Do You Pronounce it GIF or JIF?

It DOES matter, and people that pronounce it "jiff" should be sterilized by the government and put into labor camps.

Because no one calls a "gift card" a "jift card" (that deserves to continue to consume our oxygen), so dropping the "t" its still a gif.

It "jif" only if you pronounce graphics as "jraphics"

No it's fucking not. What about "gin" or "giraffe"?

The G can be hard or soft. The soft G in GIF is correct. JIF.

Now you can say that it can be a hard G, which it can, but the creator of the word himself says it's JIF, which is grammatically correct so I'm going to say it the way he says it because he MADE IT.

Speaking of being sterilized...Christ I hope you don't have kids and teach them your "wisdom". JIF is completely and utterly correct grammatically.

Just because he invented the thing doesn't mean he's right

Graphics
Jraphics
Jolden Retriever

It sounds fucking dumb

Lol. This argument fails.

Tough = Tuff
Dough = Doh

Doughnut = Duffnut?

Also, this 'discussion' will live on forever as long as the format is used. Never mind the fact that the creator confirmed the way he intended it to sound.

Does it really matter? Most people I know pronounce it with the hard G.

Usually, a c or g sound is hard or soft depending on the vowel that follows it. Here's the general rule:

When c or g meets a, o, or u, its sound is hard.
----cap, cave, colt, comedy, curly, cuddlegas, gather, goblet, goddess, gum, gutter

When c or g meets e, i, or y, its sound is soft.
----census, center, circle, citizen, cycle, cymbalgel, general, giant, ginger, gypsy, gyrate

I really don't know the formal rules for this when applied to abbreviations but I'd think you'd take the hard or soft usage based on the full word graphical.

I feel like the creator is trolling people when he sides with Jiff people.

I say Gif.

Your choice in pronunciation is a reflection on your manhood. Guys who like metal pronounce it GIF. Those who like musical theater pronounce it JIF.
That explains a lot.
But... What if someone likes both? I can't be the only guy listening to Behemoth while driving to the theater to see Wicked for the 3rd time.

And I go with what the inventor says: "jif"
It means you're bicurious, leaning more toward gay.

Oh, look! Another 'g' word with the 'g' next to a vowel that is pronounce with a hard 'g'.

Contradictory. What about "gift" or "give?" These two words are closer to the acronym "GIF," and are common in the English language.

The creator is the owner of the file format, not of the way the acronym is pronounced. I don't give a fuck what he says.

No it's not contradictory. I said it can go BOTH WAYS. Can you read???

Here let me help you:

The G can be hard or soft.

The fact that it can go both ways and the fact that the man that invented the word says he means it to be pronounced as "JIF" is all I need to know on how to say it.

You can argue to high heaven all you want.

Guys....

It not a word, it's an acronym. Say it however you want. I guarantee it won't sound anywhere near as stupid as trying to say the acronym SCSI as a word.

Now for the real kicker. How do you all pronounce the following: FBI, CBS, NSA, NBA, NFL, etc....

Spoiler: You don't because they aren't WORDS.

SCSI = Scuzzy
GUI = Gooey
LOL = Lawl
spelling out the letters results in a nut/vag-punch

"Ghe-raffe" is not an acceptable pronunciation of giraffe. "Ghin" is not an acceptable pronunciation of gin.

Am I the only one who says fibi, cabs, neesa, nubba, niffle?

CBS = cibs (like cigs), not fucking cabs... fuck it man I thought we were bros...

It "jif" only if you pronounce graphics as "jraphics"

I mean yeah, how do you pronounce giraffe, giant, ginger? With a hard fucking G right? No?

It's a soft G according to the guy that made it up. so... Fine by me, as Gs can be soft or hard, even when followed by an i.

Sounds like something a grammar Nazi would say... Hitler? Exposed.

Says the man who just said that people should be sterilized and put in labor camps based on them using the correct pronunciation of a word......

"Ghe-raffe" is not an acceptable pronunciation of giraffe. "Ghin" is not an acceptable pronunciation of gin.

Are you fucking with me? Both those words use the soft G. How is "Ghe-raffe" not the acceptable pronunciation? How are you saying this words???

Takes one to know one.

Anyways, lets stop this bickering and get back to worrying about the Gews are destroying Jermany.

Steve Wilhite, the inventor of the widely used Web illustration, declared it should bepronounced “jif,” like the brand of peanut butter, rather than with a hard G sound.

Understood.

But just because he invented the standard doesn't mean he is right. I always have, and always will pronounce it with a hard G sound, and will never be swayed, unless they change it to the Japhics Interchange Format.

just fucking jewgle it already you numb nutz!

We have. It's JIF. It's correct grammatically and correct based on the person who created it. Something like "jewgle" doesn't make any sense.

Unless you are in Massachusetts in which case you pronounce things like "Masspike" and Massachusetts Avenue becomes "Mass Ave" with both "Mass" and "Ave" pronounced.

I just want people to seriously start pronouncing UFO as "You-fo" :p

Well, I know why this guy works for PBS.

Yawn, 11 minutes to explain GIF? C'mon, get it down to 3 and I might be able to sit through this.

I'm old and have been using GIFs since the 80s. I remember reading an article late 80s/early 90s where the creator said it was pronounced JIFF and I happened to pronounce it that way too. At that point it's like a proper name you can't pronounce it however you like. It's kinda like the Lara Croft thing, most people saying Lara wrong.

I feel the opposite way. People who say GUI, SCSI, SATA, and every other computer related acronym as a word needs to be castrated.

I have always said Gee You Eye (GUI) , Ess Sea Ess Eye (SCSI) , Ess Aye Tea Aye (SATA), etc...

I was downloading gifs on 28.8 modems while most of you people were in diapers. And it was mostly porn. Prounced "jif" soft g, as in "gentleman's viewing pleasure". But call it whatever you want, the world switched to jpg 15 years ago

I used to, but I eventually caved and started pronouncing them as conversations started getting challenging with all those extra syllables.

I still feel the proper way to use an acronym in speech is to spell out each letter, but sometimes when you say the same acronym repeatedly it can get really tiring.

SQL was my last holdout, but I finally started saying "sequel."

Do you feel this way about SCUBA diving? :p

Well, there are certain words that started out as acrononyms, but have since been defined as actual words. For these it is entirely correct to pronounce them. Laser falls into this category as well.

Do you say geraffe or jeraffe when pronounce giraffe? How about Gin? Do you pronounce it as gen or jen? Exactly.

That's how I've always heard it in relation to those... I used to call it Nome as in one word, silent G. Then, I heard it several times at a Linux conference video and I changed my ways...

SQL was my last holdout, but I finally started saying "sequel."

SQL and RAID are really the only exceptions that I have. I'll say those as words. But if you're a grown ass man saying the word gooey or scuzzy (as in GUI and SCSI) then I just don't know what to say to you.
