So I'm a huge Dark souls fan and I swear I'm not an idiot, but goddamn dude.

I loved DS2 so much and was left wanting more after beating DS3 so I bought Scholar Of The First Sin. I fucking should have known something was up when I launched SOTFS and the DLC didn't pop up. I'm like fuck it whatever and start playing the game assuming after I beat it or at some point it would alert me to the new areas. "NAW MUTH$^$()% you gotta puzzle that shit out"

Seriously, after I got to what felt like pretty deep into the game I give up and go research the DLC. This being the same game I had to look up how to light a goddamn torch. I swear I'm a well respected engineer you can track me down on Linkedin. I can legally drive a car.

You have to go to the black gulch find some "forgotten key" I forget where I even found it, then you gotta go to the pit in the majula, find a hard to get to latter, then find another maguffin then go back to black gulch behind the boss in a room behind fire (I never even noticed) and then use it to open the "First" DLC expansion. I'll probably have to go do some so Geocache trek to find the rest of them or discover a new prime number or some crazy shit to unlock the rest of the expansions.

I cant be mad because I wanted this. I love Dark Souls and understand I signed up for this BDSM. In a world full of blinking Arrows telling you where to go and Soldiers in Call of Duty yelling "Go to the right...NO TO THE RIGHT" everytime you enter a room, From Software is the only company still making the torturous games of my youth.

Anyone else feeling soul crushingly stupid when playing Dark Souls games? Like you can honestly admit you totally struggle with things that should be simple in those games?

I'll admit that it took me about 20 minutes when I first started Dark Souls III to figure out that I needed to stick my coiled sword into the Firekeeper's ashes...

Maybe stick to Pokemon and Mario if you need spoonfeeding and hand holding.

I'm with you. I'm sure the "Hordes that swear From can do no wrong" will call you stupid or whatever, but I get your point.
A lot of the obtuse stuff they force you to do could be removed or at least streamlined without affecting the game one bit.

But when you figure it out you are so proud of yourself; that you want to pat yourself on the back. With that said I can't play the first 2 games with my arthritic hands. Those damnable XBOX controller cramps I get from holding the controller for 5 minutes isn't worth it. I did hear that DS3 has Steam Controller support baked into it so I might grab a copy when the game + DLC is $50 ish. The Steam Controller feels no worse than gripping a mouse to me.

This is my favorite thing about the Souls games, personally. I finished 1 and 2 without any online help and I'm slowly working my way through 3 the same way. I really like discovering for myself how all the weapons, spells and mechanics work and finding all of the little secrets and hidden stuff on my own.

If that's not what you are into, there are plenty of other excellent titles instead. Shadow of Mordor has a lot of similar mechanics but is infinitely more straightforward.

IMO that kind of stuff is an unnecessary time sink. I don't have 8 hours a day to play games, I don't want to waste time trying to figure out obscure shit just to unlock extra content I already paid for.

that's what makes the Souls games what they are!...yes it obtuse and really hard to find but that's Souls for ya...you can always cheat and look it up online if you want to save yourself some time and frustration but Souls fans savor the challenge and yes finding obscure little details and rooms is part of the allure...I always complete the game once blind and then go in and look at a walkthrough and am still surprised at how many things I missed...but then it makes multiple playthroughs feel even better as you're constantly discovering new things...also as a Souls vet you know some of the things to look for and it makes discovering secrets easier- always step on an elevator and walk off to see if there is a secret, read people's messages to discover illusory walls etc etc

I dont want anyone to get the wrong impression that I'm mad or bitching I just wanted to comment on how insane it was just to unlock the expansion. I've never seen anything like that before. I unlocked it before work this morning and I'm just itching to go home so I can play it. All the reviews say the DS2 expansions are 100% awesome.

Just ignore him. It's that elitist attitude some people get regarding these games.

Honestly, what the OP is describing reminds me of King's Quest style puzzle solving. Hell, those games are outright mean. You could literally miss a puzzle and thus never be able to complete the game...and not know you miss it. Doomed to wander the earth a lost soul.

Yet somehow at the age of 12, we were able to conquer them, the mind games with From, they are excessive lol.

I think a lot of 12-year-olds never did solve those puzzles and probably have a negative recollection of those games.

Not all of these classic, "brutally hard" games were actually good...people seem to have rose-colored nostalgia glasses in these cases.

Kings Quest wasn't brutally hard, I think the average American these days is just a lot dumber than we were 20+ years ago...

So in Wizardry this old PC or NES game, take your pick, all the spells are in latin and you could only figure out what they do by guessing until you had a guide.
All your characters age every time spend a night in the Inn, they grow old and die pretty quickly.
Then one of the later spells you learn is to teleport around the dungeon, but there's no ingame map and when you cast it you just put in co-ordinates and you can actually accidentally teleport your party into a fuckin wall! and they all die. You can however go make a new party and go retrieve your old dead party out of the wall. You can revive party members in town but sometimes it doesn't work and then they turn to ash and you get one more try then they're fucking gone forever.

Them days were fucking hardcore.

Same thing happened to me. I was even right by the fire trying to interact with it, but not in the right spot right by the fire...

If From Software changed their mind games, the games wouldn't be the same. They offer a unique experience in gaming that I love.

I just bought all 3 Dark Souls games and now I'm scared to start playing them . I don't have this kind of time lol

(...) From Software is the only company still making the torturous games of my youth.

Dark Souls' obtuseness is pretty tame compared to La-Mulana. Their clues are modeled after Samurai Shodown 2's clues - NOTHING MAKES A GODDAMN LICK OF SENSE EVEN WITH A GUIDE. I actually uninstalled the game because of that. There's being sneaky, and then there's making no sense.

Not so big a fan of souls games, the mechanics aren't my sauce.. I love a challenge, but this game to me is a time suck.

I just wish From Software would make some Armored Core games on PC now that they have seen some success from the Souls series on the platform.
