The folks over at the Crypto Mining Blog got their hands on what appears to be the results of an Ethereum hashrate test on the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 480 and the results are less than stellar. Apparently the RX 470 results are a bit more encouraging for low power mining, depending on price and availability.

Unfortunately the hashrate that is apparently achieved at stock frequencies is a bit disappointing at just around 24 MHS for Ethereum Dagger-Hashimoto mining with about 100W, we are also told that with a memory overclock 26-28 MHS are possible with about 120W of power usage. If these results turn out to be true the Radeon RX 480 would not be that great for mining Ethereum as we suspected recently.
 
Do normal people still mine for Bitcoin?

Yes they do. I make about $10-$15 a day. Its a little extra fun money for basically free now that my investment is paid off and I don't have a power bill.

At the same time, this isn't good news for AMD, I believe a fairly large amounth of their sales still come from crazy big farms. Even though GPU mining is almost dead.
 
polaris seem to be more focused on gaming like maxwell, i wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of some hardware to gain efficiency on the chip

No. Mining is pure SP grunt.

It would at least match the most current Nvidia 9/10xx series cards. This result tops any of the older 29x/39x cards for mining perf/watt, however. Whether whole farms would be switched over or not from older-gen cards is the real question, and i imagine the answer to be a big no.

at 24-25mh is a pretty good number though for Ethereum, esp since the RX480 is going to cost less than 250$ for an 8gb.

although i suspect the rx470 to have the same hashing performance and be cheaper, so that will likely be the card to get.
 
One question, what driver version was this card said to be running? 15.12 is still the go to driver version for proper hashrates. I doubt this card is well supported by that driver, so they're probably using the latest Catalyst, which cut 1/3 off my hashrates when I tried it. Just food for thought.

not sure on the driver version, but you don't have to use 15.12 for the best hash rates. I am using 16.6.1 and average over 34mh on my 290, which is higher than most. Best hash rates are determined by the miner you are using, with the claymore miner currently being the best at least for ethereum and AMD cards.

maybe it'll be one less excuse that they'll have to gouge the fuck out of the cards once they release.
 
hell my 7870 clocked as high or low as want it(core or memory for testing wise) the best I ever could nail for alittle while was 14-21(21 very early on 14-16 as of late) and that was heavily clocked and pushed to point of if do anything but mine Eth was crashing system :D

if this avg 23-26mh at "stock" or even slightly declocked is very likely to use less power then mine does doing similar things(AMD was always pretty decent especially with 7k series and being ~20w less then rating unless heavuly clocked) and likely be much faster gaming performance while still being cooler running
I do not at all call that "fail" and very likely will run better then the "rumors" suggest via probably held back by drivers or something to make "appear" slower, as why would AMD truly want raw numbers be released befoe release, if they do that, then whatever ace is up their sleeve is gone.

Likely they did not castrate their cards for "gaming" purposes, maybe they toned down a bit, but I would find a very hard time seeing them rip them down like Nvidia has time and time again just to butter up sales for thier highest and mightest top dollar cards, maybe they leaving surprises in store, if anything will probably have parts rarely used for a generation or 2 as they have also done this for years via things such as tesslators, Async and so forth, Nvidia sure as hell does not do that, they chop away, they dont add.

Anyways, IMHO seems likely to use ~40w less then my 7870 has oh so many years ago, will cost approx ~$75 less for 4gb then mine did for a 2gb (Canada) and absolutely be a massive upgrade in gaming and seemingly "mining" performance, I wonder how well that "new" blower style cooler will work, cause that is one thing I do in fact like, to be better able to control venting the heat produced and not interfer with case airflow, been a few years since had blower style, and from the few pics see of the "rumored" coller they will use, it seems like it will do very well compared to say 4870-5870-6870-7870 blower style ones did/do.

Just a few more days to see :)

So you pay nothing for electricity? Solar?

So it's not actually free.

even if he had to pay for electric currently ethereum mining is profitable on gpu's as long as you don't pay stupid high rates for electric.

Example- my 290 gets 33-34mh , which will net me around 0.27 ethereum per day, or around 4$. the 290 in question is pulling around 320watts from the wall, and I pay 9 cents per KWH. Meaning I am using around 7.6KWH a day which costs me 68 cents.

4$-.68= 3.32 profit per day.

it all depends on what coin you mine, and what you pay for electric.

Mining a crypto-currency even more useless than Bitcon, got it :cool::p And I say this as someone who mined around 7200 Bitcoins back before pretty much anyone knew what they were. The entire ecosystem is a joke unless you're in on the "scam" That etherium smart contract exploit on the DAO sure was a thing too.

You can't cash out a large sum like that unless you're one of the peeps in on the scam, or running an exchange yourself.

I've managed to get a couple hundred $K out via some shadier dealings when SR wasn't something a lot of people knew about. Trying to cash out even $10,000 via an exchange inevitably leads to multi week delays followed by cancelled transactions. If it ever actually becomes something fully legitimate I'll be the first in line that cash out ;).

I've never had a problem cashing out large amounts. Transfer everything to coinbase and sell. 50k a day limit.
 
Finally wasting energy will not be a paid vocation.
 
Any news about 460 hashrate?

Not that, i have seen -- but it should be around 10mh/sec at best. The best bang for the buck is nitro 470 ? 24mh/sec -- with ethereum the speed of the memory is a big deal. I have my 480s under volted / clocked. 24mh/sec
