Considering the success of larger phones, this seems like nothing more than a pointless rant—and then there’s the fact that nobody is forcing you to buy a larger phone if you can’t deal with one. But I’ll ask…how big is too big?

…we keep buying bigger ones year after year. This is all our fault. There are some improvements like slimmer bezels and thinner designs that make big phones more tolerable and easier to use, but they're still stupidly oversized phones. I use an iPhone 6 with a "reasonable" 4.7-inch screen. If I had it my way, I would buy an iPhone SE, but it's not good enough for me because it tops out at 64GB of storage and I need (yes, need) at least 128GB. My personal phone choice will never be a phablet. Like everyone else, though, I've learned to accept the phablet. The 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge is one excellent phone. So is the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 5. And so is the 5.7-inch Nexus 6P. Phablets will be among us forever.

Nah. Went from 5S to 6 and had no issues. Then got an S6 edge and again, no issues other than maybe the edges being too sharp. Now I have an iPhone 6s Plus and have zero issues. My hands aren't even that big and I don't have issues handling it.

Thanks, my 4S 16 GB is just fine for the moment. And it's paid for. And it has a cheap plan that is grandfathered.

I don't see my Note 5 to be too big, rather it fits my hand. I regularly pinch it from the top and bottom of the phone with my thumb and middle finger comfortably. I usually cradle it in one hand and use the thumb on that hand to type, like I am doing now. A smaller phone would not be comfortable to me.

I've owned every note. And almost every galaxy except the edge variants. I don't find them too large at all, and I don't have overly large hands.

A co worker recently put her iPhone 5 next to my note 5, and said look it had a baby. I put her phone in my hand. Holy small batman. I could hardly type on the micro keyboard. I felt like I needed pre pubecent hands to hold and type on it. Its literally micro sized.

I know it's all just a personal preference but after years of using "larger" higher end phones, I could not go back unless... no I couldnt go back. But since I have not had a "smaller" phone since before the original HTC Evo 4G, I don't think it should ever be a problem.

If you want to use those giant phones, that's fine by me. I just don't want to be forced to get one in order to get newer features. I have a Moto X Pure, which is on the larger side of normal-sized phones. I have no desire to get anything larger and to be pretty honest, I wish it was a little smaller. I guess if technology goes in a direction where we can fold or shrink devices when we aren't using them I'll happily go larger. Until then, no thanks.

I don't mind my 5.5" screen phone's size at all, but I'm not sure I'd want to go bigger for a phone admittedly.

6" form-factor is perfect for me. No smaller, but also not much larger if at all.

The writer uses the phrase "ultra-big ass" + "phablet" to describe 5.5-5.8" size devices. For alot of people, that's a perfect fit for their grip / portability constraints - like myself. I'll go even up to 6" on that one.

The handset that the writer is using as a pic for his article...he may have a point with something that large. To me, "ultra big ass" / "phablet" start at > 6", and not an inch less.

I went from the iPhone 3S to 6 Plus with no trouble, though the latter pushed phone size to the edge. Doubt I'd like anything bigger. My HTC 10 is a really good size for me.

If we were still in the age where a cell phone was to call people and text, then use they would be too big. However that isn't the case anymore. It is a small portable pc now. You can watch movies on it, listen to music, surf the web, play games, use it as a remote desktop client for those in IT, run multiple business relates apps on it....

The larger screen makes all this much more accessible to people and easier to use. Something that will keep pushing larger and larger phones as we keep trying to push more functionality to these devices.

Personally I find remote desktop much eaiser to use to log into servers remotely using my 6in phone that I did back on my iPhone 4.

My candybar circa 2006 is pretty nice. No google spyware on it, too.

Stupid, entitled, spoiled brat whining about first world issues, need I say more?

You need 128GB? You need sustenance and water, everything else is not a necessity but a luxury.

The click bait article doesn't work unless he makes up a reason that the iPhone SE can't be used

I am personally grateful for the large phones. I got an iPhone 6 Plus to replace my 4 after having blood vessels burst in both of my eyes. It is real nice to be able to see the screen without having to use the magnifying functions.

This guy reads like your typical internet nerd that can't understand why things are changing and is upset about it.

Do you guys have problems using those 5.5+" phones 1 handed? I can use the iPhone 6 (not plus) if standing up or sitting. But if I lay down and try to type, fuck me if I'm not dropping that thing on my face, constantly rotating it, or bending my fingers in unnatural motions. And I have big hands.....not big enough for all 6" though.

Softball needs to die in a fire because the ball is too big and I like baseball better which has a right-sized ball and I can't conceive that people might like things differently than I like them.

Mostly watching the girl pitchers freaks me out. Does not look comfortable to do the windmill over and over.

People throw around the term "entitled" so every time they don't agree with someone. Its really lost its meaning. Don't like big phones, prefer smaller ones? You're entitled. Prefer pepperoni pizza over cheese? You're entitled!

Entitled means when someone wants things to cater to his very special preferences disregarding everyone else. This guy fills the dictionary definition of entitled to the letter.

He doesn't say he prefers smaller phones, he says bigger phones are stupid, and every new device should fit his definition of what a good size is. If that's not entitled I don't know what is.

I wouldn't bat an eye if he only said he prefers small phones. That's perfectly reasonable position to hold. But he says everything that is larger than his preference shouldn't exist because reasons.

Maybe entitled is a term thrown around frequently these days. But in this case it's perfectly appropriate. Or perhaps it is used more because more people come out of the woodwork with a silver spoon up their ass.

No one needs 128GB of storage on their fucking phone. NO ONE.

You do not need 27 games installed at the same time. You do not need your entire music collection in one place plus every shitty picture you ever took. You want it, maybe. I don't even want it.

Take 5 minutes to prioritize and "getting by" with "only" 32GB (or even 16GB for many people) isn't difficult at all.

Anything larger than 5" is ridiculous to me. It isn't a phone 6"+ at that point it is a tablet and you look retarded with it stuck to your head.

Maybe if the iPhone had reasonable bezels, the ranter could get use to a reasonable sized (if still small) screen.

i dont mind if a phone has a 5.5 to 6" screen as long as the bezels are thinner than say ones on a 5" phone. i do think though that even with next to no bezels a 6" screen would be the max for a phone for me

I don't need it, but it is nice.

And yes I did think about editing out that last entry, but it goes to show how little is actually installed on my phone yet I still manage to use a lot of space.

Do you have a long commute on a bus or train? Just curious where you'd be wanting to watch 50GB+ of video. I'd prefer to just watch videos and podcasts on a real screen, either a tv, desktop monitor, or if those aren't available, on a laptop screen.

I remember back in the day a cell phone was the size of a brick and 2 times the weight with a battery life of 18 minutes in call 2-3 days standby the only display they had was a 6 digit 8 segment display.

I would say 6" is the largest a phone should be anything bigger is a tablet...

...33GB of video, 21GB of podcasts, 17.5GB of music, 11GB of photos.

All that shows me is that you never clear off your device, just keep adding shit, 90% of which you'll never go back to after looking at it / watching it the first time.

I'm 6'3" with a relatively large hand and have used Note devices before. That said, smaller devices are easier to access the whole screen with just one hand or fit in your pocket.

Yes, 3 hours for round trip commute (1.5 hours each way). That's where the music/podcasts/audible come in to play. I had a standard 16GB model before this and I was either at the mercy of network connectivity to access my library remotely or constantly juggling out podcasts and audiobooks.

The videos are more for having something to do during lunch or for giving the kids a distraction when out and about. I do not watch videos while driving.

The video part is little misleading. 13.6GB of that is music videos.

I tried the iPhone 6 Plus for a few weeks - it was bigger than I cared for. I've also used some of the Samsung Notes - nice screens, but they are bigger than I care for. I've been using an iPhone 6 for about 1.5 years and find it to be about the perfect size for my hands and usage patterns. To each his own.
I got my wife an iPhone 6s Plus (replacing an iPhone 5 she washed in our washing machine...sort of worked afterwards but has issues). For her, it doesn't really fit well in her pockets. She doesn't carry a purse.
In general, women do not have deep pockets like men. Her blue jeans are about half as deep as mind. Maybe they make men's pockets bigger so we can play pocket pool? Hell, doesn't make any sense to me. Don't even get me started on the fake pockets in some of her jeans. WTH are those for?

I had a customer ask me to type in 6 email accounts and their server details into a iPhone 5s.

Took me forever and I felt physically drained after.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy? I get shots in my eyes about every three months to help stop mthe vessels from bursting. Thats also why I went to a larger phone. The Note series phones are just about perfect for me.

I don't even know why this is an issue. Sounds like some people have a 1st world problem. Boo hoo. Then don't buy a "big ass" phone!

Some people love them. Some need them. I don't have one because I carry my phones on my belt. The biggest I carry is a Galaxy S5.

and then there’s the fact that nobody is forcing you to buy a larger phone
While this is technically true, it ignores a point: the "high end phone with small screen" market seems poorly-served nowadays. Want a phone with >=2GB of RAM and a screen <=4.5"? There's not much out there. Where's the Galaxy S6 mini?

When I can no longer touch my thumb and middle finger together then I know its gotten too big. About 5.25-5.7 is the sweet spot for me.
