This thing doesn't walk like any human I know. Well, unless you are talking about a drunk human. This is probably how John Connor and the resistance were able to identify the first terminators...they probably walked like this. You're drunk robot, go home!

Looks like if they added some T&A to it, it would have a pretty good jiggle! lol

Walks pretty smooth for not having a counterbalance, at least any I can see, like arms...

I wonder if it can handle any additional weight or if that would throw it's balance off completely.

Depends on the gains programmed into the controller. It might not be able to without adding some wonky movements (for the time being).

I loved the last part when the human tries to imitate the robot walk :LOL:

By 'walks like a human' it uses a passive-dynamic knee-locking walking gait, rather than the active-knee gait common for bipedal robots (e.g. Asimo). This is a much more power-efficient walking gait.

It walks like a drunk human, that just shit his pants.

And please don't call it a robot while it's fed power from an external source, and is hooked up on a crane to prevent it from falling over.

You really should check up on what the definition of a robot actually is. It's source of power is not one of the defining metrics. And this isn't a production model, it's basically R&D. Would you want something costing tens possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars untethered until you had the model/code built to perfection?

In tabloid journalism like this, robot means exactly what I use it for. Manufacturing robots also use external power source, but it's not what these journalists mean when they say "robot".

What I'm saying is stop fear mongering until they can actually make a robot in the sense they mean it. No, actually stop fear mongering period.

When they say a robot that is walking like a human I'm not expecting a walking platform under development dangling from a crane.

Who is fear mongering?

It's research. They'll put it in the field with a different power source and fully self contained later.

Of course, with all the different teams and companies working on this stuff, if they were to all combine resources, we would have great robots by now.

The tether is not supplying power to the robot and is not stabilizing the robot - it's only there as a safety precaution.

edit [source] - DURUS Brings Human-Like Gait (and Fancy Shoes) to Hyper-Efficient Robots

Yeah and later the very same article says:

The planar (and tethered) version of DURUS has already demonstrated human-like running behavior, and we can’t wait to see this kind of thing on an unsupported robot

I believe that means this robot is not capable of walking without supports. Since the wording implies another robot might be able to walk like this without support. They're not saying we can't wait to test durus in a real world environment.

People who make up stupid headlines like "Robot that walks like a human"?
Or what would you call it?

First, I believe they were aiming for it to walk like a human.

Second, if you're referring to the robot's are going to kill us stuff, it's just a joke.... unless you're that guy who killed the police officers :/

The part of the article you quoted is talking about running, not walking, a completely different case. Gotta walk before you run. ;)

this is called a robot. The bar is pretty low.

Well I'm not sure about that. But if that's really the case, then I admit I was wrong by assuming it can only walk on a level treadmill.

It is advisable to read all the posts in a train of thought when you're this late to the party, before you actually respond.

Georgia tech, that's worrisome because almost everything they develop in the south is for weaponizing I think.

I responded to statement I quoted. This is a forum and not a chat room.

And its still a robot. Just not a practical Android or Automaton which are the terms that should be used for what you're discussing.

I think you have that backwards, a chatroom is a disorganized mess, where noone expects you to start reading from the start of the discussion, usually there is no clear start to it anyway. On a forum you can take the time to read the posts before jumping in halfway trough.

If you've read the discussion you'd know what I meant, now you're just being obnoxious for the sake of defending your mistake.
