The Minority Leader would have you know that everything in the iPhone came from federal investments and research. Voice recognition, GPS, and flat screens were also all government ideas.

"The late Steve Jobs and the team at Apple that made the iPhone would be the first to tell you that they didn't invent many of its core technologies we now take for granted," he said. "Leader Pelosi counted Steve Jobs as friend and meant no disrespect to his legacy, but the point she was making is a valid one. Leader Pelosi believes that Steve Jobs and his colleagues at Apple, deserve enormous credit for taking federally-backed innovations off the shelf, refining them, commercializing them and turning them into a beautiful device that changed the world."

Guess who just guaranteed themselves a seat on the Apple Board of Directors when she leaves Congress? :D

Sorry, I can't sound Pelosi. I guess you can give credit that some of the stuff was funded by federal dollars - but companies refined them, and commercialized them. Voice recognition in use today was not developed by the government. Ask Amazon, Google, Apple, and the many other companies that have been refining/researching it for decades. Same with flat screen - Samsung, LG, Viewsonice, Philips, ... - really? GPS satellites are funded by the fed - to my knowledge, there are no commercial satellites that provide GPS information.
I recall Obama telling people they didn't make the business by themselves. The government helped them. Such bullshit.

I think she meant this. Maybe not Apple for being so hard assed about unlocking phones for the fed, but.. That's probably why they are so pissed!

I don't understand the point of this article.

Govt is great. W/O govt, businesses would fail and we would all die. Thank the govt for your life.. The Govt is god. End all be all. Just look at Venezuela. lol :D

Obama pretty much echoed the same thing a while ago. Surprise. Surprise.

Freedom from govt is pretty much how the US was born. Now, we're reverting back to consuming the vomit we expelled. Children never seem to learn.

Always remember: on the axis between authoritarianism vs. liberty, the United States remains the most fanatical libertarian state in the world. We are liberty extremists. We never shut up about our rights and our founding documents; we talk about them more than just about any other nation talks about theirs. Are we purely libertarian? Of course not. There are no purely libertarian states in the world despite the attempts of some to conflate anarchic states with libertarianism/classical liberalism. The point being: nobody's going to bitch as much about freedom than us. And that's why we have as much as we do. That shit takes fierce, constant vigilance to maintain, because most people will always find a reason to restrict a little more.

If the phone was made by the govt it would break all the time, and would take years for updates to come out. Oh and would run slow as hell.

She needs to cut down on the botox injections....they are injecting it into her brain.....I bet she believes government funding also developed the kite Benjamin franklin had.

US government isn't really allowed to commercialize it, their business lobbies would be in such a fit in the US government actually competed. Which is why we have shit like USPS which isn't allowed to compete then people complain that it's no longer making the kind of money it used to, well it's not allowed to do many things, limited charter. Quite a few technologies are credited to US funding, science for science sake is it's strong point. Companies would not spend nearly as much money as the government does on science without commercialization already in mind. It's that research that has lead to quite a large contribution to society and business considering we give away many things free of charge.

Can I turn around and say that the government couldn't have invented any of that shit if it wasn't for John Q Taxpayer being able to pony up for the research in the first place, so yeah fuck that bitch, I invented GPS by all accounts!!! Even if predates my birth!

How ironic the government is all 'we the people' when citizens are bragging but as soon as it is something someone doesn't like then it's 'that evil government'. As soon as some people decide to form a group, they get all high and mighty and try to tell others what to do. Man cannot rule man. I wont listen to your shit. I won't follow your shit. I follow the laws of physics. Al other laws can blow me.

Why is the iPhone considered so good that people rush to associate themselves with it? If the government created the iPhone, then maybe that alone could be a reason to lessen the future "research" and "investments" that could lead to more such products in the future. A world without the iPhone would be nicer to live in, and now thanks to this article, I can blame the government.

GPS specifically, she would probably credit the democratic party (Bill Clinton).

With Pelosi, there's a target-rich environment of stupid from which to choose.

I always wondered how braindead people in her district are to keep electing her and if that is really the case, god help us all for the republic might survive her, but it definetly can't survive dump voters

She kind of sort of partially has a very long distance point, in that many tech innovations were innitially funded by the government, but to call a current cell phone as created by the government is just too much a stretch. Making a product (and refining that product) is not the same as creating something.

I agree with you, I think there is actually a really good point to having a unified endeavor for many cutting edge things. Instead of multiple companies wasting their time not only creating the same thing, but also the legal battles they go through to secure those products and designs. If the "government" owned the rights to these things, then anyone could produce them.

I only have 2nd hand experience with the aerospace industry, but I know at this point that companies damn near put the livelihood of the company on the line for a bid knowing that only 1 company will actually get the bid.

Look at how many jet fighters are in active duty right now in America, it's like 4. F15, F16, F22, F35. Of those, only the F15 isn't made by Lockhead. The F15 is made by Boeing. And those are really the only two companies left. Northrop Grumman is there, but barely, and more of a support role.

(please correct me if the followin is wrong)
And what's worse, is that when these companies create products for the bids, the loosing companies cannot further create those designs because the government owns the rights to it. When the F-22 was developed, Boeing had a competing design, the YF-23. Lockheed won the bid and the YF-23 was never seen from again. What's the point of being in these bids if it will bankrupt the company?

Things like Space Exploration, Propulsion, Power, should definitely be spearheaded by the government. These are big game changers that will affect everyone.

Don't forget - Al Gore invented pants! He claims to have also invented the Internet.

What is incredibly frustrating to me is the utter acceptance that the "Government" somehow is superior to "my" interests....

Think about it for just a moment...

Q. Where did the "Government "get the $$$ to fund the basic stuff?

This is click bait.

What she actually said makes sense, but the portion of it that was used in the headline makes her sound like a crazy imbecile.

Most of those things are from private companies or organizations and the government only cut a check with money taken from employees in those and other private companies.

I thought you were joking for sure, but after a couple of minutes on google it looks like that just might be a direct quote.... To quote the Comedian, "god help us all."

The Patriot Act is a perfect example of a bill which passed without anyone reading it. The bill was not posted publicly prior to it's vote, and it was only posted for review on the Congressional intranet just 15 minutes before it's vote. There was no debate in the House.

315 pages of legislation which amends 1000's of pages of criminal statutes., so even if you could read the 315 pages in 15 minutes you would still need to review the original statutes to understand the alterations.

I'll never forget "we have to pass the bill so you can find out what's in it".

Elitist mindset summed up with such eloquence; breathtaking.

Really of all the messed up shit in my life i've heard out of the government, that is the one that seems to stick in my head and piss me off the most. When she dies i hope to go to where her grave is and piss on it.

Pretty much ALL the stuff in a modern phone/PC uses tech developed on Federal dollars. All business does is commercialize Federal research into products.

Voice recognition in use today was not developed by the government. Ask Amazon, Google, Apple, and the many other companies that have been refining/researching it for decades.

The underlying technology was researched by DARPA back in the 80's. Companies have been refining that underlying tech for 30 years, but the first steps were performed using Federal dollars.

Same with flat screen - Samsung, LG, Viewsonice, Philips, ... - really?

LCD's were a 70's DARPA invention. Samsung and Co simply figured out how to mass produce them at a low enough cost to make a profit.

GPS satellites are funded by the fed - to my knowledge, there are no commercial satellites that provide GPS information.

GPS was first and foremost a military tech. It wasn't until Clinton allowed public use of the more accurate location detection that GPS became accurate enough to be viable in the way we use it today.

I recall Obama telling people they didn't make the business by themselves. The government helped them. Such bullshit.

He's correct. Pretty much every modern technology we use today was funded with your tax dollars. Universities are basically publicly funded R&D labs, and DARPA primarily researches tech 30 years or so ahead of it's viability.

A lot of the technology that goes into making the Iphone, are in fact, technologies that government funded, e.g., university and NASA. Its also true Steve Job and Apple took all the past research and refined those technology and then commercialize them. The important point is without government funding research such as these, no business is stupid enough to fund the research (the return on investment is non-existent).
