the clocks were stable, neither were voltages, everything still bounced around like mad.

Core is topping out at 2025MHz during gaming.

Maybe more mature drivers could help? But most likely you're going to need a better bios or like you said a bios editor. I guess this is life on the bleeding edge.

edit: I read on overclock dot net that "I'm seeing the best performance with the seahawk EK bios" so just passing it on.

Yeah, I saw that, I might try that one soon :)

Can't wait for a BIOS editor. I am not averse to the hard mod to remove power limit completely (simply bypassing three resistors on the board) but I don't want to take it all apart again for that lol

Is it really just the three resistors? I heard it doesn't work unless you do the three caps as well.

According to the xDevs article on the 1080, talking just about removing the current shunt resistors "If we manage to reduce signal from these shunts, then reported power limit will be reduced as well.", and then for the capacitors, it says "Adding 10Ω 0805 size resistor on top of every capacitor will reduce power levels about x3 times.". I don't particularly need it to be reported 3x less since I'm not putting it under LN2, so I am going to just remove the main current shunts and see where it gets me :)

If you're hitting the power limit and throttling down occasionally then increasing it will help you achieve stable OC - but as far as ocing more I think you just need to lower the temps of the chip. I've already seen numerous people using FE on water and reporting ~2100-2200 mhz; that's 11,250 gflop/s ! That's more than double a stock 980 :p

IIRC on Maxwell I got + 50 MHz adding water and +50 MHz with voltage locking. Of course without removing the power limit I would have been stuck at 1400 MHz vs 1550 (Titan X).

It seems the PL is even more aggressive with Pascal. You'd definitely hold clocks better without it. Might be even more stable if you don't have temp issues since it won't throttle voltage.

In short I agree with you.

It's always a hard decision for me if I want to hard mod or wait for a bios mod... I haven't seen too much on the ETA of the pascalbiostweaker.

BOOM. Same exact +170/+500 core/VRAM applied to each. Look at how much voltage and clock bounced around before, and how they don't ever budge after :D

And this is just with soldering a small copper wire bridging the RS1, RS2, and RS3 resistors.

If you're hitting the power limit and throttling down occasionally then increasing it will help you achieve stable OC - but as far as ocing more I think you just need to lower the temps of the chip. Well, in my extremely limited testing with not hitting power limit, instead of bouncing between 0.981v and 1.031v and clocks bouncing between 1965MHz and 2025MHz, I'm getting a sustained 1.062v and 2062MHz while keeping the exact same OC settings, see my Afterburner logs above :)

This is the big problem that I was seeing, it was applying the same clock speed to a very wide array of voltage points, which was causing my card to hard lock. God I'm glad I went ahead and did this mod! :D

Is there any credence to the people who swear that FE 1080's boost higher than aftermarket?
They all do close to the same, but some aftermarket cards with higher power limits can sustain slightly higher clocks.
