AMD’s Radeon Technology Group rolled out Korhan Erenben to announce the AMD Radeon RX 470 and RX 460 video cards. At $149 for the Radeon RX 470 and $99 for the Radeon RX 460, it looks like AMD is targeting the budget gamer with these cards.

I'm interested in bios flashing a RX 470 into a 480. They are the same card right, just the 470 has disabled parts? I wonder if AMD laser cut those suckers?

There are a hell of a lot of people who simply won't spend $300 + on a video card. This is where AMD will do very well. I'm a bit fed up with the cost of high end video cards.

I've never spent more than CAD 300 on a video card and likely never will. I'd rather upgrade more frequently.

Kijiji is your friend, i got a r9 290 @ CAD$210(Thats like $160 USD) with 2 years in store warranty remaining almost 2 years ago. Right now you can grab a 980 for less than 350 if you're lucky

It's possible to unlock cores on AMD Fury products using only a software tool, so perhaps you'll be able to do that.

If the numbers Videocardz has for the RX 470 are correct (avg 13368 in 3Dmark11), $150 is a great price for a card that will play pretty much anything out there right now.

yeah I'm interested in the 470 as well. My kids pc's are all quad core i5's with 1080p monitors. 470's should be an inexpensive (relatively) upgrade for them. I was at the store yesterday looking at the 1080 and 1070 as they had a few of each in stock, but I barely game anymore so it's hard to justify it.

Honestly, if rx470 hits same clocks on memory/chip as rx480, i am not sure what the point of rx480 even is then, since rx470 will be like 90% of performance for 75% of price.

Man, do I ever feel you on that. Middle age, work, kids, marriage, mortgage, etc... It's hard to find any time at all, really, and gaming is only one of my hobbies. It's just about impossible to justify $600-$1000 CAD on a new 1070 or 1080.

I just hope AMD realizes that 1080p monitors are becoming a thing of the past and would hope most gamers are at 2560x1440 by now.

Steam survey said that 95% of gamers are at 1080p and 84% spend $100 - $300 for a graphics card. :(

The cost of entry for 2560x1440 is still too high to be honest (it's too high for me at least). 2-3 years from now maybe, but not this year.

Ignoring the "Other" option for resolution, less then 3% of Steam survey respondents have a resolution greater then 1920x1080. 4K resolution isn't even enough people to get their own category.

Heck - 25% are running 1366x768.

You are the 1%. To believe that "most gamers" are running 1440/4k displays on their 980ti's is a gaming hardware pipe dream.

Thats what I said when the rumored target for the RX480 was the 1080P market.

Now, i must ask, given that 2 RX480 are running so well, does anyone knows if the 470 and 460 support crossfire?

If yes, i wonder how good they would be in 1080p res.

I would like to see a breakdown of how many of those who do not have at least a 1080p monitor are gaming on a laptop.

Are you on the same planet as everyone else? 1080p monitors are the vast, VAST majority of monitors on the market. In fact, I'm willing to bet there are a higher percentage of 1080p monitors in the gaming community than white men in US politics.

I actually know people that have a low powered gaming pc connected to a 720p tv.

gotta do something with the bad chips
And when you consider they sell each and every 480 that goes on the shelf.....I would be very motivated to sell ones that tested good as full rx480's (If i were at AMD). Still, It will be super cool if some get free full unlocks.:)

I'm wondering how the RX 460 will compare to the 75W GTX 950. I was hoping for a R7 370 @50W, which doesn't look too likely now.

I'm really happy with what a GTX 950 and a cheap SSD can do for a marginal 1st gen i5 or 2nd gen i3 for $150 US.

Going back to my Celery 300A days and Abit MOBO's...

I never spend more than $150 on any single computer component. I'm an old school OC'er. I purchase quality components that are overclocker friendly and this 470 appeals to me in terms of performance and pricing.

Eh? I moved from a 1440p monitor to a 4k monitor. The advantage of that move is I can play games set to 1080p and they scale perfectly.

Well, they likely test multiple points / parameters before binning to a lower card. It's possible, as with the processors and other GFX cards of years past, that users will get a card capable of going to the big brother. They may never notice the reason it failed QA. Could cause a random driver crash every once awhile but otherwise be perfectly useable.

I just hope you realize that most gamers aren't running $1,000+ worth of GPU's to power $1,000+ worth of monitors.

1080P is the most popular resolution by far and will likely stay that way for years to come.

I cant remember now....But what was the differences between the 480 and the 470? Seems like in the past it was almost always the first batch of stuff thats most likely to unlock perfectly.

480 has 12.5% more CUs than the 470. (32 vs 36)
480 8GB standard, 470 4GB standard

Considering that all three 4GB 480s at newegg are marked as not being restocked and walkins to Best Buy can't order one anymore, I wouldn't expect to see those again any time soon. Instead, I'd expect to see the 480 8GB permanently dropped to $199 by this fall.

Just quoting you for a good lead in ;) ... After I used VSR I feel even less need to spend the extra on a higher resolution over 1080. Just get the bigger screen size and VSR helps make it look absolutely amazing.

I hope AMD can survive until they release their paper-weights at the end of this year.

nVidia has had such a large head start that I wonder what their future holds considering that once AMD's godlike gpu comes out, the 1080ti's will decimate it. When Zen comes out intel will be afk and come out on top.

Also, its been almost a decade and people still are stuck at 1080p?

Well I do not think it is fair to assume the 1080ti will decimate whatever Vega is. This is really a wait and see, we have a good idea what a 1080ti might be, but we are the dark about Vega.

Yeah, I don't think the majority of people even care. 4K will become the standard when $100 video cards can handle it and a $100 4K monitor is available at every BestBuy.

This. A lot of people are starting to tune in to plugging their PC into their 60" living room 4k set. 1440p may end up just being a waystation for dedicated desktop enthusiasts. Consoles will live at 1080p for the next two generations or so and then jump to trying to support 4k natively. Then we'll have all those gripe threads about how the MS console is so ghetto because it rendered CoD 9:Modern WW1 Ops at 1440p instead of 2160p like the PS 6.5 Alpha.

I have a 970 and have yet to find a game that does not run just fine @ 2560X1440. I generally set every game to MAX settings. I've yet to find a game that I have had to go and turn any settings down because performance was bad.

It can't do 4K without compromising some settings, But 4K desktop monitors are still priced out of the norm at this point.

With the new Nvidia line hitting stores now, 970's prices should be dropping and easily available in the used market.

I agree with you - but 12k monitors will be the latest and greatest. 4k will be so lame... I remember getting a CRT that could do 1024x768 (in color!) was a big deal :)

Exactly what I was thinking....Who can spend $400-600 on a vid card and another $400 on a monitor......lol my whole system cost me about $450!!

Most people talk about Vega 10 when they mention Vega. Vega 10 will compete with gp104.

GP102 should indeed decimate Vega 10, but it's competitor will be Vega 11, not 10.
